Terms - often but not always nicknames - used by fans which require some kind of prior knowledge, even if very slight. Eg football team nicknames, calling the Replacements "the 'Mats" etc.

Why does it exist? How does it come about? Other examples? Classic or dud?

It's inner-outer circle behavior. If you understand (or not), it places you in the appropriate circle. Of course shortening is *laziness*. Maybe it's the same in Japanese: to make it your own? Like appartment => Japanese changed it to apatoo.
