Dave M. (rotten03), Friday, 12 September 2003 09:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh man. That sucks.

Ricardo (RickyT), Friday, 12 September 2003 09:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh no, that's terrible news. I know he's been ill, but that's still a big shock. RIP.

James Ball (James Ball), Friday, 12 September 2003 09:07 (twenty-two years ago)

This is awful, I just heard myself. I don't know what to say.

angela (angela), Friday, 12 September 2003 09:07 (twenty-two years ago)

This is terrible :(

Google news isn't showing anything up - says he was released from hospital yesterday. Can't get onto the official site, everything is very slow.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 12 September 2003 09:08 (twenty-two years ago)

cnn.com breaking news

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 12 September 2003 09:08 (twenty-two years ago)

It's on BBC as well now. Absolutely tragic, but at the same time not unexpected.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 12 September 2003 09:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, it seemed like he'd go as soon as June passed on... this is sad sad news. RIP Johnny.

Sorry, here it is

Dave M. (rotten03), Friday, 12 September 2003 09:14 (twenty-two years ago)

and i thought the "john ritter dies" headline was shocking a half-hour ago...

damn

he really should have gotten that mtv award, it would have made a nice unknowing public recognition/tribute/goodbye...sad

Vic (Vic), Friday, 12 September 2003 09:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I was spinning him last night. Gone but never forgotten.

Alex K (Alex K), Friday, 12 September 2003 09:20 (twenty-two years ago)

:-O

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 12 September 2003 09:20 (twenty-two years ago)

RIP. I can't think of anything to say.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 12 September 2003 09:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, God, what rotten news. I was just checking to see if there was a John Ritter thread and I got this instead. Vic, why are we up? I'm going back to bed, this is bumming me out.

Arthur (Arthur), Friday, 12 September 2003 09:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Ending that last album with 'We'll Meet Again' is so, so poignant right now.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 12 September 2003 09:26 (twenty-two years ago)

This is beyond sad. And like everyone else, I can't even think of anything to say.

Nicolars (Nicole), Friday, 12 September 2003 09:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Arthur: I'm actually still finishing my dinner, but none of this does any wonders for one's appetite... [and nice seeing you on here again, despite the morbid reason; you better post on that FAP thread when u have time, you're coming no matter what]

cnn just showing a clip, talking about how he still won another grammy even this year.

Vic (Vic), Friday, 12 September 2003 09:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw him with my mom maybe six years ago, before he stopped touring. It was a great experience made better by sharing it with the woman who introduced me to a lot of great music. June was there too, of course. It was stunning. He was an absolute titan.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 12 September 2003 09:32 (twenty-two years ago)

they're mentioning how he may have died of a broken heart, due to June's recent death

Vic (Vic), Friday, 12 September 2003 09:44 (twenty-two years ago)

His version of "Solitary Man" is probably the thing I've listened to most these past few months.

71 is far too young.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Friday, 12 September 2003 09:45 (twenty-two years ago)

:( RIP Johnny, I'll be listening to his music as long as i live.

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Friday, 12 September 2003 09:47 (twenty-two years ago)

this is very sad. not to try and ram poignancy down anyone's throat, but last night i watched the "hurt" video 3 times in a row.

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Friday, 12 September 2003 10:07 (twenty-two years ago)

man, that video was some moving shit.

Nathan W (Nathan Webb), Friday, 12 September 2003 10:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Far far too young.

Ed (dali), Friday, 12 September 2003 10:36 (twenty-two years ago)

No more seconds to go.

I'd only just rediscovered him as well - I was listening to the Folsom Prison album last week. Thats harsh as.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Friday, 12 September 2003 10:48 (twenty-two years ago)

RIP.

RJG (RJG), Friday, 12 September 2003 10:57 (twenty-two years ago)

OMG.

Johnny Cash is/was the only country artist I could actually get into. His music was so dark and gritty that even though it was country, I really liked it.

OMG.

I suppose he's reunited with his wife now, forever & ever, amen.

OMG. *jaw drops*

p.s.:  What the hell's going on with this year & death in general, man?

Just Deanna (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 12 September 2003 10:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been dithering for weeks over buying one of his albums (or maybe two) not sure why as the songs I know I love (esp. Jackson). I think I'll go and get some this weekend.

chris (chris), Friday, 12 September 2003 11:01 (twenty-two years ago)

There have been some great reissues in the last year or so, Chris...try live at MSG or Silver.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 12 September 2003 11:10 (twenty-two years ago)

RIP

Lynskey (Lynskey), Friday, 12 September 2003 11:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Seeing this thread title felt like a punch in the stomach, and I know I made some involuntary sound because some colleagues looked round. I loved Johnny Cash. I guess he was past 70 and had been ill, and I'm sure that June's death took with it a lot of his will to live, but it still feels like a big shock. I love his music so much and wish I happened to have some with me to play right now, but I'm at work and I don't. As soon as I get home...

