Start by getting a collection of his Sun recordings.

I love his version of "Sixteen Tons," but it's only available on a couple of older Greatest Hits comps and a "Great Classic Country" comp that my grandfather ordered from TimeLife (that I've seen).

The standards - "Ring of Fire," "I Walk The Line," "Folsom Prison Blues," "Girl From The North Country" (w/ Bob Dylan), "A Boy Named Sue," "Man In Black."

He does a strong Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down, one of my favourite country songs:
I woke up Sunday mornin' with no way to hold my head that didn't hurt
And the beer I had for breakfast wasn't bad, so I had one more for dessert...

The best place to start is the first 'American Recordings,' from '93 I think. It's just him and his guitar - no overproduction, no flourishes - just a fine set of songs about murder, love, Jesus, Vietnam, and trains. You can't go wrong.

Seconding "A Boy Named Sue".There's some famous footage of the man performing it live somewhere -- maybe the Grand Ol' Opry, I dunno -- and he's stomping out the stage lights as he does so like the bad motherfucker he so truly was. Bless'im.

heard an astonishing song on bbc 6 this a.m. while they were in big time tribute mode : 'when the man comes around' off a recent 90's album. it was ace though, as radios 2, 6 and xfm all had tracks on the go today and the nme has a decent tribute. you dont get that all-across-the-board coverage with yer dead pop stars.

best way to hear him
is on the live prison discs
folsom, san quentin

don't start in 90s,
start with his concept albums
back in the 60s

1969:
5 percent of US sales
were johnny cash discs*

*true!

Laura Cantrell did a wonderful, reverential tribute on the Radio Thriftshop that spanned his best material over several decades. Listen (RealAudio link).

In the early 60's I had one of his L.P's and on it was the Rock Island Line... Country Boy. Sorry can't think of more. In the early seventies he had a very nice song ... Sunday Morning Coming Down.

I love this:

Johnny is really in his element singing a train song, and "Casey Jones" is a classic

I love the part when Johnny gets so into character yelling "Jump Sam, jump!"
