How do you get your midnight snack on?

What tender victuals do you ingest before rest? My absolute favorite, post-pub, pre-bed is welsh rarebit, made simply with good cheshire, ale, butter, s&p. When sober, I'll just sip warm milk and honey.

What is your favorite snack to sleep on, savoury or sweet?

Lewis Carnelian (Grandin), Sunday, 21 September 2003 20:23 (twenty-two years ago)

whatever's in the fridge, unfortunately I've thrown the remainder of today's gravy in the stock otherwise it would be gravy on buttered toast, gentleman's relish or anchovy ketchup on toast makes a fine midnight snack.

Ed (dali), Sunday, 21 September 2003 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Please explain "gentleman's relish." Is there such a thing as "hoodlum relish" as well? Cheers.

Lewis Carnelian (Grandin), Sunday, 21 September 2003 20:36 (twenty-two years ago)

gentleman's relish is a paste made from anchovies and is excellent on buttered toast.

Ed (dali), Sunday, 21 September 2003 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

see here

Ed (dali), Sunday, 21 September 2003 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Thank you, Ed. Now to try and find it stateside. Any other such treats you might recommend? Especially ones that might be offensive to sensitive American palates? Those are my favorite.

Henderson's Relish

Ed (dali), Sunday, 21 September 2003 20:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I need a stronger cheese for that desired effect, Slutsky. Psychoactive mushrooms are one thing, psychoactive cheese sauce another. You read that book, btw? It's damn near impossible to find a complete Nemo for less than $100. Dern.

Lewis Carnelian (Grandin), Sunday, 21 September 2003 21:09 (twenty-two years ago)

No, I haven't! I want McCay stuff but I don't have the money, sadly.

s1utsky (slutsky), Sunday, 21 September 2003 21:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Sad that it takes so much money to get such quality, more like. Same problem with moebius. Alas.

Lewis Carnelian (Grandin), Sunday, 21 September 2003 21:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Welsh rarebit? Warm milk and honey? Anchovy ketchup? Gravy on toast? What the hell are you guys talking about?

Sean (Sean), Monday, 22 September 2003 00:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh I forgot one: gentleman's relish. I have never ever heard this term before in my life.

A good it's midnight i'm stoned i need a snack for me: Ben & Jerry's ice cream.

Sean (Sean), Monday, 22 September 2003 00:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Gentleman's relish is such a great weird name.

s1utsky (slutsky), Monday, 22 September 2003 00:16 (twenty-two years ago)

It sounds just awful. Actually I just looked up what Welsh Rarebit is (beer stirred into melted cheese and baked on bread). It sounds ok I guess as a snack, but it's not something I'm aware of anyone making. The closest thing American stylee would be a grilled cheese sandwich.

Sean (Sean), Monday, 22 September 2003 00:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Rarebit is awesome. But seriously, as a midnight snack?

Last night I had a huge craving for banana cake. In particular, Entenmann's, but I would have settled for... well, no, I really wanted Entenmann's.

Chris P (Chris P), Monday, 22 September 2003 00:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Kielbasa and strub's half-sours

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 22 September 2003 00:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm enjoying massive slices of peanut-butter toast right now.

s1utsky (slutsky), Monday, 22 September 2003 00:40 (twenty-two years ago)

usually I end up having a midnight meal, but if I'm up for a late night kinda-drunk snack, it's probably the beef jerky w/ mozzerella stick they sell for about a buck fifty at the local convenience store near my homestead.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 22 September 2003 00:44 (twenty-two years ago)

actually, it ain't beef jerky. It's a sausage stick. forgot.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 22 September 2003 00:45 (twenty-two years ago)

That's like my secret evil little drunk treat.

s1utsky (slutsky), Monday, 22 September 2003 00:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember the first time I went there looking for beef jerky I grabbed one and thought "damn for some reason I want some mozzarella with this" and then saw the pair together. I can't tell if I subconsciously already knew they made that or if drunks just think alike. Either way it filled my heart with glee. They're filling too.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 22 September 2003 00:55 (twenty-two years ago)

If it's a late-night drunk thing, then there's only one answer: BURRITOS. If I'm at home and watching TV, it's more like chips or cereal or peanut butter & jelly.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 22 September 2003 01:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, can I say though that I'm getting sick of the expression "Get your _____ on"?

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 22 September 2003 01:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Anthony that was exactly what I was thinking the first time I had one!

s1utsky (slutsky), Monday, 22 September 2003 01:59 (twenty-two years ago)

i totally read this thread title as "how do you get your midnight smack on?"

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 22 September 2003 02:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Monday, 22 September 2003 03:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Vodka.

kirsten (kirsten), Monday, 22 September 2003 03:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Funny thing, Jay. "Get your snack on" is actually the name of a song by Amon Tobin. I agree, though, getting various things on has become tiresome. My groove, my swerve, my man, getting all these things on. It's like layering up for cold whether.

beef stick + mozzarella = me at 15 walking to the 7-11 at 3 am baked with the buds

Eventually it evolved into:

tabasco slim jim + $.49 extra sharp cracker barrell cheddar stick = me at 16, etc.

It's like an orgy of fat. The roof of your mouth gets coated, like a well seasoned cast iron skillet.Sadly, this combo has become rather hard to assemble.

Peanut butter and honey takes me all the way back to 3rd grade. Has anyone crushed graham crackers into milk lately?

Lewis Carnelian (Grandin), Monday, 22 September 2003 03:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm eating a Cadbury Dream bar. I do know this is a dumb idea right now.

