Dumb statements of the day

Two goodies. First, the sad one, in which outright Italian fascism makes a hopefully brief comeback:

Italy's prime minister, Silvio Berlusconi, said that western civilization is superior to the Islamic world. Berlusconi urged Europe to "reconstitute itself on the basis of its Christian roots."

Second, the maybe-sadder, maybe-funnier, maybe-sorta-lovable one, from President Bush:

"The folks who conducted to act on our country on September 11th made a big mistake....They underestimated America. They underestimated our resolve, our determination, our love for freedom. They misunderestimated the fact that we love a neighbor in need. They misunderestimated the compassion of our country. I think they misunderestimated the will and determination of the commander in chief, too."

This is like at the end of the action movie, when the wacky comic sidekick is back to his wacky comic ways and life goes on and you shake your head and say, "Misunderestimated ... ahhh, that wacky Bush!"

New answers, although I'm not sure how much discussion this can be expected to provoke. I just thought y'all should know.

Nitsuh, Thursday, 27 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

another georgism - "Whether we bbring our enemies to justice or justice to our enemies, justice will be done." - if you can, just htink of him as the new bill hicks, it's a lot funnier and less scarieer that way

Geoff, Thursday, 27 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I was listening to that speech live. It was bad enough he used a non- word three times but he actually stumbled over it once. ::cringe::

Samantha, Thursday, 27 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

only once - he's getting better

Geoff, Thursday, 27 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh c'mon now. I don't like Bush more than anyone else. But I like to think that I don't like him because I have an informed opinion about him -- he's a evil little pawn with a lot of mischief up his sleeve. But calling people on their grammatical errors is just nitpicking.

Jack Redelfs, Thursday, 27 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

He sounds like a dufus when he talks. And he has a stable of highly paid speechwriters and publicity coaches. Using poorly constructed sentances and non-exsistent words when speaking on national radio/television is unforgivable in this situation.

Samantha, Thursday, 27 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dude, does nobody remember how his *dad* talked? It's inherited, that's why I don't particularly care.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 27 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Calling people on their grammatical errors is just nitpicking.

Wait, wait, wait -- my point isn't to call him on the grammatical error. I'm just interested in the occurrence itself. After all "misunderestimated" was one of the chief original making-fun-of- Bush's-language incidents, so the fact that he now returns and uses it three times in a row strikes me as amusingly hopeful. As in "American life will return to normal, right down to our President using words that don't exist."

Hence my action-movie comment. Like "lovable George, staying right on course."

Nitsuh, Thursday, 27 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think we're witnessing the transition of the US predidency into something like the British royal family: heritable, symbolic, morale- boosting, but without real power.

Bush should cede the power to lieutenants like Colin Powell and confine his role to waving regally from car windows, like the Queen or Queen Mother.

Momus, Thursday, 27 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

So how about Berlusconi? Isn't this comment hinting in a really terrifying direction? Or is this pretty much how you've seen Berlusconi all along?

He terrified me from the get-go, but the "reconstitute itself on the basis of its Christian roots" sounds not-so-different from Hitler -- and I say that not in the sense of hyperbole, but in the sense that I could very easily see this being Nazi rhetoric.

Nitsuh, Thursday, 27 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

maybe "misunderestimated" will end up like "normalcy."

Maria, Thursday, 27 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Silvio B is one of those people who will eventually die like the rest of us. This is my only solace.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 27 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

grazie Silvio per aver reso l'Italia una barzelletta

francesco, Thursday, 27 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Every picture I have ever seen of Bush ,he look s like a God damn dufus. His face is like Jerry Ford's agility, or Reagan's colon.

Pennysong Hanle y, Thursday, 27 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

He came to O'Hare airport today. I heard part of the speech on the radio. Urging people to fly, he sez, "take advantage of America's airlines to vist all of America's wonderful.. um... destination.. spots."

Sterling Clover, Friday, 28 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Can he speak Spanish better than English?

Pennysong Hanle y, Friday, 28 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No

anthony, Friday, 28 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

bush severely embarassed himself by trying to speak spanish to Spanish PM Aznar, he greeted Aznar in spanish who proceeded to speak to bush in spanish. had to switch to english quickly cos bush couldn't understand a word.

Berlusconi seems intent on ostracizing himself from other european leaders. He's on a bad start being hard right when most of the rest of europe is on a centre-left tip at the moment (Aznar-E is centre right but very dull and thats about it for yurp). He's pm mainly because the Italian left was (as ever) disorganised at the elections, but more importantly because he was able to put ten times as much money into his campaign as the rest of the italian political entities put together, owning three tv networks and several newspaper has got to help.

he's very catholic nationalist, the bush of yurp. Doesn't to my knowledge make up words though, can also speak english which is more than bush can do

los dos son re-hijos de diez milliones de putas

Geoff, Friday, 28 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

two years pass...
You all are stupid. You are picking him apart and you don't even have something that he has - enough backbone to stand up for what is right. You all are sorry losers with too much time on your hands. At least President Bush is making something of his life. That's more than it appears to me that even you all have done. Quit sitting around picking at people that are doing something and get off your butts and go make a difference yourself. If you don't think that Bush is making any good difference in the world than you go make a difference. Otherwise you have no room to talk. That's like seeing a child in the middle of the street and picking at any person that goes to remove that child from the street instead of getting up yourself and going and doing something about it. If you don't like President George Bush, that's fine. This is a free country. You have the right to like or dislike anyone. Atleast you could go support someone you do like to be the next president. That's more profitable.
