Just A Minute - C/D?

(For those those don't know, a panel show on BBC Radio 4 where celebrated wits have to talk for a minute on a given subject without repetition, hesitation or deviation)

Funny and witty fun, or middle-class smugness supreme?

Johnney B (Johnney B), Thursday, 11 September 2003 11:01 (twenty-two years ago)

The only R4 panel game I can enjoy.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 11 September 2003 11:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Classic, mainly because of its middle-class smugness. Not as great as in the days of Derek Nimmo, but Clement Freud lives on surrounded by lesser beings.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 11 September 2003 11:05 (twenty-two years ago)

A strong case of Oxbridge smirking, as with all Radio 4 comedy.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 11 September 2003 11:06 (twenty-two years ago)

N, what about puzzle panel.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 11 September 2003 11:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Ricardo (RickyT), Thursday, 11 September 2003 11:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Idea of celebrated wits = classic.

Reality = perhaps less so.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 11 September 2003 11:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Oxbridge smirking != middle class smugness surely? I love Clement but Nicholas Parsons is such a hohoteacherhavingabitoffun.
xpost
Ricardo, Clement has a voice like an old labrador, that is the point of him.

Sam (chirombo), Thursday, 11 September 2003 11:10 (twenty-two years ago)

But it's not that funny, I have to say.

Sam (chirombo), Thursday, 11 September 2003 11:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think I've heard the Puzzle Panel.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 11 September 2003 11:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I have unreasonable issues with slow speaking people. I fear they might be my ornaments.

Ricardo (RickyT), Thursday, 11 September 2003 11:13 (twenty-two years ago)

wednesdays 13:30 some people you ahve never heard of solve riddles and puzzels with mind bending logic for the glory of it all.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 11 September 2003 11:14 (twenty-two years ago)

It sounds about as good as Quote Unquote.

Ricardo (RickyT), Thursday, 11 September 2003 11:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Everyone tonight must speak very slowly to psych Ricky T out!

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 11 September 2003 11:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I take it you're all looking forward to QI on BBC2, then...

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 11 September 2003 11:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Garrgh Quote unquote is the most awful thing on the radio that isn't libby purves.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 11 September 2003 11:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Quote Unquote is grounds for emigration. Has that got Randy Cockpig on it?
xpost
Actually I am, enormously.

Sam (chirombo), Thursday, 11 September 2003 11:17 (twenty-two years ago)

eveything's really slow on radio four, isn't it? i used to listen to it all the time when i was 12 (and they did THE FOUNDATION TRILOGY as a radio play in many parts) but hardly ever since

kenneth williams was on just a minute back then (though i expect he also counts as oxbridge on PLANET OF ANGRY DOM)

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 11 September 2003 11:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Ed that really does sound appalling.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 11 September 2003 11:17 (twenty-two years ago)

GAH OXBRIDGE TYPES ARE TAKING OVER THIS THREAD.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 11 September 2003 11:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Whats so grusome about Oxbridge types? We musn't demonize them; embrace them so we may understand them better,

Johnney B (Johnney B), Thursday, 11 September 2003 11:20 (twenty-two years ago)

My arms aren't long enough!

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 11 September 2003 11:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Er, what's happening tonight?

Ricardo (RickyT), Thursday, 11 September 2003 11:22 (twenty-two years ago)

classic, especially when paul merton is on (which hasn't happened recently i think). i like the way that he's madly competitive to win but tries to act all casual about it. it's also amusing that he and clement seem to really dislike each other.

angela (angela), Thursday, 11 September 2003 11:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Classic. Clement Freud intoning 'Uttoxeter' can improve my Monday evening no end.

And I was quite looking forward to Puzzle Panel! (But I missed it in the end.) Logic problems and word games burbling out from your radio of an afternoon? Top flight entertainment surely.

I hate Quote Unquote too, but We've Been Here Before now rivals it in sheer pointlessness.

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 11 September 2003 11:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Tomorrow I mean.

Sorry that was hesitation.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 11 September 2003 11:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I like it when Paul Merton is on - he was on last week, surely? Won it with a record score, as I recall.

The classical way to explain it is as a panel game where contestants must speak on a given subject for a minute without repetition, er, um, hesitation, repetition, deviation or aardvark.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 11 September 2003 12:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I prefer I'm sorry I haven't a clue.

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 11 September 2003 23:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I like it when Paul Merton is on - he was on last week, surely? Won it with a record score, as I recall.

damn. i've missed it _and_ the repeat then.

angela (angela), Friday, 12 September 2003 08:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Surely these days it can be heard on the interweb?

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 12 September 2003 09:06 (twenty-two years ago)

These dya syou can get all SORTS of rubbish on the interweb.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Friday, 12 September 2003 09:17 (twenty-two years ago)

xpost: I saw that QI last night. +s=Stephen Fry. -s=everything else. How can such a good idea just go so flat so quick?

