Calthorpe Arms, Calthorpe St, Pentoville, London Tomorrow night.

no idea if I'll be there but I thought it deserved it's own thread.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 11 September 2003 09:42 (twenty-two years ago)

YA??

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 11 September 2003 09:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Yet Another.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 11 September 2003 09:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Obligatory Fancyapint link.

Amazingly, it appears to be near Ed's house ;)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 11 September 2003 09:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Howerver, the choice of pub had nothing to do with me.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 11 September 2003 09:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Cripes! Does that area really count as Pentonville? Cool!

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 11 September 2003 09:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Not entirely sure, it's not really clerkenwell or bloomsbury, it could be mount pleasant, kings cross or new river as well.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 11 September 2003 10:12 (twenty-two years ago)

So near the Quin too.... Hmm clove.

Though I may not be there.

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 11 September 2003 10:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I think of it as Mount Pleasant though I'd maybe accept Clerkenwell. New River sounds like an invention of Estate Agents to me (though there are of course tons of lost London names). It doesn't feel like Bloomsbury. The reason I asked is because I always thought of the Pentonville Road as kind of the Southern border of Pentonville.

I love nerdy London details.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 11 September 2003 11:33 (twenty-two years ago)

What is it about adding 'the' in front of roads in London? It gets on my tits something chronic.

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 11 September 2003 11:34 (twenty-two years ago)

New river was what the area around sadlers wells was called when the new river conduit bringing water to the are was still in existence.

I always thought of the area between kings cross road and amwell st and below pentonville rd as pentonville,

Ed (dali), Thursday, 11 September 2003 11:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Davey B: I used to have a similar thing in the North... the silly accents they all put on up there.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 11 September 2003 11:42 (twenty-two years ago)

With that post Tim, you have escalated a potential debate into a FITE. There is no room for compromise. To the death etc.

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 11 September 2003 11:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Hooray!

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 11 September 2003 11:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Right - bus route figured out, will hopefully be there.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 11 September 2003 11:57 (twenty-two years ago)

17. 45. 46 are the closest.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 11 September 2003 12:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah if you really want to take the bus WBS then the 45 from Streatham goes right past the Calthorpe.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 11 September 2003 12:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Does it? Oh. Cos the TFL website told me to go to Holborn and get the 243. But if the 45 works, then I can do that. Think it goes back through Elephant too. Swish.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 11 September 2003 12:04 (twenty-two years ago)

TFL website? TFL website? Pah.

(A train to Kings Cross Thameslink would be quicker of course).

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 11 September 2003 12:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Or even to farringdon.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 11 September 2003 12:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Can't be arsed with paying. Got me bus pass till Tuesday, that'll do me fine.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 11 September 2003 12:10 (twenty-two years ago)

WBS you are my hero. All that 243 business sounds like nonsense to me.

If any other unwary travellers might feel the impulse to follow my poor quality advice, be warned: Ed's right about Farringdon.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 11 September 2003 12:13 (twenty-two years ago)

It's probably about equidistant between the two but coming from the south or east your better of alighting at farringdon.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 11 September 2003 12:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Although the route from KXT is simpler I am forced to concur with you yet again, Ed.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 11 September 2003 12:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Mount Pleasant in DC is nice.

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 11 September 2003 20:46 (twenty-two years ago)

It was never a midden?

Ed (dali), Thursday, 11 September 2003 20:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I love how your accents get stronger when you're talking amongst yourselves.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 11 September 2003 21:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I also like how threads announcing FAPs that don't mention a city are automatically assumed to be in London.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 11 September 2003 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

It is the default, yes. This is right and proper.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 11 September 2003 21:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, the ILE centre of gravity has swung back to London.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 11 September 2003 21:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I also like how threads announcing FAPs that don't mention a city are automatically assumed to be in London.

This prompts the (possibly ignorant) question: which countries other than the UK even have pints?

Answers on a schooner...

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 12 September 2003 00:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Jaymc: London's FAPs are just FAPs in exactly the same way as UK postage stamps don't have to have the country's name written on them, or our Football Association is called The Football Association or The Times is just called The Times.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 12 September 2003 07:56 (twenty-two years ago)

its also worth noting that the pendulum seems to have swung back from nyc a little, it was quite surprising, and not a little endearing, to see british people on ilx again recently

gareth (gareth), Friday, 12 September 2003 08:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Looks like I will be there tonight - there was an acquaintance's birthday party, and I was waiting for news of how many of my friends were planning to attend. The answer is one, and he will arrive late (due to work) and leave early (because he's off on his hols tomorrow), so I will FAP instead. I think it's only me and William who have said we are going to be there, so far! I'll be there sometime between 5.30 and 6.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 12 September 2003 10:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll be there, a bit later on but I'll be there.

Ed (dali), Friday, 12 September 2003 10:38 (twenty-two years ago)

G & M said they'd come too.

Ed (dali), Friday, 12 September 2003 10:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll be there. Probably from about 8-ish.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 12 September 2003 10:40 (twenty-two years ago)

But obv G&M won't get there til 8.

This thread btw shows the error of using time relative terminology in thread titles.

