I mean, the FUCK is this? A Romulan warship?

Kingfish (Kingfish), Friday, 12 September 2003 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

But if they didn't keep making those, what would Blackie Lawless play?

Bryan (Bryan), Friday, 12 September 2003 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 12 September 2003 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Then yes, break the fucker's hands, and do his feet while your at it just in case he should get any funny ideas about building one with his toes.

Bryan (Bryan), Friday, 12 September 2003 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Now I would actually love to play one of these big obtuse fuckers:

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 12 September 2003 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Plus, this one is undeniably unfuckwithable:

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 12 September 2003 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't play guitar, but that didn't stop me from having a screaming orgasm at the sight of the guntar.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 12 September 2003 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I feel the same way abt these funny-shaped guitars as abt the funny shaped hot air balloons, ie OK so you've PROVED you can make something in unconventional shapes and it'll still work, now just STOP.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 12 September 2003 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I had a similar reaction.

David. (Cozen), Friday, 12 September 2003 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Where is the cover to Ted Nugent's "Weekend Warriors" when you need it most?

Warwick, the usually quite classy bass company, has a new line that definitely are modeled on the insect world.

I don't know who exactly BC Rich is...but I think much of the blame can be laid upon him.

earlnash, Friday, 12 September 2003 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I've always wanted a BC Rich BICH or Warlock.

Bryan (Bryan), Friday, 12 September 2003 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan - what were you searching? A .pdf of your work's newsletter?

David. (Cozen), Friday, 12 September 2003 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

If the guntar isn't capable of the rock, NOTHING is.

However, Ed Roman is forgiven for all sins unto the guitar world by being the guy who built Prince's guitar.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 12 September 2003 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

That one weird 10 string that BC Rich makes is an interesting idea, but their guitars look total trailerpark/tool and die band.

RJG (RJG), Friday, 12 September 2003 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

What is that, a Packenbacher?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 12 September 2003 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

It's fucking excellent, that's what it is.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 12 September 2003 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

nope. it doesn't have that patented "PAC-O-SOUND" feature.

must mean that it's only a Pac 330, then.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Friday, 12 September 2003 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

But is it pre-CBS?

NA (Nick A.), Friday, 12 September 2003 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Check out these (South African):

(They actually get hella cool tone, truthfully, but UUUUGH.)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 12 September 2003 17:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh come on, those afri-can guitars look great!

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 12 September 2003 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

The BC Rich Mockingird is the greatest bass I've ever played, and I think the original ones were beautiful. Actually, earlnash is pretty much right on, I think -- their late seventies/early eighties designs are amazingly influential, for better or for worse...

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Friday, 12 September 2003 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Kingfish, no offense but "Romulan warship"? pot, kettle etc ;}

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Friday, 12 September 2003 18:52 (twenty-two years ago)

oh FINE then, Romulan WarBIRD

Kingfish (Kingfish), Friday, 12 September 2003 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

haha!

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Friday, 12 September 2003 19:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Ed Roman did NOT make Prince's guitars; Jerry Auerswald did (http://www.auerswald-instruments.com/). Ed Roman is a -- well, I've met the guy and toured his shop, and I don't know what he is.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Friday, 12 September 2003 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha! Thanks Colin.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 12 September 2003 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Fucking Steinbergs. They always make me think of Aswad.

Matt (Matt), Friday, 12 September 2003 20:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Mmmm Steinberg wine mmmm.

David. (Cozen), Friday, 12 September 2003 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

These are generally horrible, but I always like this one:

RabiesAngentleman, Friday, 21 March 2008 09:59 (seventeen years ago)

Four necks. Two sound holes. 42 strings. Two access doors; one on the upper player's side and one at the tail block.

Created by luthier Linda Manzer for guitarist Pat Metheny, the instrument took 2 years to build (approximately 1000 hours), and when the 42 strings are strung up to high tension, the Pikasso is under approximately 1000 lbs pressure. It weighs 6.7 kg or 14 3/4 lbs.

Here's the full picture. This is probably the only occassion when I don't feel like a tool in saying that it looks like a guitar that dropped acid.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Friday, 21 March 2008 11:52 (seventeen years ago)

I'm intrigued, I presume it is going to get lots of sitar like resonations.

Ed, Friday, 21 March 2008 11:59 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, there are videos on youtube, but at the moment I can only listen over crappy laptop speakers so I can't hear the subtleties. It's probably time for a trip to the library - there are always Pat Metheny CD's at the library right?

kingkongvsgodzilla, Friday, 21 March 2008 12:07 (seventeen years ago)

Truly ridiculous

calstars, Friday, 21 March 2008 13:01 (seventeen years ago)

that thing must be a bitch to keep in tune

elmo argonaut, Friday, 21 March 2008 13:35 (seventeen years ago)

There's an 8 foot wide Boss pedal tuner for it.

Jarlrmai, Friday, 21 March 2008 14:03 (seventeen years ago)

What's even the point of building such a monstrous thing? Couldn't he just, you know, switch between different guitars?

Tuomas, Friday, 21 March 2008 16:10 (seventeen years ago)

It's so he can grate cheese, slice eggs, make chips, and serenade the senoritas all at the same time.

snoball, Friday, 21 March 2008 16:12 (seventeen years ago)

How would switching between guitars replace this? Look carefully at the pictures, Tuomas -- the point is that he can use his right hand to touch the extra unfretted strings while he's using the conventional guitar part. It's essentially a guitar with a harp conveniently built in.

nabisco, Friday, 21 March 2008 16:30 (seventeen years ago)

There's an 8 foot wide Boss pedal tuner for it.
lol
looks fun in its craziness tho

rrrobyn, Friday, 21 March 2008 16:38 (seventeen years ago)

I'm guessing it has some kind of droning, sitar-like...oh right, what Ed said.

RabiesAngentleman, Friday, 21 March 2008 16:56 (seventeen years ago)

There are what might be bass strings across the back end of the body.

nickalicious, Friday, 21 March 2008 17:04 (seventeen years ago)

There are a few videos on YouTube -- it sounds more harpy than sitary.

nabisco, Friday, 21 March 2008 17:48 (seventeen years ago)

Metheny needs to team up with Terry Bozzio

are female luthiers a common occurrence? seems like a very male line of work.

get bent, Friday, 21 March 2008 18:08 (seventeen years ago)

There are a few videos on YouTube -- it sounds more harpy than sitary

it sounds almost *exactly* like a hammer dulcimer or zither to me

moonship journey to baja, Friday, 21 March 2008 18:26 (seventeen years ago)

^^ yes yes

nabisco, Friday, 21 March 2008 19:37 (seventeen years ago)

dave 2¼, Saturday, 22 March 2008 15:19 (seventeen years ago)

Clips of Pat Metheny playig that pikasso thing on youtube sound really nice! It's smaller than I thought it would be as well.

Pashmina, Saturday, 22 March 2008 15:35 (seventeen years ago)

Well, OK, it sounds nice when he's noodling in a new-agey manner, when he's laying it down, it sounds like a right bloody racket.
