search and destroy, please do not post here if you want to say destroy hill, some of us are cursed with the luke skywalker fop when not using gel.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 11 September 2003 09:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I have about 7 different hair gels at home, all bought in the last 6 weeks, all are shite though Boots own brand is getting an extended run despite horrible smell.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 11 September 2003 10:03 (twenty-two years ago)

i use it very occasionally. as a general rule tho, I prefer my hair to move.

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 11 September 2003 10:05 (twenty-two years ago)

The robsterbarnet's base setting is 'wavy/fluffy' so hair gel is necessity, especially as I've been letting it grow out lately.

robster (robster), Thursday, 11 September 2003 10:10 (twenty-two years ago)

if i went outside without hair gel my friends wouldn't recognise me.

is this male make up or something?

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 11 September 2003 10:14 (twenty-two years ago)

grease = way better than gel as just weights hair down and doesn't go crisp. the trick is not to use a lot of it.

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 11 September 2003 10:17 (twenty-two years ago)

further to my comment above, I've heard it said that women generally prefer men to have hair that moves.

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 11 September 2003 10:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Male make-up is EXACTLY what it is. Especially in that nowadays I wouldn't consider going out without having used it DESPITE hating the way it makes my hair feel.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 11 September 2003 10:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes I wondered about those hair stick things, the male hair gel market is fucking competetive isn't it,

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 11 September 2003 10:23 (twenty-two years ago)

move or flop, markh?

is possible to have product in hair and for hair to move and not flop and not feel not nice.

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 11 September 2003 10:25 (twenty-two years ago)

(sorry posted by mistake)

it's competetive yes, there's some new box or new format, spray, cream, wax, stick, hula hoop, and some new gimmick, messy, remix, bedhead, etc etc etc, every week.

I am a sucker for all of this.

btw do you mean actual grease Dave? I'm cooking lamb chops later, they're an unholy terror for grease, eat well and look great.

I just want a gel which thickens my hair without separating it into little spikey renegade greasy hairs, the boots one is easily the best I've found.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 11 September 2003 10:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't car how many 80s revivals we go through, hair gel really is disgusting stuff. Surely another product (as Dave suggests) would work?

Moving hair - bruuuh.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 11 September 2003 10:27 (twenty-two years ago)

oh by RJG's definition, flop, definitely.

Hair which moves as a block is not nice.

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 11 September 2003 10:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I use the term gel to mean anything you use to style your hair

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 11 September 2003 10:29 (twenty-two years ago)

...oh and the word "robsterbarnet" makes me giggle.

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 11 September 2003 10:29 (twenty-two years ago)

(that was a response to N, not a highly interesting assertion of my values in life)

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 11 September 2003 10:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Being Italian, if I was to use hair gel, I'd just look like a spiv, so I try not to.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 11 September 2003 10:30 (twenty-two years ago)

when I had hair one could do stuff wirh I used wax rather than gel. Ronan, go for the simon price look.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 11 September 2003 10:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Well Ronan that is unusual and perhaps you shouldn't.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 11 September 2003 10:31 (twenty-two years ago)

flop is bad. flop is chaos.

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 11 September 2003 10:31 (twenty-two years ago)

flop is only bad for me if

I haven't had a haircut for months

It is windy

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 11 September 2003 10:32 (twenty-two years ago)

(that's a response to you and your usage of the word 'gel', not a comment on Simon Price's hair, though obv. that is quite unusual too)

and the great thing about Murray's is even if you shampoo, it doesn't come off, so you only have to use it like once a week

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 11 September 2003 10:36 (twenty-two years ago)

who is Simon Price? I'm sure I know but I don't.

Yes perhaps it is unusual, it was a bit of an oversight when I started the thread, if I was a moderator I'd change it.

btw do you mean actual grease Dave? I'm cooking lamb chops later, they're an unholy terror for grease, eat well and look great.

and smell appetising, too. when in doubt use lard or unsalted butter...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 11 September 2003 10:44 (twenty-two years ago)

didn't the native Americans who lived on the plains and hunted buffalo (can't remember what the tribes were called) used to rub the buffalo fat into their hair and it used to stop them going bald or something? I'm sure I read that somewhere.

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 11 September 2003 10:46 (twenty-two years ago)

What is humectancy (and should we fear it)?

Ricardo (RickyT), Thursday, 11 September 2003 10:59 (twenty-two years ago)

a substance that promotes retention of moisture (I wouldn't recommend eating it)

but "grease" is not very effective if you want to use a product to push hair up. if you want real gel, search...

hair wax stick works great on asian hair. maybe it'll work on yours.

