I HATE THE FLORIDA MARLINS!

because they just won't lose and let the Phillies get the wild card berth that they so richly deserve!

thank you

Tad (llamasfur), Thursday, 11 September 2003 04:45 (twenty-one years ago)

It was that stretch in August where they were swept by Milwaukee and Montreal and lost two of three to St. Louis that fucked them. Perfect time to get cold. Two series against Florida and another against Atlanta coming up. Who knows?

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 11 September 2003 04:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah, I ALSO HATE THE FLORIDA MARLINS!

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 11 September 2003 04:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Hehe - I actually just came over here from the ESPN page where I was checking updated standings. I totally want the Marlins to take the wild card. They're a fun team to watch. Well, actually I really wanted Montreal, but then they had to go and start sucking.

Nobody wants to watch Philly. They're boring. Plus, if they made it to the world series "Senor Smoke" Mesa would find a way to blow it.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 11 September 2003 05:11 (twenty-one years ago)

but they're my boring team!

Tad (llamasfur), Thursday, 11 September 2003 05:14 (twenty-one years ago)

you know, being a phillies fan is like being a gary numan fan -- absolute brilliance during the late seventies and early eighties, then a lot of shit after that with lotsa glimmers of fool's gold. and both keep hoping for a return that seems less and less likely to come as time goes on ...

funny how one's taste in sports teams can match one's taste in music, innit?

Tad (llamasfur), Thursday, 11 September 2003 05:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude, I rooted for the Phillies in '93 against Joe Car... whoops I mean, against the Blue Jays. THAT was a fun team to watch, what with Fregosi managing all those large, hirsute gentlemen. Shoot, at least your team has been to a world series in the last decade...

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 11 September 2003 05:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Or half-century, really.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 11 September 2003 05:41 (twenty-one years ago)

john kruk! lenny dykstra (continuing that tradition started by tug mcgraw, of mets who defect to philly and get to the series and become better players for it)!

Tad (llamasfur), Thursday, 11 September 2003 05:41 (twenty-one years ago)

i like the marlins because they're like the anti-moneyball team... all stolen bases and hit and runs and sac bunts and strikeouts...

derek lee may be the 1st baseman in SF next year.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 11 September 2003 05:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Dontrelle "It on the Mountain" Willis and a 5-tool catcher . . . what is not to love?

Tad (llamasfur), Friday, 12 September 2003 04:49 (twenty-one years ago)

If the Phanatic gets more national airtime, that cannot be a bad thing.

Leee (Leee), Friday, 12 September 2003 05:43 (twenty-one years ago)

FIRE LARRY BOWA!

Phillies don't deserve jack over shit because they should be RUNNING AWAY w/ the wildcard, instead of messing around w/ the rest of the NL like a bunch of grabass cheese-eating surrender monkeys. They trade for Mike Williams to shore up their bullpen woes = they deserve every single mother lovin' loss.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 12 September 2003 06:33 (twenty-one years ago)

*weeps over the loss of mike lowell in another fantasy league that is obv not ILB, which i stopped paying attention to because i can be a rotten loser sometimes and the whole randy johnson debacle was just too aggravating*

maura (maura), Friday, 12 September 2003 17:14 (twenty-one years ago)

well, but not "paying attention" = ruins league for everyone else who is.

I'm not saying I'm just saying.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 12 September 2003 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

It's one thing to stop paying attention with 3 weeks left in the season. It's another thing to stop paying attention in February.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 12 September 2003 18:05 (twenty-one years ago)

oh but maura, mike lowell says he's ready to come back early!

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 12 September 2003 18:15 (twenty-one years ago)

The freakin' Marlins will probably win the whole thing, the owner will sell off all of the players and next year they will be playing to fifty people.

Oh wait a minute...that already happened.

earlnash, Friday, 12 September 2003 18:58 (twenty-one years ago)

:p

maura (maura), Saturday, 13 September 2003 04:03 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, but larry bowa is the link to the 1980 phillies! for that reason alone, he shouldn't go anywhere.

besides, the real problem isn't bowa -- it's underperforming and overpaid players. until jim thome started getting hot, it was all about lieberthal (miracle of miracles that he was able to remain healthy) and the pitching staff. and, as if to really dig the knife into the ribs, the fuckin' mets want kevin millwood -- to the point that glavine's been calling him up to try to convince him to come on over (can you can "tampering"? this is yet another reason why i hate the mets, that entire organization can eat a big dick).

two weeks pass...
2 days late but ...

DAMN MARLINS! CAN BOWA! AND THE FUCKING METS CAN TAKE MILLWOOD (THROW IN MESA, TOO)!!

