prompted by the realisation that the last British film I saw that I thought was good was Sexy Beast. I've heard good about Morvern Callar though. What do you consider to be a good if not great British film from the last six years - you can include The Full Monty if you wish.

28 Days Later appears to be a real love it/loathe it film (like the Guy Ritchie films perhaps), i've yet to see it

I would mention "Christie Malry's Own Double Entry" here, only that I still haven't seen it, so I don't actually know if it's as good as it sounds (repressed young man extracts revenge against society in increasingly severe ways, culminating in killing millions of Londoners by posioning a reservoir). I probably would have if it had actually got a proper release. I think it's on DVD now, so I'll have to get it - I do seem to remember a lot of people saying it's nowhere near as good as the book, tho...

Chriddof (Chriddof), Saturday, 13 September 2003 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

i saw the first 20 minutes of '...Double Entry' at Glastonbury 2002, it didn't seem very good but i was kind of compelled all the same.

HARRY POTTER you fuddyduddies

That double entry thing isn't a porno, then?

"I do seem to remember a lot of people saying it's nowhere near as good as the book, tho..."

this film was a horrifying let down after i'd read the book and been listening to the Luke Haines soundtrack for a while.. the director inserted this utterly bizarre and completely pointless travel-back-in-time sub-plot and Moran unforgiveably plays Malry as a retard because he doesn't have the depth as an actor to play the character has he is in the book - intelligent but misguided, single-minded but with muddled motives.

They should have let Haines direct. and script. and star.

dirty pretty things, which I saw last night and was excellent.

morvern callar is one of my favorite films ever.

felicia's journey is neither British nor very good (Egoyan is Canadian. I guess it might have been filmed in the UK but does that make is a British film?)

Is About a Boy British? US directors, english cast.

Now this is an British film (well, British and partially German) that I'd like to see:

I rented '...Double Entry' recently (it's pretty good!) but the disc was faulty so I took it back to the shop. The teenager ned who works there took one look at the title and boggled at the thought that his shop were stocking such stuff. He told me I was entitled to a free rental because of the faulty disc, so I took out 'The 400 Blows' - which merely confirmed my pervdom, judging by his expression.

'Twin Town' = classic

(is 'Essex Boys' any good? I love cheap, nasty shit-ass exploitation flicks btw)

Morvern Callar is rubbish! We had a thread. The most disappointing follow-up to a GREAT debut ever. (That last sentence may be untrue.) Now, Ratcatcher, mmmmm.

dirty pretty things is pretty good

(i wz a bit disappointed when i watched first on video - but its feel has really stayed with me)

I thought 28 Days Later was just okay, which blows the love it/hate it idea. Great first half. Second half goes apeshit and incoherent in its attempt to make a not particularly illuminating point about human nature. Terrific soundtrack, though.

A Room For Romeo Brass

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 15 September 2003 19:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and Mrs Brown which I loved, even though it probably doesn't get much love anywhere else.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 15 September 2003 19:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Croupier was excellent.

Can I take this opportunity to say that I do not understand what the British see in Guy Ritchie films (well, Lock Stock in particular). There seems to be a some kind of cultural delay whereby the English were still enamoured with Tarantinoisms long after that was exhausted over here by oversaturation, and were really happy to have their own hack director take a stab at it. Admittedly I only saw the director's cut of this film on DVD while really jetlagged, but I thought it was one of the most boring films I'd ever seen at the time.

I really loved Wonderland - lots of lovely DV footage of London, Gina McKee and a great score by Michael Nyman.

Looking forawrd to Michael Winterbootoms new sci-fi film. Only his eighth film in five years...

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 09:34 (twenty-two years ago)

six years pass...

Has anyone else seen Dean Spanley (2008)? A very entertaining little oddity starring Peter O'Toole, Sam Neill and Bryan Brown, set in Edwardian England, about a man who regresses to his past life as a dog. I'd recommend it, it's charming and unique.
