Dying hair black

Who does this act suit? Is the consequence beauty or foolishness?

1 1 2 3 5, Wednesday, 26 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It only suits very pale people; people with dark brown hair and dark skin tend to look silly with pure black hair because it makes their hair look duller. The consequence of doing it right is a vampirish look.

Maria, Wednesday, 26 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yes, black hair should be as shiny as is humanly possible.

rainy, Wednesday, 26 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

dyed black hair = GRATE, total CLASSIC. but only on cute, scruffy, "arty" girls (who seem to be the only ones who do it outside goth kiddies, but i digress...)

jess, Wednesday, 26 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

classic: when its me or more friends.

dud: when its those spend-thousands-on-an-outfit-to-be-fashionable-and-look-like-a -witch-plume-hag types.

di, Thursday, 27 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I dye my hair a slightly darker brown than what's naturally there. In fact, I've got a box of the colour they call 'Brasilia' right here, it's a great coffee-type shade. And yes, I have very pale skin and very blue eyes (there are no little brown bits in them).

suzy, Thursday, 27 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's actually good for your hair compared to lightening it, which is bad. I do mine black. I'm very pale but not a goth.

Samantha, Thursday, 27 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Me = vvvv pale. Dyed hair black, didn't think it suited me as well as a redder shade. It just dulled me down. Although I had to find out what it did, I guess. If you have vaguely frizzy hair, don't do it.

Sarah, Thursday, 27 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i dyed mine black once. it was after a really BAD day at the investment bank i worked in at the time. it was very shocking as i am qute pale, and it was excellent. however, i did have exactly the same hairstyle as Kristin Hersh at the time which made me look like a bit of a tragic groupie. i have since grown it out and it is now red (as it was before) and shall continue to grow redder...

i think black hair looks grate on everyone EXCEPT goths. it's wasted on them.

katie, Thursday, 27 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What do you use? Saliva and ash mixture?

Mike Hanle y, Thursday, 27 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My sister had dyed black hair for a long time, and her colorist told her that she couldn't keep doing it, because the black dye adds weight to your hair in a way that bleaching doesn't, and the weight of the dye causes the hair to break. I've been covering up gray with dark dye, though, and I haven't noticed any breakage.

I have very dark brown hair which picks up some red in the summer. I tried to get the red out once by just dyeing it blue-black: big mistake. It looks like shit on curly hair. So I panicked and cut it all off two days later - to within 1/2 an inch of my scalp.

I don't know what to do with my hair, because I need a change but no one I've tried knows how to do curly hair.

Kerry, Thursday, 27 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dont know what to do with your hair?!?!?!?!?Dont you read my threads Kerrry!

Pennysong Hanle y, Friday, 28 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The worst part of dying hair darker is the STAINS you get on scalp/ skin. These take two days to shift and yes, if you mix soap and cigarette ash and apply it to the affected hairline area that helps to shift the stains considerably.

suzy, Friday, 28 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't know what to do with my hair either. I dyed it red and now it's an auburn color with dark roots that are growing out. I want to dye it either red again or dark brown so the dyeing cycle stops. (And I would look very, very bad with black hair!)

Lyra, Friday, 28 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i died my hair black, i have very pale skin. and i was told today that i looked "washed out" ahhhhh' this is horrible, how do i die over it?

Lori L, Monday, 28 July 2003 18:56 (twenty-two years ago)

you have to compensate by changing your makeup and the colors you wear if you want to keep the black. if you can't find the right combo, just wait a couple of days and recolor to where you want it.

I don't do black, but I do a violet/almost-black; that's when the hair isn't some shade of red. Every time I change it from dark to red, I have to change the makeup colors and the clothes, or it doesn't work. I sound like Martha fuckin' Stewart. Oh well, hope it helps.

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 28 July 2003 19:02 (twenty-two years ago)

for women with the complimentary complexion it's almost always a plus in my book.

dud on guys, sorry, it's just fall out from the whole post-HC/goth/screamo fallout that accompanied living in SD ca. 90-93.

one month passes...
Dyed black hair looks good on most people with naturally tanned skin and it also suits black or asian people as long as their is in good condition otherwise it can look very dull and unnatural, but it can make shiny hair look more lusterous and rich in colour.

