do you think they'll tear it down?

phil-two (phil-two), Saturday, 6 September 2003 08:03 (twenty-one years ago)

yah i do

chaki (chaki), Saturday, 6 September 2003 08:06 (twenty-one years ago)

My aunt used to be one of the attendents on 'Big Thunder Mountain' in the mid- to late-80's. She always said that she thought it was a bad idea of tempt fate by having a 'runaway' ride.

The same ride here at DisneyWorld has been closed for routine maintenance (so the workers for the rat say), and now there saying that they'll not re-open it until the reason for the accident in Anaheim is determined and safety measures can be taken.

I feel pretty horrid for the people who were in the accident and who had to witness it.

[x-post] Really? I hadn't even thought about that possibility, but it would be odd to keep it running, I guess. Or maybe they could change the route or something. I know a kid lost his foot in the ride in the past year or two, while loading or unloading. I wonder if they close the Anaheim ride if they'll A) close the Orlando ride too and B) if they do close both rides, would they be willing to bring back 'Mr. Toad's Wild Ride'in their place?

i hope they bring it back!

phil-two (phil-two), Saturday, 6 September 2003 08:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Darn tootin'!

I'm Passing Open Windows (Ms Laura), Saturday, 6 September 2003 08:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Mr. Toad's demented splendor is gone forever, I'm afraid. I can't conceive of a scenario that would bring it back. Ultimately the problem is that every kid would ask who the fuck Mr. Toad is. Nobody reads The Wind in the Willows nowadays. Hell nobody read it twenty years ago.

Benjamin (benjamin), Saturday, 6 September 2003 13:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Big Thunder Mountain was the only ride my dad was willing to go on with me when I was 11. :(

Ally (mlescaut), Saturday, 6 September 2003 13:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Gives a new meaning to the phase "risky fun":< This story was scary, since I can remember going on rickety rides like the Cyclone at Coney Island, and not thinking twice about if I could fall out. However, I'd always thought there would be greater risk of death from something like a heart-attack (as some of those rides can go pretty fast).

This was horrible for the deceased person's family, for sure. If Disneyland's rep gets tarnished any more, who'll want to go? The domino effect means that Mickey might get hit with a pink slip.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Saturday, 6 September 2003 14:45 (twenty-one years ago)

well, to all respect to those who have lost a loved one this time or had a youngster injured, was there evidence that the guy (or people) in question was following ride rules? Many times, these accidents happen because the people involved were doing risky, stupid shit on the ride. Not saying innocent people don't ever get injured on Disneyland rides, but I've never heard of anyone dying at Disneyland (or Dineyworld for that matter) who was completely following the rules. Rides at either are usually very tame in comparison to other amusement parks.

How many people have died at Six Flags parks, for instance?

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 6 September 2003 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

(then again, having been to Disneyland many many times a kid, I never ever underestimate the degrees of stupidity to which some visitors will pursue at the park.)

s1utsky (slutsky), Saturday, 6 September 2003 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

True, but til a full investigation is done (prolly for the coming lawsuit), we won't know exactly what caused it to derail.

"wind in the willows" was my favorite book as a child. i loved the mr. toad ride. i did not know they had shut it down. this makes me very sad. is the "latin quartet" still there? the new orleans section?

amateurist (amateurist), Saturday, 6 September 2003 18:15 (twenty-one years ago)

A couple of years ago I read an article about how amusement park rides (all of them, not just Disney's) are not adequately supervised by any sort of regulatory agency. I wish I could remember where I saw the article -- it was rather alarming. The jist of it was that amusement parks are more or less expected to police themselves, and while you would think they have a very strong economic (if not moral) obligation to do so and make sure everything's safe ... well, I can also see how amusement parks could get lax, lazy, or self-deluded in tems of not spending lots of money to fix or replace a ride that doesn't seem too dangerous. Has anyone else seen the article I'm talking about or read anything else to this effect -- that there are really no federally mandated safety standards for these rides?

jewelly (jewelly), Saturday, 6 September 2003 18:23 (twenty-one years ago)

when i went to eurodisney thunder mountain was the only ride i went on-i was too scared of the other ones...

what media companies are associated with/owned by disney by the way?
curious because my friend heard about this on fox news yesterday evening, but there was no mention of it on the news on any other channels last night

the zine murder can be fun had a long piece on all the disneyland deaths not too long ago; I didn't read it but heard the writer read it on NPR a few weeks ago. The history of Disney covering things up and the litigation that went along with the deaths was pretty interesting. Unfortunately I can't remember what any of it was!

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Saturday, 6 September 2003 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmmm ... CNN just said something about Tokyo Disney shutting down their 'Thunder Mountain' ... or maybe removing it. Sheesh. I need to actually pay attention to what those anchors are saying, I guess.

I'm Passing Open Windows (Ms Laura), Saturday, 6 September 2003 20:57 (twenty-one years ago)

can't they just fix the ride so that an accident doesn't happen again? instead of shutting them all down?

when i was a little kid, i thought disney rides were so weak. the rides at great adventure or at the jersey shore were where it was at!