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 12 September 2003 11:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I suppose that this was expected in the end makes it a bit easier to take. It's different from other artists dying because when their careers are over you no longer know them as the artist, but with Johnny, we knew who he was now, quite intimately so present was the image of (his) death in it. And that makes it wrench slightly more, that Johnny's fight is ultimately lost, that the survivor is dead. It is a testament to what a man he was that he can die at such a great age and still hit you with a sense of your own mortality.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 12 September 2003 11:37 (twenty-two years ago)

FUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCK!!!

FUCK!

:(

Texas, Biyatch! (thatgirl), Friday, 12 September 2003 12:03 (twenty-two years ago)

*eyes water*

I knew it wouldn't be long after June went, but it's still a shock. He was a living legend and he will be missed.

Dale the Titled (cprek), Friday, 12 September 2003 12:15 (twenty-two years ago)

this is awful.

RIP Johnny, we love you.

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Friday, 12 September 2003 12:23 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry my post should read so present was the image of (his) death in his music.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 12 September 2003 12:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Ronan - that was a great post... exactly what I was feeling but unable to put my finger on WHY I was feeling it.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 12 September 2003 12:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Would it have been such a punch without the fantastic video for "Hurt"? Yes, yes it would. But we wouldn't have something we could simply point at and say "This. This is why it's wrong".

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 12 September 2003 12:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Ending that last album with 'We'll Meet Again' is so, so poignant right now.

Exactly what I was thinking.

If the Man in Black can die, none of us have any hopes of immortality. With all the shit he went through it's amazing to realize how long he had flipped the Grim Reaper the bird. As some local radio preacherman said, the kinda stuff he's been through "would've pulled a lesser man down long ago".

So where's the fighting-back-tears-long-enough-to-drop-your-son-off-at-school-so-he-doesn't-see-you-break emoticon?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 12 September 2003 12:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Hurt was just played on the radio. Quite fitting I think.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 12 September 2003 12:54 (twenty-two years ago)

So so sad. Forget being a great musician, he was a great human being.

oops (Oops), Friday, 12 September 2003 12:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't realise so many posters I knew loved Cash. I'm not up on his stuff at all but 'Hurt' was already giving me a bit of a throat-lump before today.

stevem (blueski), Friday, 12 September 2003 13:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I wonder what's going down at the Carter Family Fold this Saturday. It sure as hell won't be a hoe-down.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 12 September 2003 13:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I brought my columbia/legacy box with me to work. i'm gunna listen to it all day.

unfortunately, i don't have a radio show tonight to do, else i'd devote it to him.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Friday, 12 September 2003 13:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't realize that June had died!

Ah well. I don't really have anything further to add, but this is sad news.

Chris P (Chris P), Friday, 12 September 2003 13:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it me or did Johnny Cash, in his later years, look like an old version of Sylvester McCoy.

Pete (Pete), Friday, 12 September 2003 13:57 (twenty-two years ago)

BTW I've never heard any of his American recordings. I just didn't like the idea of it. . .

I guess it's good if it's gotten so many people into Johnny. Maybe I should check them out. Hmm. I just prefer to keep him immortal Sun-style in my mind.

Pete (Pete), Friday, 12 September 2003 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

He just looked/sounded so old lately! *sniff* I was in denial .. .

Texas, Biyatch! (thatgirl), Friday, 12 September 2003 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Soiunding immortal when he was young is a fine thing, but many have done it (though maybe not many so well). Sounding so heroically mortal when he's older is really astonishing.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 12 September 2003 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

There's not many in this world who did what they loved right up until the end when it just couldn't be done anymore. Even less who could still surprise you with the simplest of touches. Oddly, maybe, though I'm moved, I'm not really sad or crushed -- a full life, a deep love, the knowledge that you have affected more people than you could ever imagine or count, that's a hell of a legacy, one that reminds me of Charles Schulz's. Let him rest well -- his place and all that comes from it is secure.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 12 September 2003 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Hear hear, Ned. Well said.

Saskia, Friday, 12 September 2003 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Sad, I'm sad. When June passed I knew it was only a matter of time, but... :(

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 12 September 2003 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

also RIP of course

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 12 September 2003 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

In death, as in life, a legend. RIP.

David. (Cozen), Friday, 12 September 2003 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Farewell, Man in Black.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 12 September 2003 16:11 (twenty-two years ago)

my friend Matt left a long, nice memorial on Friendster's bulletin board. Here's the tail end b/c I thought it was nice:

I Hope you're in June's arms, surrounded by all of
your family, Johnny.

