suggestions for fighting sinus congestion

I feel like someone dumped the contents of a cement mixer into my sinus cavity. When I blow my nose a dull rumbly sound accompanies it in my inner ear and fluid comes out my eye. Anybody got any funky tips for combatting this horrid state?

New hopefully making me and others able to breath and think properly answers please.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 22 September 2003 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

spicy food and hot coffee!

teeny (teeny), Monday, 22 September 2003 18:18 (twenty-two years ago)

1. Pseudafed - decongestant (upside, it works, downside, it's not good for people with high blood pressure, and it dehydrates you)

along with

2. Benadryl - antihistimine (upside, drys out your head, makes you drowsy so you can sleep, downside, makes you drowsy)

along with

3. Zicam - zinc gel (upside, it may stave off sinus infections, downside, it may be an expensive placebo)

along with

4. Frequent use of saline solution - spray it in your nose, blow your nose. Upside, cleans out your nose, soothes the lining of the nose. Down side, none really. What's not to love about spraying water up your nose and blowing it out?

Skottie, Monday, 22 September 2003 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

WASABI!

A Nairn (moretap), Monday, 22 September 2003 18:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Wasabi/spicy food sounds like it would help right now. I took some benadryl already, but this is some monster no-nose-breating shit going on here. I'm drinking hella hot green tea too, but I need some industrial strength blockage destruction, like I need to shove a plumber's snake down my nose or something.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 22 September 2003 18:32 (twenty-two years ago)

This is just a personally preference, but I think that blowing the nose (with all that pressure put on the nose) is worse then sucking air in through the nose and pulling the mucus into the mouth. (I'm not such which sounds more disgusting)

A Nairn (moretap), Monday, 22 September 2003 18:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I prefer blowing my nose cuz then the mucus is not in me nor is it dripping down my face. I'd prefer being able to breath to either option though.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 22 September 2003 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

antibiotics.
the same thing happened to me last year. if you are a smoker and it bothers you enought to post about it, then go see your doctor and you will feel better within 24 hours.

also, worse case scenario: hearing loss

kephm, Monday, 22 September 2003 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

feel better and mail me your buddah

kephm, Monday, 22 September 2003 18:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Is this a result of allergies? If yes, try Claritin (now available over the counter and as a generic). Try chicken soup. Also, just to drain the works, try taking a hot shower, or else running hot water into a sink and lean over it, with a towel draped over the whole thing so you can breathe in the steam.

j.lu (j.lu), Monday, 22 September 2003 18:42 (twenty-two years ago)

kephm could be right. If you have a bacterial sinus infection, you should go get antibiotics. If you have a bad cold--virus--antibiotics won't help. Depends. Either way, you need to take a decongestant like pseudafed. Benadryl won't open up your nose, it will dry it out, but by itself won't do the trick unless you just have hayfever. Good luck. It's a rotten feeling!

Skottie, Monday, 22 September 2003 18:42 (twenty-two years ago)

water water and more water.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 22 September 2003 18:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Do you have health insurance? Can you afford to see a doctor? I recommend seeing a doctor. If it's allergies, you might be able to do something about it that way.

I have mentioned it before, but I find nasal irrigation to be extremely helpful. However, I do this using warm salt water in a Waterpik machine, with a "Grossan tip" attachment. So you won't be able to use this method right away. (You turn the waterpik into the lowest setting, stick the attachment into one nostril, and the water pushes the mucous out the other nostril. Then you do the same thing from the other side.) You can do this by trying to inhale water from your hands, as well, but I never found that worked for me. Do not try nasal irrigation if you are truly completely clogged up and basically can't breathe through your nose.

You can try inhaling steam. Boiling eucalyptus leaves and then inhaling that steam has gotten results for me, but it will destroy the pan you boil them in.

In addition to a decongestant, you can try a mucous thinner.

Al Andalous, Monday, 22 September 2003 18:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I've also found that the herb Goldenseal helps loosen congestion, but I now stay away from it since I've read that people with pollen allergies shouldn't be using it. (You might want to avoid if you aren't sure you don't have pollen allergies.)

Al Andalous, Monday, 22 September 2003 18:52 (twenty-two years ago)

And speaking of milk (see other thread currently near top of the page): unfortunately, I find that dairy products do tend to generate more mucous than I would have otherwise. I would try to stay away from dairy products if your congestion is so bad. (I don't know if you are one of the ILX vegans, in which case you will already be staying away from dairy.)

