A thread to keep me awake and to talk about moving house

I just got back into work after a hellish day and a half of moving and much more still to do. My back is killing me and my brain has given up completely. So, what's been happening, how are you all, any heart-warming or cautionary tales about moving house? etc.

Liz moved the other week. She began after work and finished v. tired at around 2:30AM before returning to work the next morning.

I moved a couple of months ago. My main piece of advice is to not move to a 2nd floor flat when you own lots of heavy stuff. I realise it may be too late to act upon this.

Also, make sure you've remembered all the bits of any disassembled furniture, shelving etc. when you get around to putting it back together again.

Haha yes all tragically too late. Desperate discussions about selling our sofa commenced at about 1pm yesterday, while it was stuck firmly in a doorway. And as for the washing machine...

Did you ever get the sofa out of the doorway, or is it stuck there for good?

(Douglas Adams to thread, natch)

Eek! You had to move propah furniture as well? Oh the joy of the furnished flatX0r.

We seem to have accumulated far too much furniture over the last two years. In fact we are very minimalist when it comes to actual bits and pieces of STUFF. But it's the tables and chairs and fridges and *grrrrrrrrrrrr* washing machines - you know they have a big block of CONCRETE inside them!? - and sofas (yes it did move and we're not selling it after all) that make moving a major operation.

Funniest thing was watching the transformation of our friend Tim from mild-mannered gardener into roaring White Van Man From The Hellmouth Itself.

The concrete's there to stop them escaping via the ceiling during final spin.

Worst thing to move: a couple of shelf-loads of books and comics. I thought it would be a terrific idea to pack as many of them as possible into one large box (former home of PC monitor). Needless to say: once full, box was impossible to lift without aid of forklift. Once half emptied, box could be lifted by reasonably fit man. Luckily, I was living with one at the time.

Good work, Archel. Before you know it you'll get to the fun part - finding places for things and decorating all over again.

I'll be moving in the next 3 months. I'm very excited about it. But also, this time we're going to sell most of our furniture since it would be prohibitively expensive to move it all out to the mid-west. I'm imagining a poor man's estate sale where we stick post-it notes on everything and let people walk around our apartment! You buy it, you take it away. That sort of thing.

I know that's why the concrete's there rob! But believe me it seems a lot less vital when you're hauling it down a flight of stairs.

My pay off for being a stationery troll finally arrived: the boxes my orders come in are the perfect size for a liftable amount of books :)

Good luck Sarah! (Or, sell all your furniture on ebay.)

Sounds great! You should do it like in Ghostworld, where you actually abuse anyone that wants to buy anything cos you dont really want to sell it!

*rapidly patents removable-ballast washing machine, awaits riches*