Wheat Thins and Kaukauna cheese

Steak-N-Shake

oops (Oops), Monday, 22 September 2003 04:12 (twenty-two years ago)

If it's midnight and I'm craving anything at all, it'd usually be watermelon or grapes or a nice, crisp red apple or a juicy peach or nectarine. My body somehow becomes this Healthier Foods Craver at that time of night. Oh yes, and on occasion I'll crave Twinkies, so yeah, not all of the food will be healthy, but still, it's a heck of a lot of fruit. And damn, now I want watermelon. Good thing I'm too sleepy to do anything about it or else I'd be downstairs by now cutting up the watermelon and holding back the drool.

Legendary Nothingness (Dee the Lurker), Monday, 22 September 2003 04:29 (twenty-two years ago)

What is this "Steak-N-Shake?" Is it for real, or have you finally articulated a food-combo-craving I have left unnamed for years, fearing its power?

Sean (Sean), Monday, 22 September 2003 04:41 (twenty-two years ago)

They're the only drive-thru place that's open all night.

oops (Oops), Monday, 22 September 2003 04:41 (twenty-two years ago)

They're the only drive-thru place that's open all night.

The Jack-in-the-Box places around me have drive-thrus that are open 24 hours, and Whataburger is open, period, 24 hours.

So maybe you're talking about that being the only drive-thru place around you that's open all night. ;)

*collapses for the night*

Legendary Nothingness (Dee the Lurker), Monday, 22 September 2003 04:47 (twenty-two years ago)

*rises up*

Correction: The two aforementioned places are open (well, with one of them it's the drive-thru, but anyway) 24 hours a day. You know, never closing, that sort of thing.

*collapses again, eyelids transformed into heavy leaden doors*

Legendary Nothingness (Dee the Lurker), Monday, 22 September 2003 04:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Damn. I had envisioned something along the lines of ground sirloin suspended in a thick, tasty, dairy-based sauce, drunk through a straw, preferably with your sweetheart. At the soda fountain. Er, steak fountain.

Lewis Carnelian (Grandin), Monday, 22 September 2003 04:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think there are any JITBs or Whataburgers east of the Mississippi.

Follow that dream, Lewis.

oops (Oops), Monday, 22 September 2003 04:50 (twenty-two years ago)

It would be like...like...Beefy Bubble Tea! Wait, no, must be shake-like. I'm thinking stroganoff in a blender. Or maybe "chili-no chunk." Wait. I think I'll have some chili on toast for midnight snack. Dammit! No toast. Mmmm. Chili.

Lewis Carnelian (Grandin), Monday, 22 September 2003 04:58 (twenty-two years ago)

It is midnight; I am eating sesame sticks.

Chris P (Chris P), Monday, 22 September 2003 06:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Monday, 22 September 2003 10:49 (twenty-two years ago)

oooh, I haven't had malt loaf in ages...

Anna (Anna), Monday, 22 September 2003 10:51 (twenty-two years ago)

malt loaf is classic - i bought a pack of two for £1.30. i also think this is the first time i have been able to eat anything less than an entire malt loaf in one sitting

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Monday, 22 September 2003 10:54 (twenty-two years ago)

malt loaf is yummy. now where was that thread about ready buttered malt loaf & people's objections to it?
I like cereal before bed, or maybe a big mug of tea & hot chocolate.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 22 September 2003 11:02 (twenty-two years ago)

bovril is good in gravy... nowhere else!

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Monday, 22 September 2003 11:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Late last night I had some tomato soup with crackers and fresh-grated parmesan. Mm.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 22 September 2003 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

That Amon Tobin song was the first thing that came to my mind when I read the thread title! It's fucking gnarly!

One of my late-night faves = putting stuff in a tortilla/pita, occasionally cooking it in some form or other. Last night it was leftover huevos con chorizo and rice I had leftover from brunch shoved into a corn tortilla and hotified via skillet.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 22 September 2003 14:06 (twenty-two years ago)

"Malt loaf"?

Chris P (Chris P), Monday, 22 September 2003 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

A german just told me about "hawaiian toast". It's bread with canned pineapple slices and cheese singles melted over the top. I guess I'd eat that if I were drunk.

Octothorpe (Octothorpe), Monday, 22 September 2003 20:36 (twenty-two years ago)

cheese fries at the snack bar! the fries are really hot oily and crunchy (they can burn your tongue) and there's plenty of gooey cheese. Best thing EVER. Financially and healthfully I shouldn't eat them three times a week like I am though.

Maria (Maria), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 01:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Anchovies. On their own.

What kind of anchovies do you like, Mark? I've had a low batting average in finding anchovies that ... do that thing that anchovies I like do, instead of just reminding me of cat food and Heathcliff comic strips.

My midnight snacks ... hrm. If I'm up and don't need to be anywhere in the morning, I'm as likely to cook as anything else, but that doesn't mean I necessarily eat what I cook -- I might fridge it for the next day's dinner. Snacks ... pretzels with sriracha (fuck, not for two weeks, this household is a South Beach household), frozen potato product with ketchup and hot sauce (fuck ditto!), or a microwave burrito (... aw man!)

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 01:55 (twenty-two years ago)

What I discovered this evening: Spiced Apple Brew Ginger Beer does **not** go with garlic bread. It was pretty good garlic bread that I made myself, but... yeah, the taste sensations kind of clash.

lyra (lyra), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 02:31 (twenty-two years ago)

That actually gave me a food-clash flashback. That garlic-bread-in-the-foil-thing-in-the-freezer used to be a post-Denny's-4a.m. snack for me in high school, and in the fall, apple cider was my default beverage if I didn't want caffeine ... so I kept rediscovering over and over again, they really shouldn't be at the same meal together.

Oh boy sometimes I like to eat candy in bed, although it is an embarrassment. I like leftovers, esp. of something you put on rice: stroganoff, curry, stir fry, chicken ala king, etc. (I know some of these things are usually served on noodles of various type but I am way into the rices.)

If I'm out: Jack in the Box, usually some breakfast thing.
