Spurred by Maria popping up on another thread, but I just wanted to know how everyone's finding things.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

it'd be a lot better if it wasn't for that crusty old dean.

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 17:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Can't talk - I'm in the middle of a panty raid.

NA (Nick A.), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 17:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm feeling sorry for the double cohort kids in Ontario. Two graduating classes in one year. OUCH.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I stupidly signed up for GER101 again because I was like, oh it must be much harder in the Ivy League. It's a total immersion class! OH BOY WAS I WRONG. I want to stab all those people in the face. IHR SIND EINE DUMKOFFEN FUCK YOU.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

(freakily 99 Luftballoons just came on my coworker's radio as I posted that, wtf)

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I might be going back to do an Information Management MA, so that I can be a proper certified library person. With a bit of luck and organisation I might be starting in 3 weeks, so it'll probably be February. Two MA's is excessive.

swansong -- (jel), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

it's good in many ways, but there's so much work i can hardly keep up. this is only the first full week of classes, though, so maybe i'll get used to it. (i came to college to get an education, i know, but i wouldn't mind some spare time to party and do clubs and such.)

Maria (Maria), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 18:30 (twenty-two years ago)

and thanks for asking, dan :)

Maria (Maria), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 18:30 (twenty-two years ago)

but is there a crusty old dean??

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 18:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Maria, you'll definitely get used to it. Figuring out how to manage your time is the secret hidden thing you're supposed to learn at college.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 18:52 (twenty-two years ago)

"Secret hidden thing" = the only thing?

David. (Cozen), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I might be making a biiig mistake. That could change in an hour or so tho.

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

the thang is learning what the hell the prof is asking for.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm totally wishing you the best of luck with this first semester, Maria. Take time to take care of yourself, don't be afraid to ask questions and/or ask for help, show off your intellect, and just be your usual fab self.

*quick hugs*

Just Deanna (Dee the Lurker), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Maria will rock most mightily. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 21:19 (twenty-two years ago)

thanks for the encouragement, guys.

Maria (Maria), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 23:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I might be making a biiig mistake. That could change in an hour or so tho.

I hears ya, g--ff. I'm just starting a PhD program this semester, and I alternate between "Okay, this is great, I love it here, everything's going to be fine" and "Burning shit, what on earth am I doing here, I'm making a huge mistake" pretty frequently. I'm back and forth only about a hundred times a day, so I'm improving.

Prude (Prude), Thursday, 11 September 2003 01:11 (twenty-two years ago)

After the first week or so of classes it's probably too soon to judge whether or not I've made a mistake or will like it here, but that hasn't stopped me. I think I will tolerate being here and wish I were somewhere else, somewhere more like the stereotypical utopian college experience where the largest annoyance is hackysacking knee-jerk liberals constantly smoking pot under your dorm window and not the ridiculously racist and close-minded girl across the hall who keeps worrying aloud about the prominence of goddamn IMMIGRANTS in our country. The wonderful land where papers are written weekly and not just as a sort of mid-term punishment...

I don't suppose I have much of a choice though. An undergraduate degree is pretty much mandatory and quite uncreatively I can't think of anything better to do instead. Is that how college normally is? Well, it's OK but boring and Expected To Be Completed to teach time management and give something on which to focus energy before making any decisions that will impact the Future? Oh and here's some Plato?

Perhaps.

j c, Thursday, 11 September 2003 01:46 (twenty-two years ago)

As someone who graduated this summer, I would like to point out that I am still unemployed, but I am working on my assault on the stats cock.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 11 September 2003 05:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I work at a university, in the student assosiation book store and all I can say I hope all the stupid kids that asked me a gazillion times if they had picked up the right book, and then returned it (because it didn't look like the one there friend bought), then came back to demand that I sell them the same I sold them the day before, but I sold it to some one else (who wasn't a fuckO), then the blame me for a the shit in their life, end up working as dog doo scooper's.Just so they know what I have to do to pay for my tuition.
Two more fab days left of first week.
I start my class tomorrow.

danielle g. (danielle g.), Thursday, 11 September 2003 06:05 (twenty-two years ago)

a week ago, i just discovered that the Williams College club is a block away from my office in manhattan. it made me think of maria!

