outside of ILX. could be anyone, must be a real person tho - preferably living (otherwise some wiseguy will say Jesus)...reasons why also nice

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 21:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Bam Margera. Because after I got him drunk I could molest him in a bathroom stall.

A Girl Named Sam (thatgirl), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 21:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Cool thread topic!

1) David Lynch, because I'd probably start out trying to get him to talk about Twin Peaks and then he'd derail the thread a million different ways;

2) Mark Frost (co-creator of Twin Peaks with Lynch), to counter #1 with straight answers;

3) David Bowie, cause shit, give me a few drinks and I'd be all, "So yeah! Hey! I wrote a novel about you. And a short story, too! You don't mind that I ripped off a lot of your stuff, right? Anyway, that shirt you wore on the Outside tour, can I have it?";

4) Peter O'Toole, because Jesus hell shit cock damn, he's Peter O'Toole, and how many people can say that?;

5) Bill Clinton, cause I'll bet he's just plain fun;

6) Haruki Murakami, just because;

7) Jonathan Carroll, who is one of the few living writers coming to mind who I'd actually want to talk about writing with -- with me talking as a writer, I mean, not a reader (and no, I don't write anything like Carroll, I just think it would be a good conversation);

8) Ann-Margret -- see Peter O'Toole;

9) Douglas Hofstadter, and I think I'd just toss a word out now and then and let him ramble;

10) John Dominic Crossan, to talk about theology and early Christianity, and in particular parabolic interpretation.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 21:27 (twenty-two years ago)

This is great Tep:

and then he'd derail the thread a million different ways;

heheh

A Girl Named Sam (thatgirl), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 21:28 (twenty-two years ago)

10. my friend Bill who I haven't seen since leaving college.
9. likewise, Chris Z.
8. Leroy Sibbles--to tell more all the stories about Studio One and to bask in his musical genius.
7. that one guy I shared one with in Tempe--New Zealander who had been travelling constantly for 20 years or so
6. Scientist aka Hopeton Brown--get him to give me some blueprints for amps and other studio gear.
5. Bernard Purdie--maybe if I get him drunk enough, he'll decide to give me drum lessons pro bono
4. Dave Chapelle--cuz he's a funny mofo
3. Willie Nelson--cuz he's a cool mofo, and after we have our pint we could, y'know, smoke some grass
2. Meredith--haven't seen her in over a year
1. My mom--cause she never drinks and it would be beyond bizarre

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 21:43 (twenty-two years ago)

1: Eddie Izzard - he cracks me the fuck up;

2: My brother - I dig drinking with him;

3: Stephen King - I really want access to that brain for a little while;

4: Tim Burton - cause hey, Tim Burton;

5: Maya Angelou - she fascinates me, and I want her to tell me all her stories;

6: Tommy Lee Jones. My reasons are my own;

7: I'd have picked Katherine Hepburn until recently, cause hey, Katherine Hepburn! But now, I guess I'll switch to Liz Taylor. I'd get her drunk and then I'd make off with her diamonds;

8: Angelyne - I want to see how old she really is;

9: Nelson Mandela - just to say hey dude, you rock; and

10: Johnny Depp - if you think I'm not slipping roofies into his beer and having my way with him for the next two weeks straight, y'all don't know me very well.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

1. Jaz Coleman -- and if you have to ask why, see ILM.

2. Eddie Izzard -- Just `cos I think he'd be hilarious.

3. Sean Connery -- because I'd invariably be in complete stitches the entire time, and he is pretty indisputably the coolest gent on the planet.

4. Martin Scorcese -- Another cool cat with lots to talk about, and I'm sure I could drunkenly convince him to finally release "After Hours" on DVD.

5. Jim Jarmusch -- Another contender for coolest guy on the planet. I'm sure he'd be enlightening and entertaining.

6. Lemmy Kilmister -- Why do I need a reason?

7. Dr.Ayman Al Zawahiri -- Get him ploughed, then get him to `fess up the whereabouts of where he and OBL have been hidin'.

