Italy's prime minister, Silvio Berlusconi, said that western civilization is superior to the Islamic world. Berlusconi urged Europe to "reconstitute itself on the basis of its Christian roots."
Second, the maybe-sadder, maybe-funnier, maybe-sorta-lovable one, from President Bush:
"The folks who conducted to act on our country on September 11th made a big mistake....They underestimated America. They underestimated our resolve, our determination, our love for freedom. They misunderestimated the fact that we love a neighbor in need. They misunderestimated the compassion of our country. I think they misunderestimated the will and determination of the commander in chief, too."
This is like at the end of the action movie, when the wacky comic sidekick is back to his wacky comic ways and life goes on and you shake your head and say, "Misunderestimated ... ahhh, that wacky Bush!"

Wait, wait, wait -- my point isn't to call him on the grammatical error. I'm just interested in the occurrence itself. After all "misunderestimated" was one of the chief original making-fun-of- Bush's-language incidents, so the fact that he now returns and uses it three times in a row strikes me as amusingly hopeful. As in "American life will return to normal, right down to our President using words that don't exist."
Hence my action-movie comment. Like "lovable George, staying right on course."
Bush should cede the power to lieutenants like Colin Powell and confine his role to waving regally from car windows, like the Queen or Queen Mother.

He terrified me from the get-go, but the "reconstitute itself on the basis of its Christian roots" sounds not-so-different from Hitler -- and I say that not in the sense of hyperbole, but in the sense that I could very easily see this being Nazi rhetoric.

Berlusconi seems intent on ostracizing himself from other european leaders. He's on a bad start being hard right when most of the rest of europe is on a centre-left tip at the moment (Aznar-E is centre right but very dull and thats about it for yurp). He's pm mainly because the Italian left was (as ever) disorganised at the elections, but more importantly because he was able to put ten times as much money into his campaign as the rest of the italian political entities put together, owning three tv networks and several newspaper has got to help.
he's very catholic nationalist, the bush of yurp. Doesn't to my knowledge make up words though, can also speak english which is more than bush can do