Tad (llamasfur), Thursday, 11 September 2003 06:29 (twenty-two years ago)

three years pass...

dinner last night: hostess cupcakes, sunchips, cheetos, assorted candy (all given away free at some kind of casino night event sponsored by something-or-other)

breakfast this morning: several handfuls of quaker oat squares

lol college

bernard snowy, Sunday, 19 August 2007 12:01 (eighteen years ago)

i'm going back part-time this year (not 100% sorted yet, but about 98% likely).

right now i'm going: "bugger, i'm meant to be on holiday on enrolment day."

grimly fiendish, Sunday, 19 August 2007 21:09 (eighteen years ago)

I'M STILL PRETTY DRUNK AND I REALLY THOUGHT I HAD A CHANCE WITH THIS CHICK BUT THEN SHE STARTED WHINING ABOUT HER EX-BOYFRIEND AND NOT WANTING TO BE JUST A RANDOM HOOKUP OR WHATEVER

MARK HOLLIS YOU ARE MY ONLY COMFORT

bernard snowy, Monday, 20 August 2007 07:32 (eighteen years ago)

Missing enrolment day doesn't matter too much! It can all be done a week or so later in hard-to-find offices.

Zoe Espera, Monday, 20 August 2007 07:44 (eighteen years ago)

I am going to be starting junior year. I remember last fall semester getting drunk 6 times in 10 days. and also gaining 20-some pounds due to virtually unlimited meal-swipes.

lol college.

Stevie D, Monday, 20 August 2007 07:45 (eighteen years ago)

i graduated in may but i am still working at the school library and a friend of mine is a GRAD STUDENT RA (?!) and will be providing me with occasional free dining-hall swipes

impudent harlot, Monday, 20 August 2007 12:30 (eighteen years ago)

I go back to school

RJG, Monday, 20 August 2007 12:31 (eighteen years ago)

orientation on wednesday, classes start next monday. omg i am actually going to grad school woah!

tehresa, Monday, 20 August 2007 12:42 (eighteen years ago)

i am kicking myself for not making last friday my last day at job, instead i'm working til end of day tuesday and then jumping right into things on wednesday. ew.

tehresa, Monday, 20 August 2007 12:43 (eighteen years ago)

i'm only taking one class this semester cuz i'm doing the two-job thing so i can get the hell outta here sooner rather than later. but i got an A- for my first essay! (art history)

Rubyredd, Monday, 20 August 2007 13:02 (eighteen years ago)

bernard, you go to school in NC right? crazy how early y'all start.

that said: I am taking the GRE two days after classes start LOLOLOL I DON'T EVEN HAVE MY BOOKS YET.

jessie monster, Monday, 20 August 2007 15:42 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, I moved in saturday and classes start tomorrow. I thought that was pretty normal, but after talking to some other people, I guess not...

bernard snowy, Monday, 20 August 2007 15:52 (eighteen years ago)

I think all the schools in the southeast start around the same time, but NC schools are def the earliest. Pretty much everyone else starts after Labor Day.

jessie monster, Monday, 20 August 2007 15:57 (eighteen years ago)

I'm taking physical anthropology at the City College of San Francisco with a forensic anthropologist for Contra Costa County. I love his stories, even if a variety of premises usually lead to roughly the same punchlines. "So I'm like, hey buddy, what you have there is a cow bone, and you're a shitty doctor!"

MParadis, Monday, 20 August 2007 15:57 (eighteen years ago)

school starts next wednesday for me but ive been here all summer. im going through radio station training right now.

max, Monday, 20 August 2007 20:48 (eighteen years ago)

for some reason I thought you were older than me/already done with school.

jessie monster, Monday, 20 August 2007 20:49 (eighteen years ago)

The thought of returning to school makes my stomach turn.

Possibly because I spent 19 of the first 30 years of my life in school.

Really, really glad to be out.

B.L.A.M., Monday, 20 August 2007 20:56 (eighteen years ago)

xp no dude we're both 08 grads CHECK FACEBOOK

max, Monday, 20 August 2007 21:02 (eighteen years ago)

aww it's that time. for the REST OF YOU! please report back with forensic anthropology stories.

Maria, Monday, 20 August 2007 21:04 (eighteen years ago)

Starts a week from now. I am nervous bcz I am taking classes in which I am less familiar with the subject matter. I am going to have to LEARN all this NEW STUFF.

My fiancé is getting into forensic anth!

Abbott, Monday, 20 August 2007 21:07 (eighteen years ago)

What are you doing now that you've graduated, Maria? (Also, I revived your thread a couple of times, in case you hadn't seen it.)

jaymc, Monday, 20 August 2007 21:11 (eighteen years ago)

It's the cool thing, I hear! And lots of good jokes come out of it.

xpost - hi! this summer i went on an archaeological dig, and now i am going to europe on a watson-type fellowship, so i am being busily and happily unemployed for the time being.

