should UN troops go to Iraq to help the US-UK forces there?

Unless the UN is allowed to set policy, the UN should not send troops. Doing otherwise demeans the UN, making it a compliant tool of the USA's foreign policy - just exactly what they must avoid. There is enough suspicion of the UN in the third world already without that.

If the UN bails the USA and UK out of the consequences for their egregious arrogance without exacting an obvious and painful price for the service, then it may as well wear a "Kick Me" sign and a dog collar. Of course, the propaganda machines in the USA and UK will say the exact opposite of this.

UN should be in charge, USUK should pay for it.

UN troops do not exist, ergo this question is moot.

As it should have been since the whole thing began, if'n it were the kinda thing that needed to go down at all (which it sooooo friggin wasn't, but what's happened has happened).

I seriously laughed out loud for minutes straight when I came in to work the other day and saw on the office-kitchen table a newspaper with the headline "Bush seeks UN aid in Iraq". Fucking ridiculous.

troops of UN countries often serve in peacekeeping roles under the UN flag - eg the UNIFIL force in Lebanon, and various other bits and bobs around the globe.

my own feeling is that Bushco have really fucked this one up, and it would be a bad idea if other countries sent their soldiers to be killed fighting a US-UK war.

Yeah you gotta feel bad for the grunts but quite frankly fuck 'em, they followed their asshole leaders in. If the US troopse feel so agrieved and voerworked they should follow the French example and have a mutiny I say.