I really want to dye my hair black. It was originally a dark brown, and now it's a dark blonde/light brown. Do you think I should dye it black?

yes yes!

think it looks okay.

Yeah, why not!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 12:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I died my hair black and indeed it left horrible stains all around (my scalp and face and neck). I found that sitting in a sauna or steam room for an hour punctuated with showers ever 10 minuts or so sweated almost all the stain out. But my pillow was blue for days.

Skottie, Wednesday, 22 October 2003 05:42 (twenty-two years ago)

You can prevent horrible black stains on ears and face and neck by covering those areas with a thin layer of vaseline before you apply the dye. (Wiping off any splashes of dye immediately helps)

OK, then you have the challenge of getting slimey vaseline off you afterwards, but that's easier to remove than blackblobs.

kate (kate), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 07:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Mine is now dyed black, more out of irritation at the significantly more-bleached ends (roots - browny/black, ends - ORANGE) when starting new job. I think it looks great!

I have realised that since starting this job I have only worn black clothing too. What is that whisper I hear... "office goth"...? CHIZ. I shall rectify this in Topshop/H&M/whatever.

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 08:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I have been tempted by this, to go for some kind of Dita Von Tease look, but I would have to do my eyebrows too and this gives me fear. I am also absurdly pale, so I reckon I'd probably look more Mistaken Teenage Goth than Queen Of The Nu-Burlesque.

I think I will settle for a darker, yet brighter red.

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 12:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I found wipes for sale at Sally's Beauty Supply that clean off excess dye that gets onto your skin. They worked quite well. That said, I still needed to shave the peach fuzz on my neck and forehead because I accidentally dyed it. Again.

Using a shitty pillowcase and towel until you shampoo your hair a couple of times is probably a good idea.

People with very light (especially red) eyebrows should never, never, ever dye their hair black.

Sarah Pedal (call mr. lee), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 13:04 (twenty-two years ago)

That's me and my ginger eyebrows out then.

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 13:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I have eyebrows that are light to nonexistent, and they only go halfway across my brow region. But that didn't stop me dying my hair black!

Though I did look absolutely horrible - but I think that's more due to my peach skin tone than my eyebrowlessness.

kate (kate), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 13:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I just pay £20 to get mine done by People Who Know What They're Doing.

It starts to look very unpleasant as it grows out because you sort of get a patchy mix of your old hair with bits of darker colour in it.

(I re-dye mine neurotically as soon as this starts to appear and will thus probably have black hair until I go bald or die. There is no escape.)

Ferg (Ferg), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

there's a really nice black that i think is feria that i was using last summer-- it's really dark purple in the light, and doesn't look as startling as blue-black dye does. some pseudo-egyptian name, i think.

that would be my tip for someone thinking about trying it. it's cool and a little bit different, but not shockingly black the way some are.

I am Asian and I think I look terrible with natural black hair!

If you want to go black, go for a very dark brown, cause there's almost no difference and w/ brown you can always let it fade.

nobody looks terrible with natural black hair!!

Hi All
I am contemplating changing my hair colour from a light blonde to Black. It will be a huge change and I have fair skin but have dark eyebrows and lashes to the point where I only have to use clear on them. So has anyone else gone from a light blonde to black in one hit and what was the end result? I am still tossing with the idea.