Maria, Monday, 20 August 2007 21:16 (eighteen years ago)

starting my second (and final) year tomorrow! the semester started today but i don't have any monday classes.

get bent, Monday, 20 August 2007 21:49 (eighteen years ago)

on wednesday i find out for certain whether i've got the internship i'm up for. they're VOTING on me at their meeting. there's no competition at this stage, it's just approve or deny, plus going over the scope of work. they've already approved the money i'd be getting if, hypothetically, they retained me. i'm nervous!

get bent, Monday, 20 August 2007 21:53 (eighteen years ago)

i got homework assignment via email today and we have not had class yet! oh man freaking out because i have not been a student in ages and now i am like 'oh shit you can't just pretend this is some job you don't care about, you have to buckle down and work!'

tehresa, Monday, 20 August 2007 22:54 (eighteen years ago)

my roommate is listening to something called "Fever for the Flava" by Hot Action Cop

bernard snowy, Monday, 20 August 2007 23:04 (eighteen years ago)

aw man that looked much cooler when I typed it in the box down here

bernard snowy, Monday, 20 August 2007 23:04 (eighteen years ago)

(the emoticon I mean)

bernard snowy, Monday, 20 August 2007 23:04 (eighteen years ago)

I start up again Wednesday, and I'm taking 18 hours, which weighted for schools that don't suck is probably equivalent to a regular course load. One more year of this and hopefully some school district will deem me fit to teach students like 5 or 6 years younger than me.

m bison, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 00:21 (eighteen years ago)

19 credits, 4 of which are a 20 hour a week internship/fellowship; the other 15 are all real courses. i am scared.

tehresa, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 00:38 (eighteen years ago)

Stevie, where the hell did you put those 20 pounds?

Casuistry, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 00:42 (eighteen years ago)

IN MAH BELLEH (which used to sort of be concave and is now a bit not concave)

Stevie D, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 02:20 (eighteen years ago)

I'm starting grad school on Thursday.

I still feel like a little kid.

Z S, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 02:32 (eighteen years ago)

have any of you ever signed up for a class only to receive NO INDICATION WHATSOEVER of where the class is going to be held? the registration website says nothing, my e-mail to the prof went unreturned, and the people in the office at the architecture school said they hadn't heard anything from her either. i wandered around the entire building looking for signs of life, but got nothing. guess i'm dropping the class! better to find out now than later on that the prof is an irresponsible flake.

get bent, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 16:43 (eighteen years ago)

has never happened. Sounds a bit weird and surreal

Stevie D, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 23:57 (eighteen years ago)

That happened to me once, and the workstudy kid at the registrar tried to ask for my social security number and fucking mother's maiden name to look me up in the system!

I took a different class.

Abbott, Wednesday, 22 August 2007 01:41 (eighteen years ago)

I realised recently I started college 6 years ago. OLD.

Ronan, Wednesday, 22 August 2007 09:01 (eighteen years ago)

OLD? I started 16 years ago. That's like half my life ago, nearly.

ailsa, Wednesday, 22 August 2007 09:17 (eighteen years ago)

it's all relative I suppose

Ronan, Wednesday, 22 August 2007 12:54 (eighteen years ago)

tehresa, Wednesday, 22 August 2007 16:02 (eighteen years ago)

jessie monster, Wednesday, 22 August 2007 16:32 (eighteen years ago)

I just had a bit of a staring contest with the new director of financial aid at my daughter's college. They fucked up the amount of one of her state grants, shorting her $625 -- when I pointed out their error, he said "oh, yes, we'll get that taken care of -- but that might reduce the amount of her scholarship, because [steady stream of bullshit issued from the mouth]." I was all O RLY, this is completely news to me, and she had all the same grants and scholarships last year, what exactly is different now? He was all um-um-uh-I'll-double-check-that-and-I-apologize-if-I'm-wrong, I'M NEW HERE PLEASE DON'T HURT ME.

Rock Hardy, Wednesday, 22 August 2007 16:39 (eighteen years ago)

My college's administration is in worse shape than usual due to a big change in their computer system, so I haven't even heard what my financial loans will be for the year. Which is scary, since classes start in a few weeks...

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 22 August 2007 16:41 (eighteen years ago)

on wednesday i find out for certain whether i've got the internship i'm up for. they're VOTING on me at their meeting.

i got it

get bent, Thursday, 23 August 2007 15:17 (eighteen years ago)

congratulations~

jessie monster, Thursday, 23 August 2007 15:17 (eighteen years ago)

rock! hurrah.

grimly fiendish, Friday, 24 August 2007 21:19 (eighteen years ago)

Congrats Jody!

I just purchased my accounting book used for still $112! It is so fucking heavy! I hope my financial aid office gets their shit together and I get my correct loan amount soon or that is the only book I'll be purchasing!
