The Black Congressional Caucus hosted the Democratic contender debates tonight. Included was the question, "What's Your Favorite Song?"

Mosley-Braun: "'You Gotta Be.'"
Sharpton: "My favorite song is James Brown's song on the Republican Party, 'Talkin Loud, Sayin Nothing.'"
Edwards: "I gotta follow that? All right--John Cougar Mellencamp, 'Small Town.'"
Kerry: "Bruce Springsteen, 'No Surrender.'"
Dean: "One you've never heard of--Wyclef Jean, 'Jaspora.'"
Lieberman: "Like a good politician, I'm gonna take two--'Don't Stop Thinkin' About Tomorrow'--remember that one?--and the classic Frank Sinatra, 'My Way'--we're gonna do it our way in 2004."
Kucinich: "John Lennon 'Imagine'--as in imagine a new America."
Gephardt: "Bruce Springsteen 'Born in the U.S.A.'"
Graham: "Jimmy Buffett 'Changes in Attitudes, Changes in Latitudes'--we're gonna change some attitudes and latitudes!"

obv Dean wins

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 10 September 2003 00:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean at least he didn't have a damn slogan to follow it

yeah, Wednesday, 10 September 2003 00:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Is Gephardt pulling a Reagan '84?

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 00:49 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah Dean got lots of applause for the Wyclef mention. he *does* have a 17-year-old kid but calling out an album track is pretty good. CMB, Edwards, Kerry, and Kucinich (I think) picked their campaign songs. My campaign song choice for Edwards has a title that's very similar to a slogan oft-used by another candidate.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 00:53 (twenty-two years ago)

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 02:27 (twenty-two years ago)

today's NY Daily News gossip- ;)

Howard Dean out-hipped his Democratic rivals last week when he announced at their Baltimore debate that his favorite song was Wyclef Jean's "Jaspora." Informed of Dean's choice, the former Fugee told us, "Yo, yo, I'm gonna vote for Howard Dean!"

daria g (daria g), Friday, 19 September 2003 17:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Does anyone have translated lyrics for the song?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 19 September 2003 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Right here (it should be noted "Jaspora" is not in English and has a bad-ass bouncy as fuck Carribean beat):

Men sa le monde antye tap tann
Wyclef ki sot nan Fugee.

Jeremi! Ayiti! Potoprins! Flatbush!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 19 September 2003 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the chorus translates to this:

teeny (teeny), Friday, 19 September 2003 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I think this actually sums up why I like Dean so much more than the others; it's like he didn't come up with this big (attempted) meaningful song/slogan-for-his-campaign, he just told 'em a song he really liked.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 19 September 2003 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

sounds meaningful from the stuff I can figure out, and from Xgau

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 19 September 2003 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Someone weighs in on the Washington Post op-ed pages.

"It took a question about music -- "What's your favorite song?" -- to produce the only authentic moments at the recent Democratic debate in Baltimore and to show just how unsatisfying these campaign events have become."

daria g (daria g), Sunday, 21 September 2003 05:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I actually liked Sharpton's answer best, but only because he picked the best song.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 21 September 2003 05:57 (twenty-two years ago)

what if edwards had said something by ludacris?

Little Big Macher (llamasfur), Sunday, 21 September 2003 06:03 (twenty-two years ago)

He could have said anything, really, and it would have been an improvement. His campaign theme song? Unimaginative AND soulless.

What would Wesley Clark have said?

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 21 September 2003 06:05 (twenty-two years ago)

if Graham had to pick a Jimmy Buffett song, why couldn't it have been "My Head Hurts, My Feet Stink, and I Don't Love Jesus"?

Little Big Macher (llamasfur), Sunday, 21 September 2003 06:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I think this actually sums up why I like Dean so much more than the others; it's like he didn't come up with this big (attempted) meaningful song/slogan-for-his-campaign, he just told 'em a song he really liked.
Maybe, maybe not. One of the criticisms has been that Vermont is lily-white, how will Dean connect with minority voters, etc. - "Why, my favorite song is a hip-hop tune. My black friend..."

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Sunday, 21 September 2003 06:48 (twenty-two years ago)

if he was trying to reach out to black voters he wouldn't have picked a wyclef song

cinniblount (James Blount), Sunday, 21 September 2003 07:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Not reach out to black voters, just deflect some "damn, you're white" criticism.

Really, I don't think that was the point at all, just saying that assuming Dean's intentions were pure is a bit naive.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Sunday, 21 September 2003 07:10 (twenty-two years ago)

OTOH, if Dean was quick enough to analyze the situation, figure out a way his answer wouldn't look like pandering while giving him some political capital - nice.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Sunday, 21 September 2003 07:19 (twenty-two years ago)

still can't believe lieberman lamed out with "don't stop"!

s1utsky (slutsky), Sunday, 21 September 2003 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, wyclef is not cool, I just figured he picked a song he liked. is it actually not a crappy song? I kinda figured almost any song named by a politician had to suck.

Wu-Tang Clan "C.R.E.A.M."

Dean wins the Jeanne Fury vote?

This article also tells us that his NY campaign director's name is "Ethan Geto".

and seriously clinton was a cool president and all but what was up with that that wack lite jazz shit

haha i was working in a dc music store in december 1999 right after grover washington, jr died--clinton came in christmas shopping, and coming across the empty grover section (everyone's records sell out when they die) actually summoned up a tear and said something about grover being a great friend of his. that guy is/was masterful.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 23:20 (twenty-one years ago)