Tad (llamasfur), Saturday, 6 September 2003 21:10 (twenty-one years ago)

who the hell is gonna ride it again knowing that in that tunnel, some poor kid got sliced in half, or whatever.

phil-two (phil-two), Saturday, 6 September 2003 21:14 (twenty-one years ago)

in which case, thunder mtn. will become a peer pressure ride ("what? think you're gonna be SLICED IN HALF? fucking wuss"), and therefore the most successful ride of the entire park.

or not.

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 6 September 2003 21:19 (twenty-one years ago)

besides, i thought the more risque rides at Disneyland were getting less attendance than the more sultry rides anyway, because of the swarms of orange county emo kids who descend upon the place regularly to go out on dates.

(seriously, i was expecting sunny day real estate to pop out of the cosmic kiosk in the Tomorrowland food court last time i was there)

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 6 September 2003 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

theres a great article in the la weekly this week about disneyland dorks.

chaki (chaki), Saturday, 6 September 2003 21:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I read that! fascinating!

s1utsky (slutsky), Saturday, 6 September 2003 21:41 (twenty-one years ago)

ps i had an annual pass for many years and used to go bymyself to do homework. me = former disneyland dork.

chaki (chaki), Saturday, 6 September 2003 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe this will put a stop to the million-dollar Disney idea to make major motion pictures based on RIDES (you know, Pirates of the Carribean, The Country Bears, that upcoming haunted house movie...), as opposed to making rides based on movies (Back to the Future - the movie. Picnic at Hanging Rock - the movie). I had once suggested to a friend that they should make a new Disneyland ride based on the Pirates... movie. THEN, they could make another new ride based on that movie. And then another movie based on that ride. And so on. The whole friggin' thing reminds me of that scene in The Player where that hotshot producer guy comes up with instant movie ideas by reading the newspaper ("Get Jimmy Smits and make it a sexy Stand and Deliver).

I wouldn't be surprised if the next Disney movie will be based on the tram ride from the parking lot.

Ernest P. (ernestp), Sunday, 7 September 2003 02:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Ernest, that doesn't exist anymore! Now you're herded into some horrible concrete multi-level parking structure where you're forced to be trammed into a path advertising the Disney mall and the California adventure park.

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 7 September 2003 03:11 (twenty-one years ago)

huh?! mr. toad's ride is still there! it's still on the d-land website. it's not the orginal original, having been redone with the fantasyland overhaul in the early 80's, but it's there nonetheless. it's the absence of the peoplemover and the molecule and the rockets and overall cool uber-mod tomorrowland decor that breaks my heart.

there was an latimes article about old disneyland rides years ago saying how arbitrary the decisions were on what stays and goes. the tiki room, the most retarded show/ride at the park, is still there cuz some big disney boardmember won't let it go.

this guy i knew had the architectural plans to the haunted mansion on his wall. if you grew up in socal it was like looking at god's drafting board.

lolita corpus (lolitacorpus), Sunday, 7 September 2003 03:36 (twenty-one years ago)

i still want to crash that top-secret club in the new orleans section.

It wasn't a Disney property, but since this thread was bumped already:

http://www.star-telegram.com/2013/07/20/5015425/investigation-into-womans-fatal.html

Witnesses said Esparza “basically tumbled over,” perhaps when the ride made a sudden turn, and disappeared into the evening.

John and Darlene Putman of Rockwall said they were in line Friday when the Giant returned from its fatal run. They saw an agitated man and woman in their 20s climb out of a car.

“They were screaming, ‘My mom! My mom! Let us out, we need to go get her!’ ” John Putman said.

Ride operators spoke with the couple, and one made a call. They put on helmets and headed for an area under the coaster, the Putmans said.

One of the riders, Carment Brown of Arlington, said she watched Esparza ask one of the Six Flag ride attendants to make sure she was corrected fastened because her lap bar did not click more than once. “Everybody else is like, ‘Click, click, click,” she told the Dallas Morning News. “Hers only clicked once. Hers was the only one that went down once, and she didn’t feel safe, but they let her still get on the ride. That could have been me.”

And the part where you can tell this happened in Texas:

Neither the Arlington police nor fire department are participating in the on-going probe, which for the time being is being solely undertaken by the amusement park’s owner.

Mayor Robert Cluck said he had no information on the investigation...

Oh god that kind of thing gives me nightmares. I was on a ride once as a teenager that a similar thing happened on - one of those circle loop rids where the carriages swing up one side, and back, and eventually loop right over a few times. I was too small for the padded bar and I honestly had to *hang on for dear life* screaming my head off, I thought I was going to fucking die. It was the worst thing ever.

Like they make it sound like she just fell out, disappeared, no one could find her and no one much bothred to look, just the park operator with a torch in the dark.

I looked up Superman roller coaster accidents, and yikes there were quite a few.

Most recent one involved a decorated war vet who was ejected from his seat and perished in a fall.
