Warwick, the usually quite classy bass company, has a new line that definitely are modeled on the insect world.
I don't know who exactly BC Rich is...but I think much of the blame can be laid upon him.

Four necks. Two sound holes. 42 strings. Two access doors; one on the upper player's side and one at the tail block.
Created by luthier Linda Manzer for guitarist Pat Metheny, the instrument took 2 years to build (approximately 1000 hours), and when the 42 strings are strung up to high tension, the Pikasso is under approximately 1000 lbs pressure. It weighs 6.7 kg or 14 3/4 lbs. http://www.oddmusic.com/gallery/pikasso1a.jpg

Here's the full picture. This is probably the only occassion when I don't feel like a tool in saying that it looks like a guitar that dropped acid.
― kingkongvsgodzilla, Friday, 21 March 2008 11:52 (seventeen years ago)
I'm intrigued, I presume it is going to get lots of sitar like resonations.
― Ed, Friday, 21 March 2008 11:59 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah, there are videos on youtube, but at the moment I can only listen over crappy laptop speakers so I can't hear the subtleties. It's probably time for a trip to the library - there are always Pat Metheny CD's at the library right?
― kingkongvsgodzilla, Friday, 21 March 2008 12:07 (seventeen years ago)
Truly ridiculous

― elmo argonaut, Friday, 21 March 2008 13:35 (seventeen years ago)
There's an 8 foot wide Boss pedal tuner for it.
― Jarlrmai, Friday, 21 March 2008 14:03 (seventeen years ago)
What's even the point of building such a monstrous thing? Couldn't he just, you know, switch between different guitars?
― Tuomas, Friday, 21 March 2008 16:10 (seventeen years ago)
It's so he can grate cheese, slice eggs, make chips, and serenade the senoritas all at the same time.
― snoball, Friday, 21 March 2008 16:12 (seventeen years ago)
How would switching between guitars replace this? Look carefully at the pictures, Tuomas -- the point is that he can use his right hand to touch the extra unfretted strings while he's using the conventional guitar part. It's essentially a guitar with a harp conveniently built in.

There's an 8 foot wide Boss pedal tuner for it. lol looks fun in its craziness tho
― rrrobyn, Friday, 21 March 2008 16:38 (seventeen years ago)
I'm guessing it has some kind of droning, sitar-like...oh right, what Ed said.
― RabiesAngentleman, Friday, 21 March 2008 16:56 (seventeen years ago)
There are what might be bass strings across the back end of the body.
― nickalicious, Friday, 21 March 2008 17:04 (seventeen years ago)
There are a few videos on YouTube -- it sounds more harpy than sitary.

Metheny needs to team up with Terry Bozzio

are female luthiers a common occurrence? seems like a very male line of work.

Clips of Pat Metheny playig that pikasso thing on youtube sound really nice! It's smaller than I thought it would be as well.
― Pashmina, Saturday, 22 March 2008 15:35 (seventeen years ago)
Well, OK, it sounds nice when he's noodling in a new-agey manner, when he's laying it down, it sounds like a right bloody racket.
