Anyone know any pubs in London showing Scotland games?

My colleague from Scotland is down tomorrow and he wants to watch Germany v Scotland; we usually go out all together after our monthly meetings and we've all agreed here in London that England v Liechtenstein is a pup of a game and we're not interested. We would however like to watch Scotland v Germany as it looks like a good game (well, something to play for anyway and the result up for grabs).

However, where to watch it? Where will be showing that game instead of the England game? But by the same rule, not full of lots of Scots banging on about England bastards etc and Culloden.

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Ach, they're on at the same time are they? I often wonder if it is possible to watch England in Scotland in these circumstances. Anyone ever heard of an English pub in Scotland? Actually some awful place like Walkabout probably shows different games on their different screens. Maybe that would work in London too?

Try one from here: http://www.ionabars.com/

But by the same rule, not full of lots of Scots banging on about England bastards etc and Culloden.

I din't notice this bit, mind you.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

There was one on Gt. Western Road advertising a showing of the England game the other day but with no mention of the Scotland game (played on the same day.) It was just up (or down) from I.J. Mellis.

David. (Cozen), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks David - I don't know what I.J. Mellis is - can you give me another reference point?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 20:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Erm - in the Bar Oz region.

David. (Cozen), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

ok

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Surely not Hubbard's?!

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha, that could be it. Is that really really bad?

David. (Cozen), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it is quite bad but Ally and RJG like it. I'm surprised they're not showing the Scottish game. I can't remember if they have two screens.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 21:32 (twenty-two years ago)

This is not a bad pub, really. It has got worse, probably. Anyway, pubs would be more likely to show the England game in that instance since it was on terrestrial tv and the Scotland game was not.

Wednesday night in Glasgow: I can't see how England would get a look-in.

Ally C (Ally C), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

You fancy Liechtenstein?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 22:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Always.

Ally C (Ally C), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 22:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Of the places listed on the site Eyeball Kicks links to I've only been to one: the London Scotia Bar. http://www.fancyapint.com/thepubs/pub1364.htm

I went there before it was called the London Scotia Bar, when it was still an ordinary-ish Bermondsey pub with too much stripped wood panelling. It was called the Royal Oak or the Farmers Arms or some similar unremarkable pub name. I seem to recall I saw Leicester beat Tranmere in the Worthington there. It wasn't a bad place to watch a game although the ceilings are a bit low so if it was crowded it might be a bit nasty.

Mind this was before it was tiurned into an authentic Scottish bar so it's probably different now.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 08:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe i should have my FAP there instead, so i don't feel homesick.

leigh (leigh), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 09:10 (twenty-two years ago)

the shaftesbury near my house was advertising both games, but they have myriad screens...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 09:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Myriad screens? Blimey - you Londoners with your fancy technology.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 09:22 (twenty-two years ago)

do i not mean myriad? what do i mean? is it just "many"?

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 09:29 (twenty-two years ago)

To reverse the question - how about Scottish pubs (or Scottish terrestrial telly in general) showing Turkey-England in October when I'm visiting Glasgow? I had a bit of a mare trying to watch the 2002 Arsenal-Chelsea Cup final in Edinburgh.

(To Glaswegian chums: this isn't a deal-breaker or anything, but I'd like to see that game).

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 09:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Myriad is fine. I just thought 'myriad screens' had a nice patent pending ring to it.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 09:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, The Shafyesbury has often got a couple of games on the go. When Scotland drew with the Faeroes they put it on the big screen for sweaty baiting.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 09:39 (twenty-two years ago)

On what channel will it be possible to see the Scotland game? It's on BBC 1 Scotland, but I understand that when football's on it isn't shown on digital (even in Scotland). Is that right? I've always assumed you could only see the games on Sky down here.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

If you have digital, can't you get BBC1 Scotland rather than the English version? My dad is watching it in Spain via this method in his local pub, so I assume there is some way round it...

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Hubbards, yeah.

David. (Cozen), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

The Scotland game is certainly on on the digital BBC1 Scotland up here. Possibly they suspend broadcasts of digital BBC1 Scotland down south for licensing reasons. I don't know.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay, I now know that SPL and Scottish Cup games are not shown on digital satellite, for licensing reasons, but they are still shown on cable. And, it seems, international games are shown on both.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 21:07 (twenty-two years ago)

And on freeview.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 21:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, I guess you were talking about down south.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 21:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Aye. I mean, yes.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 23:11 (twenty-two years ago)

No Scotland game on Freeview south of the border. It would have been preferable to using up channels 701 and 702 with analysis, highlights reel, stats and yr txt msgs of Eng-Lie. In fact, we don't get the regional channels at all. A shame, the promise of S4C2 a big factor in the decision to digitise myself.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 11 September 2003 06:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I've now discovered that 701/702 on Freeview are on a UK-wide multiplex, and always show England-specific events (i.e. football, rugby), so living in Scotland you could (have) conceivably watch(ed) Ger-Sco on BBC1Sco and Eng-Lie on the interactive service (though maybe just quarter- or half-screen).

