Internet Explorer Help

Hello techies.

It seems that Explorer on my roomates computer has something wrong with it.

First of all, most obviously, there are no pop-ups anymore. WHich is neither here nor there, as pop ups suck.

Secondly, there is a marked LAG in all functions of web use, esp. in pages where there are known popups (ie. ESPN, CNN, Angelfire pages, etc).

It seems that this would be a function of JAVA, and might be a sign of a problem with JAVA.

Also, I attempted to delete all Explorer files and re-install the program, but the computer won't let me, claiming there is a sharing violation.

This is a second hand computer and we have no master files to strip and re-install ANYTHING. There is also no way to backup all the files onto removable media.

Netscape seems to work fine when I installed it, though I don't want to install it on his computer, because he's already huffy, 'coz he thinks I broke the computer in the first place.

You help is welcome,

Sincerely, ModJ

OK, what does that accomplish -- should I restore factory defaults?

ModJ, Thursday, 18 September 2003 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Unbolt the defaults and stow the mizzen-mast! YARRRR!

Was that helpful?

deltree c:\windows

[er, don't actually do that]

OK, I'm mostly interested in deleting IE and re-installing to see what happens, but the comp won't let me. Is there a secret lock button I'm missing?

ModJ, Friday, 19 September 2003 00:06 (twenty-two years ago)

(I use Mozilla's Phoenix for the most part and am barely a techie, but these things used to help me when I was running IE)

On the internet options -> security bit, might be an idea to check that you're set to 'medium' - or its equivalent - just in case that's part of the problem. And I always managed to solve lags by clearing out the temporary internet files folder (which is in c:\windows, I believe - you no doubt already do this, but I tended to sort by name, leave the cookies if there are any, select the rest and delete them, which takes a few unnerving seconds) though that might not help.

Yeah, cookies and history are already gone...

I don't think you can uninstall major Windows components, you would have to just reinstall the whole OS.

Did you delete any IE files or is it in the same state as when you asked the question? Can you check your task manager (ctrl+alt+delete) and see if any other programs are running in the background? Have you installed pop-up blocking software or do you have spyware on your computer?

daria g (daria g), Friday, 19 September 2003 00:10 (twenty-two years ago)

All the files are intact -- I can't get rid of them.

No other programs in the bkgrnd, as multiple restarts confirm.

No pop-up blocking software, and Ad-Aware cathes the spyware (I think)

ModJ@nomail.com, Friday, 19 September 2003 00:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe Ad-Aware is what's doing this? It is designed to kill pop-ups, I think. Try opening that if it's running and check the settings. That could be yr problem, maybe?

OK... let's see...

ModJ, Friday, 19 September 2003 00:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I wish I was an expert on this but if the browser is just slow, it doesn't sound like something is seriously wrong, so I wouldn't worry too much.

daria g (daria g), Friday, 19 September 2003 00:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Something is seriously wrong, I assure you. I think It's a JAVA problem...

ModJ, Friday, 19 September 2003 00:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Have you checked the java settings in tools -> internet options? Is under 'advanced' - if you have the java console enabled, that could be be a reason for the lag (my phoenix lags on certain pages while setting up its java console, so).

cis (cis), Friday, 19 September 2003 00:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Java is enabled, and known javascript-containing pages don't work. I want them to work, not disable them...

...I don't know if this is making any sense at all

ModJ, Friday, 19 September 2003 00:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Microsoft