Johnney B (Johnney B), Friday, 12 September 2003 09:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Was Tony Hawks on it? That usually kills these things stone dead. Saying that, I didn't think the idea was much cop in the first place.

Ricardo (RickyT), Friday, 12 September 2003 09:41 (twenty-two years ago)

It did seem like the worst idea for a TV show ever, and it also brought John Sessions back onto TV! Well done all concerned.

"Milligan, Cleese, Everett.... Sessions"

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 12 September 2003 09:43 (twenty-two years ago)

John Sessions? Was Tony Slattery on it as well?

Ricardo (RickyT), Friday, 12 September 2003 09:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Theer was the odd slice of humour (for some reason, I cracked up at the anteater/pencil bit) but for some reason, it all went a bit wrong somewhere. Maybe it would of been better on radio, I dunno. But no Tony Hawks (ain't he the skater dude?)

Johnney B (Johnney B), Friday, 12 September 2003 09:48 (twenty-two years ago)

today i'm using the interweb to listen to johnny cash. i'll track down just a minute next week though, thanks for the tip.

angela (angela), Friday, 12 September 2003 09:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Dead men can't sue, huh?

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 12 September 2003 09:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm pretty sure they're all archived at the Radio 4 website, are they not?

Johnney B (Johnney B), Friday, 12 September 2003 10:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, QI was all right. Alan Davies may well have been drunk (particularly for episode 2, which was shown on BBC4 straight after) and I could have done with less of him and more of Laurie. Baker I get sufficient doses of in the morning (great, but I find the David Kwo [who works in my building!] interludes really difficult to, er, lie through now). Rich Hall I like for reasons which escape me.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Friday, 12 September 2003 10:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I feel like one of the few Rich Hall apologists as well... it has the potential to be a non-rubbish series, because they've got probably the best anchor for a panel show possible. They just need... less rubbish guests.

Tony Slattery is currently starring in Blackball. Alongside Mark Little.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 12 September 2003 10:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Dead men can't sue, huh?

no. i'm only listening to stuff that's up there legitimately. eg, hurt on mp3.com. so you can take that back.

when i get home i'll listen to albums i've bought. i believe in copyright and paying people for the art they produce. (i'm a librarian dammit).

angela (angela), Friday, 12 September 2003 10:07 (twenty-two years ago)

rich hall is like denis leary, except with the grace to be a bit embarrassed about being bad mannered in such a forced way: i think he HAS become less irritating since he cut back on his totally unconvincing wildman-of-rage shtick, and relaxed into being a quite nice person who doesn't seem to know very much about anything — it's actually his "i have no idea what's going on, where am i" sensibility which flies

i am old enough to remember FACE THE MUSIC on TV, which out-smugs anything mentioned by a country mile

mark s (mark s), Friday, 12 September 2003 10:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Rich Hall. His persona these days seems to be based on Chris Lloyd as Reverend Jim Ignatowski in 'Taxi'.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Friday, 12 September 2003 10:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sorry - I didn't know there was a big hate campaign AGAINST rich hall.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Friday, 12 September 2003 10:25 (twenty-two years ago)

i think he was on UK TV too much a few years back as an easily available substitute for the hicks-leary mob, which SO didn't suit him - so there's a residual annoyance factor, but i think he trumps it pretty easily these days

mark s (mark s), Friday, 12 September 2003 10:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I take it back.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 12 September 2003 10:36 (twenty-two years ago)

JAM is the only time that Graham Norton is good, or funny. (I have never seen his stnad up tho). but on juyst a minute he is pretty funny. the middle class smugness could be extended to any radio 4 quiz couldnt it? some of those are awful. the news quiz, the book one, the music one, they just find any excuse to fill up the schedule with that dross. if just a minute is on then with paul merton, graham norton and clement freud its probably going to be ok. destroy: tony hawks. linda smith is a bit of a waste of time too. sometimes she's alright i guess.

ambrose (ambrose), Friday, 12 September 2003 13:10 (twenty-two years ago)

five months pass...
When I was a kid Kenneth Williams used to be a regular on Just A Minute. He was brilliant.

Jonathan Z. (Joanthan Z.), Thursday, 12 February 2004 11:15 (twenty-one years ago)

seven months pass...
I just accidentally discovered this when trying to find some audio clips of Stanley Unwin.
It's really quite entertaining! Surprisingly so, as the concept doesn't sound like it'd be much fun... This Kenneth Williams chap brings to mind those wretched Austin Powers movies.
Now I'm downloading random episodes, Hopefully I won't get sick of it TOO quickly!
To think, I probably haven't listened to a radio program since the 80s.

Øystein H-O (Øystein H-O), Monday, 13 September 2004 13:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, and listen to Radio 7. They do classic old-skool Just a Minute episodes. The one last week had Derek Nimo, Clement Freud, Kenneth Williams and Bob Monkhouse, surely a line-up to beat them all.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Monday, 13 September 2004 13:28 (twenty-one years ago)
