The Phillips buliding was this warren of rooms . Some of the rooms had no doors and rarely did they have cellings. There was a real freeform of space. whcihc meant artists of all types could work . It became a sort of acciedental collective. Artists often split into factions more quickly then other groups . Having a place where artists worked side by side in the oldest traditons (figurtive painting) to the newest ( video and netart) was important, freeing and powerful. Then the devolper realized it made no money. The niegborhood slowy lost its rooming houses and ethnic grocery stores. The phillips building was one of the last spaces left. MOTHERFUCKERS DECIDED THEY NEEDED MORE LOFTS ! The cool mural didnt fit with the devolders plans