8. Andy Merrill -- the voice and mind behind "Brak" on Cartoon Network. Nothing brightens my day more.

9. Jim Caroll -- NYC legend/poet/proto-punk/all around cool cat.

10. Daljit Dahliwahl -- Gorgeous former ITN News presenter, just because she's quite striking, intelligent and of the highly unlikely possibility of convincing her to ___________________.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 21:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow! Luna cited Izzard too!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 21:47 (twenty-two years ago)

oops, do you ever go to SF?

scientist moved from jamaica to sf about 5 years ago, he plays at a club called "dub mission" at the elbo room once a month (i think). i've seen him a few times, he's great but i'm not so keen on the toasters he's played with. i'm sure if you go to the club early you could catch a pint with him (it's a pretty small club).

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 22:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I've heard that he lives in SF and does some studio work out there (for rock bands, who I'm guessing don't fully use or appreciate his genius w/r/t electronics). Haven't heard about "dub mission" though--I assume he just spins records??
Sadly, I've never been to SF, but my sister lives there now so I have a place to stay whenever I scrounge up enough money for airfare...maybe even sleep on her couch for a few months while I look for a job.
(Also, Bernard Purdie DOES give lessons, but I could never afford them)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 22:47 (twenty-two years ago)

bu maybe not just for a pint

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 22:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Haven't heard about "dub mission" though--I assume he just spins records??

he's got a pretty weird set up. it's usually a DJ (not him), a toaster, and he's behind this big keyboard/device which looks like it has been "prepared" electronically (lots of homemade cicuit modeling, patches, switches, knobs) all wired into a laptop.

the DJ mix goes into the keyboard/computer then out to the PA. he can adjust the bass/treble and throw ridiculous waves of reverb drenching isolated sounds pretty quickly. i would assume that his software has a pretty neat EQ thing because he's basically doing live dub versions on the fly, without the benefit of a studio.

i haven't heard any of his rock band collaborations, that's too bad if that's true.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 22:56 (twenty-two years ago)

oh this'll do for now

Eddie Izzard - duh...the problem is i could list about 100 other funny fuckers (Peter Kay, Bob Mortimer, Mark & Lard, Dave Gorman etc.) so really this is just 'insert UK comedian bloke here'

Tony Wilson - cos he's a twat

Johnny Depp - morose Anglophiliac, i would impress him just by sitting there clearly

Jarvis Cocker - just to hear his voice

Chris Waddle - so we could do 'Diamond Lights' karaoke together

Trish Keenan - so i can grill her on ridiculously ambitious tours of the States, how cool Mir was and whether she likes being tickled

Bob Carolgees - i love that people like him exist - i want to know how he got into puppetry, could he not hack it as a ventriloquist?

Mike Skinner - so we could write lyrics together that would eventually just infringe on the copyright of one of his older songs

Keira Knightley - any nude scenes coming up in your next films?

Geoff Senior - my favourite comic artist/illustrator in my youth, owe him a drink or 2000 for inspiration and could badger him for hours about his career and output

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 23:05 (twenty-two years ago)

That sounds pretty cool gygax, although if you don't like the toasters I probably wouldn't either (not a big fan of toasting in general)

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

matt groening
peter hook - to tell stories and teach me bass tricks
alan mcgee/tony wilson (for the UK indie owner slot)
ben burtt (sound design/editor for Lucasfilm)
steve purcell(game designer/artist for lucasarts, also created Sam & Max)

Will Self, Paul Hartnoll, Tony Benn, Lee Scratch Perry, Salam Pax, Rachel Weisz, Justin Timberlake, Ross Noble, Margaret Thatcher and the bass player from The Darkness.

All at once.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 18 September 2003 08:38 (twenty-two years ago)

justin timberlake???

blue (blue), Thursday, 18 September 2003 08:41 (twenty-two years ago)

So everyone will be throwing themselves at me to get to Justin, obviously (or the other way round).

