Why is a raven like a writing desk?

It's been bothering me ever since I first read Alice in Wonderland. Alice said she thought she had the answer, but The Mad Hatter picked her up on her indecisiveness and the conversation quickly moved away. In the end, we never did find out the answer. So - please advise, if you know.

I've heard about 4 different answers to this and I cant recall any of them off the top of my head now, well that was useful wasn't it! :)

Though this answer seems to clear it up. Damn spoilsport, that Cecil. Arr, what a scurvy dog he be.

Says the author:

Enquiries have been so often addressed to me, as to whether any answer to the Hatter's Riddle can be imagined, that I may as well put on record here what seems to me to be a fairly appropriate answer: "Because it can produce a few notes, tho they are very flat; and it is nevar put with the wrong end in front!" This, however, is merely an afterthought; the Riddle, as originally invented, had no answer at all.

xp (I assume)

This was dealt with on another thread and it was very funny but the server is too busy right now for me to go searching for it.