Little Big Macher (llamasfur), Saturday, 27 September 2003 10:36 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
it's time to revive this thread ... for all of the ILXor cubbies fans to hate on the stinky fish!

Little Big Macher (llamasfur), Thursday, 16 October 2003 04:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Heh. I remember when you started this thread, Tad, I thought it was so quaint: "Aww, a Phillies fan." But then when I saw it on the New Answers page just now, I nodded solemnly and thought, "I feel ya, man."

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 16 October 2003 05:07 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm so corny ... last week on yom kippur, i had the day off. so i took the subway down to Pattison Street to see the Vet one last time before they tear it down.

Little Big Macher (llamasfur), Thursday, 16 October 2003 05:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't monopolize the ichthyphobia in the name of Cubs fans, the Giants got a thing too.

Leee (Leee), Thursday, 16 October 2003 05:15 (twenty-one years ago)

marlin-hate is all-encompassing!

Little Big Macher (llamasfur), Thursday, 16 October 2003 05:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Not if you're Mr. Diamond. (Have you checked the Cubs thread lately?)

Anyway, group hug?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 16 October 2003 05:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Hahah we're the post-Marlins support group!

Leee (Leee), Thursday, 16 October 2003 05:23 (twenty-one years ago)

let's see -- phillies fans, cubs fans, giants fans. all we need now are some ILXor indians fans and we'll be all set!

Little Big Macher (llamasfur), Thursday, 16 October 2003 05:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Heh, is anyone on ILX actually in Cleveland?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 16 October 2003 05:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Cleve-what?

Leee (Leee), Thursday, 16 October 2003 05:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I was rooting for the Cubs, but I'm okay with the Marlins, too. Pudge makes everything OK.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 16 October 2003 05:37 (twenty-one years ago)

he does!

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 16 October 2003 05:38 (twenty-one years ago)

He does not.

jackson anderville, Thursday, 16 October 2003 05:40 (twenty-one years ago)

The best outcome would be the Sox winning the WS in seven, but somehow Pudge gets WS/playoff MVP (whichever one baseball gives out)

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 16 October 2003 05:41 (twenty-one years ago)

oh yes he does. MVP. One of the greatest things about this whole post-season is watching Rodriguez solidify it all.

Like, no can dispute it now!! Like, my kid might ask me "gee, dad, why is Ivan Rodriguez so great?!" And I can say, "Son, sit down, allow me to tell you about the 2003 playoffs. There was a man named I-Rod... and.........

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 16 October 2003 05:43 (twenty-one years ago)

What was the stat from the other night? During the playoffs, with runners in scoring position, Pudge was 6 for 12 with 10 RBIs or something.

I say god-dayum!

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 16 October 2003 05:46 (twenty-one years ago)

zzzzzzzzz....

jackson anderville, Thursday, 16 October 2003 05:47 (twenty-one years ago)

is jackson anderville really nomar?

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 16 October 2003 05:50 (twenty-one years ago)

risp - I scoff at thee!

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 16 October 2003 05:51 (twenty-one years ago)

*shrug*

all I know is that I told "Jackson" last night that "kid k" was 3rd in the league in walks.

I did, in fact, impart that fact about "kid k" to "jackson". I swear that I did.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 16 October 2003 06:01 (twenty-one years ago)

And he was just as amazed at your "insight" then as now. kid k = brett favre for precisely this reason. brilliance = brilliance, walks/wp = interceptions.

jackson anderville, Thursday, 16 October 2003 06:03 (twenty-one years ago)

is kid k josh beckett?

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 16 October 2003 06:05 (twenty-one years ago)

ask the cubs

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 16 October 2003 06:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Brett Favre is a bad comparison, having led his team to Super Bowl championships.

Peyton Making:Kid K

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 16 October 2003 06:07 (twenty-one years ago)

One super bowl, actually ... see what I mean?

jackson anderville, Thursday, 16 October 2003 06:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Heh, is anyone on ILX actually in Cleveland?

Jeff W (who occasionally posts) is in Cle.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Thursday, 16 October 2003 07:09 (twenty-one years ago)

jackson I do not see what you mean. elaborate.

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 16 October 2003 07:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Even if the Yanx get to the WS, are the Fish still the overdogs? They have nothing but the look of Team of Destiny.

Leee (Leee), Thursday, 16 October 2003 17:55 (twenty-one years ago)

marlin-hate is all-encompassing!

I do not hate the Marlins. They are a great team and have exciting players. Pudge's defensive play to end the Giants series was super-thrilling, as are basepath menaces Pierre and Castillo. Anything but AL-style home run derby ball like last year, yawn.