Actually, scratch Margaret Thatcher. I have no idea what I was thinking.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 18 September 2003 08:44 (twenty-two years ago)

What am I talking about... THOMAS PYNCHON, obviously.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 18 September 2003 08:46 (twenty-two years ago)

10) Michael Caine - epitome of 60s British cool and star of three of my favourite ever films
9) Dennis Waterman and George Cole, but only as Terry McCann and Arther Daley - coz Minder is my favourite TV series ever and i loved the decor in The Winchester
8) Raymond Carver - my favourite writer, tho he was apparently a bad drunk for a lot of his life so maybe this wouldn't be too pleasant or in his best interests
7) Catherine Deneuve - just so i could say i had, tho I can't imagine her slugging back a pint of Guinness
6) Angelina Jolie - so I could brag to my friends
5) Keith Floyd - coz I reckon it would be fun and he'd end up diving into the kitchen and cooking up great food while shitted
4) Raymond Williams - just a total hero of mine and a genius
3) Joe Pesci - so i could get him to do the "you think i'm funny?" line out of Goodfellas and scare the living shit out of my friends!
2) David Cronenberg - I'd like to do this in my fave restaurant in Toronto
1) Otis Redding - Well, just because, but maybe he'd get drunk and sing, then i'd start blubbing

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 18 September 2003 09:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 19 September 2003 09:07 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, in no particular order…

Dostoevsky – His reprieve from the death penalty, his epilepsy, the time he lived in, I could go on.

Jim Henson – I wanna be able to create things like he did

Bjork – coz she’s mental and would be handy in a fight innit?

Brain Molko – he absolutely fascinates me, I’m not sure if it’s a sexual thing but I could just look at him for hours….

Johnny Depp – I’ve liked him since 21 Jump Street, I want first shot with those ruffies!!!

Aldous Huxley – I wanna get inside his head, how did he know?!

Sandra Gregory – I just read that book and I so wanna meet her now

My fiancé’s ex – I’ve got residual anger, there’s things I need to say that are inappropriate and not my place but I’d so love to get it off my chest!!!!

Robbie Williams – I’m sorry but I swear it’s just coz I wanna know if he’s a larf or if he’s really full of himself or if he’s the tortured soul he makes out.

My Granda coz he was a great bloke and I didn’t really appreciate it enough when he was around, plus I’d love to know what he thinks of what’s

smee (smee), Friday, 19 September 2003 09:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Brain Molko – he absolutely fascinates me, I’m not sure if it’s a sexual thing but I could just look at him for hours….

Ewwwwwwwwwwww.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 19 September 2003 09:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sorry, but I can't help it, he just looks so pretty - and he's a boy!

smee (smee), Friday, 19 September 2003 09:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Just notice the end of post is missing, wierd!

My Granda coz he was a great bloke and I didn’t really appreciate it enough when he was around, plus I’d love to know what he thinks of what’s been going on in my life over the past year or so.

smee (smee), Friday, 19 September 2003 09:23 (twenty-two years ago)

i think i'd like to go for dinks with my grandad again, too. he taught me how to do it in the first place, after all...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Friday, 19 September 2003 09:32 (twenty-two years ago)

ditto gandhi!! we wd have stout and pork scratchings and kick the one-armed bandit!!

mark s (mark s), Friday, 19 September 2003 09:45 (twenty-two years ago)

that is probably the best post ever on ilx

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Friday, 19 September 2003 09:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I did my list at work yesterday, but it's going to see terribly lame after that mark s post. Anyhow, in no particular order:

Lorraine Kelly, because she's a national treasure and always seems so nice but a bit naughty with it.
June Whitfield, ditto, she is also the doyenne of amusing anecdotes.
Terry Wogan and the Radio 2 breakfast team because they make me laugh
Christopher Brookmyre because his books make me laugh, he's from round these parts and he supports my local team so I can laugh at him for how badly they are doing.
Rich Hall because he makes me laugh just looking at him, and then when he starts talking he makes me laugh even more
Stephen Fry, just because
Martin O'Neill, because I like the concept of an educated and intelligent football manager, especially when he manages my team
Pat Nevin, also intelligent footballer. He also has an excellent taste in music, which is rarer than hen's teeth in the world of football (can only think of him and Graeme le Saux off the top of my head who have ever claimed to have decent tastes in music)
Jon Tickle and Fed Martone off Big Brother, because they made BB4 and RI:SE worth watching.
Nicky Wire because he doesn't drink, thereby making the rounds cheaper. Also because he's hugely entertaining and an all round decent chap.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 20 September 2003 07:51 (twenty-two years ago)