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 11 September 2003 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Argh! Floppy hair = TOTAL AND UNENDING CLASSIC!

Chris P (Chris P), Thursday, 11 September 2003 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

WRONG.

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 11 September 2003 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

RJG RIGHT.

I currently use wax but am thinking of switching to clay. It's the best.

David. (Cozen), Thursday, 11 September 2003 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Dammit, no. I have written songs about the glories of floppy hair. If you want a hummer from me you'd best not have any crap in your hair!

(Obv you may not want a hummer from me and that's OK too.)

Chris P (Chris P), Thursday, 11 September 2003 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Floppy Hair = DUD DUD DUD! Piuma = CRAZY.

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 11 September 2003 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris, I have no product in my hair! Can I get a hummer?

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Thursday, 11 September 2003 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Thursday, 11 September 2003 17:18 (twenty-two years ago)

My hair doesn't really move ('cept in a stiff wind), so don't really need gel.

(Besides, nothing is less attractive than stroking someone's hair, and coming away with a handful of ooze)

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Thursday, 11 September 2003 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

What about a big zuffball that makes me look like I just stepped off the boat from the old country? thats what happens when i dont put 'product' in my hair

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 11 September 2003 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

zuffball = fuzzball

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 11 September 2003 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Ronan isn't your hair kind of longish? Why don't you get it cut a little shorter, then the gels or waxy stuff will work better.

After using a large number of things in my hair, I've come to prefer wax over gel. Gel gets totally stiff and looks unnaturally shiny. If you want your hair to look like plastic, it's ok. My current pick to click for waxy stuff is Bumble & Bumble's SumoTech.

Sean (Sean), Thursday, 11 September 2003 18:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I use a cocktail of black & white's wax, l'oreal creative clay and charles worthingtons hair gel. fantastic in dry weather but this current wet spate is leaving it feeling yucky and 'orrible. my hair just won't stick up however much i twist or comb or anything it just flops into a big greasy pile on my head.

JuliaA (j_bdules), Thursday, 11 September 2003 22:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I use clay or wax sometimes, even though my hair is floppy. When it's just washed, teasing a bit through it gives it a bit more definition and a bit less moppiness.

There always seems to be some new mucky word for the latest hair product. The last time I got mine cut there was this stuff that was a bit like slime in a pot.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 11 September 2003 23:05 (twenty-two years ago)

My pic didn't show up...it was supposed to be a pic of Cooper from Twin Peaks when he wakes up from his dream with one overgelled peak of hair sticking up from his head.

Is "overgelled" a word? Probably not.

I don't use hair products at all, but that Aveda stuff (humectant and anti-humectant) is pretty cool.

JuliaA (j_bdules), Friday, 12 September 2003 01:11 (twenty-two years ago)

There's nothing wrong w/product in the hair, as long as there isn't overuse where the hair is crunchy or wet looking. I wonder why people think that look is acceptable.

Nicolars (Nicole), Friday, 12 September 2003 01:59 (twenty-two years ago)

The stuff I use lately is almost like a cream. I'd get my haircut but I like it longish and swept to one side to make me look cool/like a twat.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 12 September 2003 07:28 (twenty-two years ago)

cool like a twat, that can yr other T-shirt slogan!

mark s (mark s), Friday, 12 September 2003 07:46 (twenty-two years ago)

ronan, just curious, but didn't u ask this question before, like 2 years ago ? could have sworn it..

Vic (Vic), Friday, 12 September 2003 07:58 (twenty-two years ago)

possibly!

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 12 September 2003 07:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't see it ion my wander through the archives.

Ed (dali), Friday, 12 September 2003 08:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Graham may have asked something similar. His tone was more hostile.

Ricardo (RickyT), Friday, 12 September 2003 08:18 (twenty-two years ago)

yes thats right, it was graham taking those hair gel boys to task i believe... now would he be calling ronan one of them ? :P

Vic (Vic), Friday, 12 September 2003 08:25 (twenty-two years ago)

i think he preferred to call me "fuck you"

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 12 September 2003 08:38 (twenty-two years ago)

As in short for FUCK YOU JUST FUCK YOU FUCKING FUCK?

Ricardo (RickyT), Friday, 12 September 2003 08:42 (twenty-two years ago)

(I have never before noticed that it is for "heads without discipline". I also like the fact that it contains polystyrene.)

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Friday, 12 September 2003 09:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I have that one Jerry, I find it makes my hair sticky. I also bought their "REMIX" one in the same tub about a year ago after being taken in by their cheap gimmick.