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 16 October 2003 18:02 (twenty-one years ago)

jackson I do not see what you mean. elaborate.

People have this 'sense' thanx to his excellence, dominance, sheer leadingmanness that Brett's accomplished more than he has. While his chances of actually getting a second legend-cementing ring grow slimmer daily. Despite having been the most amazing thing for 10+ years (see petulant Braves remark of a few nights back). And why? Well, too much has rested on his shoulders--not enough quality supporting players--and for all his brilliance, he's def. got this crippling forcing-it-to-happen Achilles' heel: the interceptions. I think lots of fans, "true" and otherwise, have this real blind spot for Kerry's flaws, and a similarly inflated notion of what he's really done to date.

Which is ultimately a shame 'cause both men's brash/out-of control downsides are to a huge degree this glorious component of their charismatic personae, I think. (A cliche, I know, but so what.) Not that you don't root for them to triumph over themselves, but the battle is essential to their darkling appeal bla bla bla ...

(All that said, yeah, Keery's not quite Brett yet. But he just got very close--one World Series, and they'd be even ... oh, who am I fucking kidding.)

[depression resumes]

jackson anderville, Thursday, 16 October 2003 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

(pause)

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

brian nemtusak (sanlazaro), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 03:25 (twenty-one years ago)

is dontrelle willis the most mediocre player given this much lip-service?

"ooh neat windup"

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 03:28 (twenty-one years ago)

And Beckett takes the loss. Awwww ...

brian nemtusak (sanlazaro), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 03:34 (twenty-one years ago)

next year, ILB will have a fantasy stat for inherited run average...

OR ELSE!!!

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 03:37 (twenty-one years ago)

YANKEES! How ya doin'!!!!

Allyzay, Wednesday, 22 October 2003 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Dontrelle is what, 21?. A little early to call him a bust. (Next I will defend Rick Ankiel.) Soriano and Castillo are apparently going mono a mono in the dead weight at the top of the line-up category. I do like watching Yankee pitchers having to bat. Hopefully someone will bean Rivera to expose his metallic frame underneatrh.

bnw (bnw), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

looks like Donut Bitch is a prophet ... and add yankees fans to the list of marlins hatas

(but, pace the Icy Hott Stuntaz -- DON'T HATE, APPRECIATE! the marlins outplayed the yanks and turned Yankee Stadium quieter than a graveyard when they did, so hats off to them!)

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 27 October 2003 04:12 (twenty-one years ago)

You know, this Marlins hate may be misdirected. Weren't the Phils supposed to hang on to the wild card, Tad?

Leee (Leee), Monday, 27 October 2003 04:16 (twenty-one years ago)

here i am, trying to be a gracious loser ... and you come along, leee! :-)

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 27 October 2003 04:22 (twenty-one years ago)

juan pierre never looked like that in colorado. good trade for both teams. better for florida cause they don't have clint hurdle and his soul patch on the bench and denny neagle blowin .18 for 8 million a year.

keith (keithmcl), Monday, 27 October 2003 04:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Heh, sorry for the salt rubbing Tad. ;)

But definitely, Florida played like a team of destiny. If I'd been a betting man, I'd have gone to Vegas with them.

Leee (Leee), Monday, 27 October 2003 04:53 (twenty-one years ago)

It's not like the Yankees aren't just going to go and win it next year, so it's all good.

Allyzay, Monday, 27 October 2003 04:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Didn't they say that last year?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 27 October 2003 05:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I liked that joke better the way Yancey told it last night, "Didn't they say that last year? And the year before?" "They did win the year before." "Shit."

Allyzay, Monday, 27 October 2003 05:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually it was the year before the year before.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 27 October 2003 05:32 (twenty-one years ago)

When was the time that they lost to the Diamondbacks?

Allyzay, Monday, 27 October 2003 05:45 (twenty-one years ago)

2001.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 27 October 2003 05:46 (twenty-one years ago)

juan pierre never looked like that in colorado.

excluding 2001

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 27 October 2003 06:18 (twenty-one years ago)

to get back to leee's point ... i'm reconciled to the idea that the phillies will never win another world series so long as i live. if they do, then i'll know we're living in the End Times in which case we're all fucked anyway ...

besides, steinbrenner will just fire, release, or trade everyone who pissed him off ... so they'll be back, next year or the year after that. that's inevitable.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 27 October 2003 06:24 (twenty-one years ago)

the thing I love about the Marlins is the way they totally got rid of their bashers - Wilson, Floyd - and won it with, in Earl Weaver's terminology, "fleas". I mean Wilson lead the league in RBI! But Pierre was the more valuable player.

And Beckett was phenomenal.

Just a great, great story, and a pleasure to watch it unfold.