You win! That's the first post that has nobody I've ever heard of.

oops (Oops), Saturday, 20 September 2003 08:05 (twenty-two years ago)

you probably know rich hall and stephen fry even if you don't recognize the names

cinniblount (James Blount), Saturday, 20 September 2003 08:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I think I do know rich hall. comedian? sad dog face?

oops (Oops), Saturday, 20 September 2003 08:17 (twenty-two years ago)

cinniblount (James Blount), Saturday, 20 September 2003 08:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Shel Talmy
Umberto Eco
Paul Kantner
Huell Howser (LA/CA TV personality/historian)
Mike Davis
Kim Fowley
Joe Dante
Lee Hazelwood
Anthony Bourdain
Robert Anton Wilson

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Saturday, 20 September 2003 10:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh damn, I should've mentioned Stephen Fry and Anthony Bourdain!

Hm. Drop the Dolores Huerta and my paternal grandfather (I don't really need to know that badly) and add the aforementioned two!

I was going to mention Paul Merton, btw, but then decided I'd probably be too speechless to do anything but stare and that would just not be nice.

Legendary Nothingness (Dee the Lurker), Saturday, 20 September 2003 14:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I would be happy enough with all of Roule records, Jacques, Felix and if there's any space left some of my friends. Think of the music conversation!

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 20 September 2003 14:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Bangalter would just say 'i love you guys'...over and over again...for 15 minutes

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 20 September 2003 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

he would say it loud at first, then progressively quieter and quieter, then really loud again!

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 20 September 2003 14:28 (twenty-two years ago)

and he would have a stutter, but a brilliant one

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 20 September 2003 14:36 (twenty-two years ago)

gw bush, osama bin laden, saddam hussein

duane, Saturday, 20 September 2003 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

oh ten, sorry. thatd be enough for me tho, i don't like crowds

duane, Saturday, 20 September 2003 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

duane's lot would be useless in a pub quiz

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 20 September 2003 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

nah man cause i'd be with em, i know lots of stuff

duane, Saturday, 20 September 2003 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

duane, Saturday, 20 September 2003 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

i dunno, i hear Saddam loves the gee-gees - the infidel tax-cheat Lester Piggot was a favourite

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 20 September 2003 17:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Ailsa, Gaizka Mendieta is the Uber Indie boy/footballer apparently

chris (chris), Sunday, 21 September 2003 09:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, but I've seen Pat Nevin at two Belle and Sebastian gigs, also he is a Celtic fan, therefore we have two things to talk about over our pint. Also Graham le Saux played the Sundays when he had to do a programme for MTV about ten years ago picking his favourite videos, which pissed all over the usual Simply Red / Dire Straits bollocks the rest of them picked, and I've retained a sneaking fondness for him ever since.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 21 September 2003 09:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd like to add the Car Talk guys to my list. They make me laugh. And they could probably tell me what was wrong with my transmission.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 13 June 2005 03:58 (twenty years ago)

i think we've had pints! or at least lone stars...

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 13 June 2005 04:20 (twenty years ago)

either way i am flattered.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 13 June 2005 04:20 (twenty years ago)

Oh, shit, I misspelled "Bruce Graham." And that's a shame, because I want him to Google me. He's alive, and 80 this year, and designed Hancock Center, which I think is probably the most brilliant skyscraper standing anywhere on this sad planet. Sears was his biggest mistake.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 13 June 2005 04:23 (twenty years ago)

i think we've had pints! or at least lone stars...

Yeah, I guess. We didn't have anything like a conversation, though.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 13 June 2005 04:24 (twenty years ago)

i'm not really the outsider i wish i was.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 13 June 2005 04:29 (twenty years ago)

You were busy with some sort of booth for some band I didn't much care for. No offense.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 13 June 2005 04:32 (twenty years ago)

no i know.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 13 June 2005 04:33 (twenty years ago)

Edited for the passage of time:

1: Eddie Izzard
2: My sister
3: Steven Tyler
4: Greg Cremer
5: Pablo Neruda (but for that pesky dead thing)
6: Will Smith
7: Chuck Yeager
8: Brett Butler
9: *wildcard* (I change my mind a lot)
10: Johnny Depp