Pete (Pete), Friday, 12 September 2003 10:41 (twenty-two years ago)

i will be there for a bit, but then have to hurry off and get a cheque countersigned across town!!

bah: reasons not to be a responsible grown-up #1394677913

mark s (mark s), Friday, 12 September 2003 10:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd love to come along tonight, but I've got to pack tonight, as moving tomorrow. I hope, once settled, that I'll be along to a FAP, preferably ahead of the month of ruin.

Alan (Alan), Friday, 12 September 2003 10:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll be there from early on. The Ordinary is special but the Special is ordinary.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 12 September 2003 10:45 (twenty-two years ago)

right now a booze-up would be just what the doctor ordered, but I think Vicky coming back from a week away takes precedence.

chris (chris), Friday, 12 September 2003 10:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I will be there. I have already had my first ale of the day and it's left me thirsty for more.

Ricardo (RickyT), Friday, 12 September 2003 11:27 (twenty-two years ago)

teehee, i have to go to a leaving do, but that'll just be a couple, so i should be over by, ooh, 6.30 at a guess.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 12 September 2003 11:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Have a good time you lot, it certainly sounds like you will. Someone had better take pics & post them!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 12 September 2003 11:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Someone had better not.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 12 September 2003 11:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Aww Tim, don't be so bashful!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 12 September 2003 11:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Ti is 75% native american pink, that's why he doesn't like it...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 12 September 2003 11:46 (twenty-two years ago)

TiM (obv). also "native american, pink"

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 12 September 2003 11:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Everyone knows Ti is native american, but Tim aswell, jeez, who'd have thought it!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 12 September 2003 11:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I am not a swell.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 12 September 2003 11:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I am shuffling around several important engagements to attend this one*, and I can't wait to see you all there!

*Certainly a lie

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 12 September 2003 12:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Will someone please bring a camera that takes a picture of Martin accurately, please?!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 12 September 2003 12:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I have my special Deceiv-o-cam.

Pete (Pete), Friday, 12 September 2003 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Right, not that one.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 12 September 2003 12:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I will be there.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 12 September 2003 13:17 (twenty-two years ago)

So will the phone! (Just got yr email tracer)

Tom (Groke), Friday, 12 September 2003 13:18 (twenty-two years ago)

i think i'll be there, for a bit, and i think anna will be too. i'm not sure what time she's getting back from paris though.

toby (tsg20), Friday, 12 September 2003 13:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I am reliably informed that Cyprus has pints.

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 12 September 2003 13:30 (twenty-two years ago)

get in! Vicky's all but back home all ready and wants booze, so we'll be there too. What time is early doors as I'm leaving here in about half an hour or so.

chris (chris), Friday, 12 September 2003 13:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Cyprus does indeed have pints. And I shall be attempting to reduce the number it has, later on this evening. It may be a lost cause, but I believe it is my duty to at least try...

Charlie B. (Charlie B.), Friday, 12 September 2003 13:35 (twenty-two years ago)

What kind of booze do they serve in those pints? Bittoh? Or lager for squaddies?

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 12 September 2003 13:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris I expect to be there not long after half past five.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 12 September 2003 13:48 (twenty-two years ago)

cool, I'm leaving..... wait for it..... now!

chris (chris), Friday, 12 September 2003 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

hooray!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 12 September 2003 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Unfortunately, real ale is not served. Anyway, even if it were, it's too bloody hot to drink most bitter most of the year. Fortunately, there're a nice couple of properly brewed pilsners that go down a treat in this heat. :o)

Charlie B. (Charlie B.), Friday, 12 September 2003 14:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I will be there in spirit.

adaml (adaml), Friday, 12 September 2003 14:06 (twenty-two years ago)

wish i could be there (to face the wrath of the Hopkins) but sadly i have to go to Watford tonight - if i don't make it back alive tell my computer i love her

stevem (blueski), Friday, 12 September 2003 14:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I was there in spirit!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 12 September 2003 23:16 (twenty-two years ago)

And Dave B of course. I was very wrong about Workington BTW.

Ricardo (RickyT), Friday, 12 September 2003 23:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Where was William The Bloody?

Ricardo (RickyT), Friday, 12 September 2003 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

A fine night! Thanks to Ric for listening to my science rantings. Typical of me: faced with a man with degrees in physics from Oxford AND Cambridge, I proceed to rant at him about science! Hurrah! I have an A Level!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 12 September 2003 23:39 (twenty-two years ago)

The Ordinary was very special. The bar next to the kebab stop had a very interesting clientele and seeemed to be open well into the night.

Mary (Mary), Saturday, 13 September 2003 10:28 (twenty-two years ago)

ed had take-out kebabs TWICE in one evening, once pre-ruin once post-ruin

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 13 September 2003 10:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I am bad

Ed (dali), Saturday, 13 September 2003 10:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I was sat on the kitchen floor sobbing for reasons too dull to go into.

Still, at least I got to see the grand finale of The Games... no, actually, you probably win on that count as well.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 13 September 2003 13:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Finished off the evening with martinis. Surprisingly I feel great today.

Ed (dali), Saturday, 13 September 2003 13:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I went to First Avenue and drank nothing at all!

Ed, have you gone to Lillywhite's and purchased trainers yet? Two kebabs of an evening tells me you're gonna need them ;-p.

suzy (suzy), Saturday, 13 September 2003 13:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Ed (dali), Saturday, 13 September 2003 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 13 September 2003 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)
