giant snake

I have this vague memory of an episode of arthur c clarke's mysterious world (gosh wow ufos and suchlike tv series iirc from the 1980s. don't believe a word) which was about lake monsters and the like. There were 2 bits thatI remembered for some reason thee other day:

1/ aerial photograph taken of amazon forest. there is a snake in the picture slithering along the ground. when the photographer worked out how big the snake was, it was impossibly huge

2/ man flying helicopter over jungle. poss amazon as well. enormous fuck-off snake rears up at helicopter!! this is a nightmare image which fills me with ph34r!!

does anyone remember this? Did my brane just make it up, or did they actually say that?

Was this series actually any good? Thee only other things i remember are
1/there are hill forts in scotland covered in vitreous material. the tv people tried, and utterly failed to find out how it was made
2/in the book, which was in the local library, they showed the "surgeon's photo" of the loch ness monster, except where the photo is normally shown cropped, they showed the complete photograph, which is obvioulsy some tiny water bird like a moorhen
3/ there was a skull made of crystal, which didn't make for much of a story, nevertheless they went on and on about it.
4/ er. oh yes, they took this picture purporting to be the loch ness monster again, but when they image-enhanced it, it turned out to be a clever hoax. the "photographer" had taken a pic of a buoy, and pained nessie over the top, so there'd be a realistic reflection in the water. Poor nessie. The evidence does look pretty sketchy haha.

NB that I don't believe a word of any of this stuff, but that doesn't make it any less entertaining. Sometimes.

The only thing I now remember is him walking across the beach with an umbrella. Why did he have an umbrella? Do fight off giant snakes?

I remember the snake episode, though I don't think I saw the whole thing. I kind of remember 50 ft as the estimated length, which is not really that huge considering anacondas get to 30 ft or so. I also remember it being in Africa rather than South America.

(the pic above is apparently the snake seen from the helicopter. Googling various stuff suggests that it was photographed in the belgian congo, that the snake is an unknown species, and the length is 40-50 feet. It appears to be one of the very, very few pictures of some cryptozoological beastie that is most likely genuine!! {it sez here at www dot roswellreallyhappenedhonest dot org haha})

That's go to be the least convincing picture evidence of all time! How are you supposed to know that the helicopter wasn't on the ground?

well then it would be the biggest fucking earthworm of all time, wouldn't it?

It looks like my childhood pet garter snake, photographed on the floor from knee height. Very impressive.

three months pass...
A couple of things...
1. the snake looks like it moving in a "s" pattern. constrictors do not move this way. So that snake is not a python, anaconda,or boa
2. the snake doesn't appear to have a pattern. like it is a solid color. not a anaconda, burmese, reticulated, carpet pyton.
3. the person who said anacondas grow 30' and that 50' is not big is way off. In 1928 the Natural History museum offered 50,000 for any snake over 30'. No one has collected and many have tried. So if the did grow that big, someone would have found one by now. But on the other hand they are capable of reaching that size, most are killed out of fear by villagers before they get that big. This pic is a no-constrictor about 6' on the gound in the desert.
4.there is a snake in Idonesia on display said to be 50' long I have seen pics it may not be that big, but it is the new world record.

I saw a program recently where some Australian (?) zoologists went into Indonesia to search out what was a reported "dragon" that had been killing all the goats in a small village. They figured out it was a big ol' snake, tracked it and caught it ON CAMERA trying to get away as they went down into the subterranean cave it was living in. It took about eight guys (two holding the head) to grab ahold of it, stretch it and measure it as they filmed everything. 25 Ft. Long.
At one point the thing started wrapping itself around one of the men and mass pounding on the snake's body ensued (they were all being very careful not to harm it). The guy got loose. Then the snake opened its mouth and lunged at the camera and that's when I almost passed out.

Pashmina, I remember pretty much all of the the things from Arthur C. Clarke's Mysterious World that you mention.

did you ever see Arthur C. Clarke's World Of Strange Powers? It was all about ghosts and telepathy and clairvoyance and stuff like that, and every episode ended with Arthur C. Clarke saying "Eh, they're just making it up".

On another note, were the charges against Arthur C Clarke dropped in the end or what?