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 11 September 2003 08:33 (twenty-two years ago)

701/702? Really. Is that what you get by pressing the red button?

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 11 September 2003 08:36 (twenty-two years ago)

those brawls in the Scotland game were fantastic

chris (chris), Thursday, 11 September 2003 08:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Nick: yeah, I think 703 is some kind of dummy channel for carrying all the additional MHEG text you get on BBCi. I suppose just having two full-screen auxiliary channels on Freeview means just two extra courts for Wimbledon next year (satellite folks get more, I think), but that's better than AllHenmanAllTheTime.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 11 September 2003 09:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yes - I remember it was very good for Wimbledon.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 11 September 2003 09:16 (twenty-two years ago)

But I noticed on Digital Spy that you can set 701/702 to whatever default local region you want. Sky digital has all the local regions up in 850's (much fun recently comparing Look North with Midlands Today and seeing what had the most fatuous lead story).

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 11 September 2003 09:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Sky Digital access to nationwide local programming is the nail in a coffin I can't quite identify.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 11 September 2003 09:26 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, we could've switched between two versions of the england match (BBC1 england and Sky), the scotland match (BBC1 Scotland) and the wales match (on BBC2 wales) and probably Cyprus/Malta on eurosport if we'd wanted to. didn't check if the N Ireland game was on...

freeview is wierd...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 11 September 2003 09:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Eurosport had no live footie last night weirdly, but it had all the highlights that the BBC didn't show i.e. France V Slovenia

chris (chris), Thursday, 11 September 2003 09:30 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm watching highlights of Russia v Switzerland now, Eurosport rules (except when they insist on showing all the France games live at the expense of a far more riveting fixture - they should've had Spain v Ukraine or Czechs v Holland last night surely)

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 11 September 2003 11:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Eurosport commentary is so bad. It's like they're not there. Maybe they're not.

I thought the same about the BBC Scotlan Sportscene coverage of the Scotland game yesterday. Awful.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 11 September 2003 11:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyone seen the post match interview? Just been sent an MPEG with Vogts being dignified, with Christian Dailly shouting about 'fucking cheating bastards' loudly in the background. Class.

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 11 September 2003 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

i MUST hear this!

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 11 September 2003 13:59 (twenty-two years ago)

He also did a wanker sign at the ref during the match. It was great. Berti's attempt at trying to keep a straight face and signify to Dailly to shut up as he was live on BBC1 was also classic.

They then cut back to Dougie Donnelly in the studio and you could tell him and Gordons Strachan and Smith had been laughing at it, they were trying politely to say that he was speaking for the nation and turned it round to a discussion on the various refereeing decisions, but you could tell they were like "wish we could have said that". I wasn't really paying huge amounts of attention though as me, mr ailsa and AllyC were all pissing ourselves laughing at the time.

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 11 September 2003 21:47 (twenty-two years ago)

i heard the bleeped out version on the Today programme this morning, it was mainly bleep.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 11 September 2003 22:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I can email this - 464K Mpeg - to those who state they want it. Do you want it?

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 12 September 2003 08:34 (twenty-two years ago)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 12 September 2003 10:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 12 September 2003 10:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait, Boyler was on Newsnight?

chris (chris), Friday, 12 September 2003 10:18 (twenty-two years ago)

chris not only was boyler on, but several exiles of your acquaintence also!!! UP THE CITY etc...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 12 September 2003 10:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I was. Feature on Supporters Trust, built aroun the Exeter take-over. I thought it a good piece - well constructed, some lovely touches, and intelligently edited. Though I do not like my head on TV. I must get some training to avoid top lip tightness.

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 12 September 2003 10:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Dave - as I said elsewhere - I'd be more concerned about the shoulder pads in that pinstripe jacket. Or it could be a posture issue. Other than that - lucid, winning and soigne. Also: soothing, sexy and nutritious.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Friday, 12 September 2003 10:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I heart you.

Shoulder pads are fine, but was slightly slouching. Posture, posture, posture.

PS - where have you said this elsewhere < / egotistical bastard >

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 12 September 2003 10:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Michael said 'sexy'. Hear him laydeez.

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 12 September 2003 10:34 (twenty-two years ago)

(Oh, I said precisely the same thing - except fresher, cos it was the first time I'd typed it - on some other unrelated thread last night. Can't remember now.)

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Friday, 12 September 2003 10:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Dave B you can send me the 464k mpeg if you please

stevem (blueski), Friday, 12 September 2003 11:32 (twenty-two years ago)

It's gorn.

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 12 September 2003 11:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I would show people the thing at tonight's FAP, but I don't wish to be in a pub in this area gettinga G4 out whilst wearing flared jeans and krazy trainers.

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 12 September 2003 11:37 (twenty-two years ago)

two months pass...