Today, we lost a beautiful artist and man. I have
read that his mother called his voice 'the gift.'
Mr. Cash was kind enough to share this wondrous
gift with us and his honesty about his life and
this world through his many songs and albums.
Johnny has been a friend to many of us in our
days. One whom we can drink with in the dark and
turn around and toast to in the highs of our
lives. We can and will continue to do so as long
as the stylus never goes dull and the records
don't stop
spinning. I ask those of you who go for a drink
this weekend(and I know most of you will) that you
raise a glass to this extraordinary person. If you
don't share the sentiment I do for Mr. Cash upon
reading this, then maybe its long past time
to become reacquainted with him and his music. God
bless you, John R. Cash.

PostScript:

As I write this, I realize when I first turned the
volume up on my speakers this morning, Johnny was,
eerily enough, singing Wayfaring Stranger:

"I am a poor wayfaring stranger
Traveling through this world of woe
Yet there's no sickness, no toil or danger
In that bright world to which I go

I'm going there to see my father
And all my loved ones who've gone on
I'm just going over to Jordan
I'm just going over home

I know dark clouds will gather around me
I know my way is rough and steep
Yet beauteous fields arise just before me
Where God's redeemed their vigils keep

I'm going there to see my mother
She said she'd meet me when I come
I'm just going over to Jordan
I'm just going over home"

Johnny, may you wear white for eternity, wherever
you are now. And thank you.

Texas, Biyatch! (thatgirl), Friday, 12 September 2003 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

My first hero; I wrote him fan letters when I was five and to the postman's chagrin, drew on the postage stamps myself. Johnny Cash Sun sessiojs were the first records I ever bought/had bought/picked out.

My mom got up at 5am this morning because she was coughing and flipped on the TV. Seconds later, she was calling for me to get up and see the bad news. Tonight I'm going out with my friends (plastic constellations at 1st Ave) and we'll salut him until we fall over.

Rest in peace, Man in Black.

Why me Lord?
What have I ever done to deserve even one
Of the blessings I've known?

Why me Lord?
What did I ever do that was worth love from you
And the kindness you've shown?

i miss him so much...been crying all day...esp. when my brother put on the hurt video by johnny cash on the computer...

Caitlin O'Neil (kurdtkobain205), Saturday, 13 September 2003 03:47 (twenty-two years ago)

& you know what else sucked a big gang of dicks, i spent today riding a bus & the radio stn. the bus driver had on, the only fuckin johnny cash song they seemed to have was "boy named sue". enough already! you fucks. they played a whole crapload of U2 songs too, i hope that wasn't some sick "tribute" to him or something but i couldnt hear properly. (why would it be? oh i don't know man, it's a sick world we got these days tho).

i was listening to jc in the bath this am & i was thinking gee i hope when june died lots of his fans writ him letters saying hang in there bro & thanks for all the music & etc etc....then later i saw my buddy rich & he told me johnny was dead...oh man now it's too late! i really wouldve written a letter like that i think even tho it was kind of late.

RIP anyway....1 of my favourites ever.

I just realized that Jerry Lee Lewis is the only one of those original Sun Rockers (who hit it bigtime) left. Who'da thunk he'd be the last one standing? Other than him, of course.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 15 September 2003 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Last night at the every-Sunday-night-free-bluegrass-show at this one bar here in Lexington they played SO MANY Johnny Cash songs and I saw all these people like drunkenly singing along and smiling and laughing but many of them had tears in their eyes...it was perfect.

JOHNNY CASH – THE OFFICIAL CONCERT EXPERIENCE brings songs and stories from the “Man in Black” to the stage in a way that audiences haven’t seen or heard before. With video of Johnny from episodes of The Johnny Cash TV Show projected on a screen above the stage, a live band and singers will accompany him in perfect sync. This concert experience will showcase iconic performances from the TV show and highlight the spirit of the legend by revisiting some of his memorable words and anecdotes. Cash will perform some of his biggest hits, including “Folsom Prison Blues,” “Ring of Fire,” and “I Walk the Line,” and share stories of people he met along the way whose causes he championed – the working man from all walks of life. Plus, onstage male and female singers will split vocal duties performing their own takes on Cash hits. The music never stops in this concert event!

Funny, I just started diving into Johnny Cash's '60s albums this past weekend. I hadn't given his stuff a good listen in maybe a year or two, so I thought I'd check out some of those albums that aficionados swear by. He definitely cut some great ones that were unfairly overshadowed by his Rick Rubin albums (which to be fair, are actually good, particularly the first and third which are great albums in my book).