Michelle, Thursday, 11 August 2005 02:49 (twenty years ago)

Don't go black, Use "darkest brown". It will look black but not as harsh against your skin.

how to remove black hair after coloring it, i decided i didnt like it, no money to buy a hair coloring to fix it so whats the best way to get it out with out dying it asain

tanya brown, Sunday, 14 August 2005 00:01 (twenty years ago)

It is a good idea if you have black hair and your hair will not become damaged or fall out because you are dying it. I wonder if the blue black shampoos from aveda work.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Sunday, 14 August 2005 04:47 (twenty years ago)

It's better to go a very dark brown. It's much more forgiving

seuss, Sunday, 14 August 2005 08:50 (twenty years ago)

Healthy people everywhere should shave all their hair off and donate it to the unfortunate. If your hair isn't long enough for such a daring task, just shave it anyway. I'm sure given a certain amount of time, being bald will become quite the fasionable trend. SO come on! Just do it! Go! Now! Don't be afraid, it will grow back. They do say time heals all wounds.

i have highlighted my ahir a little while ago but now im want to dye it black....beauce of my highlights will it go a funny colour?

kay, Saturday, 20 August 2005 20:19 (twenty years ago)

i'm totally amazed at most people's opinions on dying hair black depending on skin colour, actually if u have dark skin, 9 times out of ten dark hair will most definately suit u. think-native americans, kiwi's etc. i have dyed my hair black several times. no colour gives shine like black.. my only advice is dont do it if u wont be like that for long.. or if u do, use a semi permanant. otherwise u will get a lovely ring of black before ur regrowth and will have to bleach out the black.

louise ann, Sunday, 21 August 2005 16:43 (twenty years ago)

kay,

that depends on your highlight colours-if they are blonde they may turn a greeny colour. to conteract blonde u need red,(u may have to build it up) then u can apply the black, ask a ;oca; hairdresser for more info.

I was contemplating on whether i should dye my hair black or not, everybody said it'd look good cuz i'm naturally tanned n stuff, but after dyin' it black i'll hafta bleach it out n then TRY n find my natural color again (light brown), i say its too much damage to the hair, it aint worth it, besides, au naturel is the sexiest way to go aint it?;) later dayz

I was born with black hair then it lightened a little to dark brown as I got a little older... Then my mom would always dye her hair blonde and I wanted to be a blonde so bad and I would beg her to dye my hair as well... big mistake... I would play outside all the time constantly from 7am to 10pm and I would mostly swim... Well the sun bleached my hair really badly -_- and it turned this light brown color from it and now it grows in that color... I have dark eyes and my eyebrows are dark too... I dye my hair black a lot but I pull it back even when the roots come in if your not smack up against my face it looks black even with the roots... I have a pale complexion to with slited eyes a little... and people say I look good with black hair because it matches me so I keep dying it black... I was called gothic a couple times but I don't wear any dark colors I wear like pink and light blue and purple... I don't tan that well in the summer either for some reason even though i'm 30% Native American and 10% Chinese... it's annoying I'm weird... lol but heres all I got to say if it looks good on you then hey go for it but if your trying to keep it a secret if you have blue or green light eyes it ain't gonna happen because it's obvious... I have freckles as well thats weird too I don't have a speck of Irish in me either or celtic backrounds hum... well thats all I got to say I think black hair is kewl and it's stupid that people are sterotyped as gothic because they dye there hair black???

Mari, Thursday, 25 August 2005 04:16 (twenty years ago)

Never dye your hair black unless you are sure that you want it that way for a long time. bleaching black hair doesn't work AT ALL! And dying your hair black is really bad for it. I suggest - dark, dark, dark brown.

Kimberly., Saturday, 27 August 2005 19:06 (twenty years ago)

I've dyed my hair black for about three years now, and I've never noticed anything bad with it. The Natural Instincts hair dye actually even made my hair shine more. Although the black NEVER comes out of my hair, even with semi-perminate dyes. So a word to the wise: Unless you're sure it'll look good, don't dye it black. Try for a lighter colour.

Kellie, Monday, 29 August 2005 19:41 (twenty years ago)

Yes semi perminate didn't come out of mines either but the blonde permemant die killed my hair from dark brown to bleaching my color lighter brown which I hate o.o... You should match eye and skin tones together before coloring I didn't look good with that light brown color so I made it darker... I tried dying my hair dark brown but again it came out black o.o

Mari, Thursday, 1 September 2005 20:57 (twenty years ago)

Black kills hair. Once you go black, you can't really go back. Or at least---you can't really go platinum.

jxnx (jxnx), Friday, 2 September 2005 16:28 (twenty years ago)

i bleached my hair, then decided it didnt suit me so i dyed it red then dark dark brown, but it looks black and i was quite shocked, i hated it at first and even though ive started getting used to it i still dont think its me, i see so many women with black hair and think it looks great and cant understand why it dosent look right on me, i have darkish skin and green eyes and my friend says she likes it but i want it gone and i want my own medium/dark brown hair back. please could someone tell me how to do it ive put a lighter shade of brown on it and it never worked, how can i loose the black and get the brown back????????

nicci rivers, Friday, 2 September 2005 20:57 (twenty years ago)

I really want to dye my hair black (and then put red streaks in my side bands) Just because I am extremely bored and I want a change. Many people have done it, so I don't feel I have to worry. But I am. I'm worrying that my hair will fall out and everything. I have pale skin, but my natural hair colour is brown..and my eyebrows are a light brown too. I think it will look gay when I dye it black, but my mom will take me to a professional to get it dyed anyways. I've heard of people dying their eyebrows too. Isn't that or would it be bad to do so? Or wouldn't it look a little awkward and fade at all? I'm soo confused on what to do. Some one talk to me about this so I can decide on what to do.

Melissa gahh, Sunday, 4 September 2005 04:43 (twenty years ago)

Obviously it would be a bad idea to dye your hair black and then dye the side bit with red steaks. I don't suggest dying your eyebrows but rather darken them up a little with an eyebrow pencil. I have no idea why you think your hair will fall out. I have dyed my hair a great many colours and it's all still there.

I recently dyed my hair dark brown, but it came out jet black. I love it! I admit, it did stain the hairs around my face slightly, but that soon faded, and now that just makes my hair look more natural. I make my eyebrows match using black eyebrow pencil, and i assure you that dying your hair black does not ruin your hair. I do however have very pale skin, which does help.

Ez, Friday, 9 September 2005 13:26 (twenty years ago)

I really want to dye my medium brown/reddish hair black. I just picked up a box of Revolon colorsilk in their basic shade of black. My hair has been previously dyed many times. I grew out my highlights. I'm really pale and have blue eyes. i used 2 use loreal preference/garnier but they didn't ahve the shade I was looking for. Anyone know if colorsilk is a good brand and true to color? Also, I have bangs. Will it look to harsh?

Terner P, Wednesday, 14 September 2005 17:20 (twenty years ago)

I don't like Colorsilk's black, mostly cause I just find it doesn't cover up the reddish glow of my washed-out previous dye job.

I do think the black hair looks awesome with bangs...but sometimes it seems really harsh. I am either constantly pinning back my bangs or just hoping I look like Rose McGowan in "The Doom Generation."

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 16 September 2005 05:56 (twenty years ago)

I just dyed my hair black two days ago....no problems with staining or anything like that. I am very pale and have blue eyes my natural color is light brown..but i think black hair is hot and looks hoton me. As far as eyebrow dying i did it once the last time i dyed my hair black..i didnt like it at all.. ick made my eyebrows stick out too much i usually just make my brows black with liner or mascara works great and wont come out untill you wash your face. I use nice and easy hair dye it makes your hair really shiney and smooth and it lasts and covers all the red...unless you happen to miss a spot lol. And to the person redying there whole head cause your roots are brown why dont u just buy root touch up next time. If you are thinking of dying your hair black go ahead but remember the results are very dramatic if you have lighter hair and black dye will not fade...so if your unsure try a temporary color first. :)

I used Clairol to dye my hair black and it turned out amazing. My hair is shiny and smooth, and it somehow got rid of the frizz. Glorious stuff and I highly recommend it.

well its common sense to dye ur hair black because u will just be more camoflaged in the dark.. meheheeheh. i did it and i look so fat but its all good cuz if i dress dark i look invisible wich really improves my self asteem cuz i just look like i have head and no fat under my neck

I LOVE BLACK! it makes me suicidal....!