Al Andalous, Monday, 22 September 2003 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

And speaking of milk (see other thread currently near top of the page):

Would you be referring to the "Canada" thread, by any chance?

Skottie, Monday, 22 September 2003 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

My mother swears by putting drops of garlic water into her nose/sinus cavities.

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Monday, 22 September 2003 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

No this is definitely allergy-related. A steamy hot shower sounds amazing and I think that would make a big difference. I've taken Claritin before and it works hella well but I'm worried about building up a dependence on it (again). I was once prescribed this stuff I think it was called Nasonex that was a spray, and good gravy that stuff worked well! Until the nose-bleeds started, that is.

I wouldn't normally have posted about something this "me me me" in orientation but I know others on this board have had sinus problems before (Ned had a good thread once I remember), and I thought it would be a good place to compile these rememdies for future reference.

(x-post I have pollen allergies but also mold allergies, which is what's messing with me right now)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 22 September 2003 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Oooh Rosemary that reminds me eating whole cloves of garlic helps clear you up (although it makes you really runny in the process).

And yeah I'm kinda avoiding milk right now as I'm of the body/blood type where my body turns it into mucus rather readily.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 22 September 2003 19:03 (twenty-two years ago)

lemon ginger and chilli 'tea'

put lemons, lemon juice, chilli, and fresh ginger in boiling water, drink, pour more water on the dregs

Ed (dali), Monday, 22 September 2003 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Pseudoephedrine pills (Pretty sure that's all sudafed is), the active ingredient in most sinus OTC medications.

I have sinus problems almost constantly, but they've never been able to get it to go away completely with medication (also: no medical insurance, so they can't do all that much). So my doctor told me to start taking 60mg tablets of pseudoephedrine (100 for $5 at the school pharmacy), and that helped out a ton. Plus, I lost about fifteen pounds.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 22 September 2003 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

That sounds awesome Ed; will have to try it tonight (much like that mulled wine recipe too)!

this is totally your license to go get superspicy thai man, go for it!

teeny (teeny), Monday, 22 September 2003 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

What about trying allergy injections? They have definitely helped me over the years. (They certainly haven't cured me, since I have been getting them off and on since, but I am worse off when I don't get them, and I have lots of allergies, including mold allergies.)

Also, what teeny said. That sort of thing does seem to help, at least temporarily.

Al Andalous, Monday, 22 September 2003 21:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, you should try the eucalyptus leaf steam just for the experience.

I remind you, as well, that all types of smoke can irritate the sinuses.

Al Andalous, Monday, 22 September 2003 21:21 (twenty-two years ago)

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Monday, 22 September 2003 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

The Waterpik & Grossan tip thing worked wonders for me. Note that it is called the Grossan tip because when you'll be telling people about it, you'll be Grossan them out.

Also: miso soup (no not thru the Waterpik thing), and sushi with MUCH wasabi.

I used to have some bubble bath with much eucalyptus & mint & stuff in it, specifically for hot steamy baths at such times -- have NO idea where you'd find that, though.

i am the modren man (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 15:38 (twenty years ago)

I had this a few weeks ago - I think it was lingering for a couple of months (as I'd wake up to Technicolor loogies almost every day), then it flared up. No chest congestion, but my head felt super-inflated, and the stuff exiting my nostrils was not the good stuff. Went to the doctor, got some free antibiotics (& took them in conjunction w/ some Sudafed), and it sorta worked.

Then, two weeks later, it came back IN SPADES - full on chest blech, soreness all over, whopping sinus headaches, lots of raspy wet coughing followed by the egression of nasty looking blobs from various holes. Called doctor, gave him the skinny, asked for the good stuff, was given a prescription for Zithromax. Five doses for $70 (as I have no health insurance) - TOTALLY WORTH IT. For two days, before I got the pills, I felt like someone was filling me up with disease every night, making me stiff and sore and sweaty (and not in a good way). After the Zithromax kicked in, stuff cleared up nicely and quickly. I also used some Day & Nyquil - the Nyquil definitely helped at night. Also, the first night I took the antibiotics, I had some chili from Wendy's - that helped, too. And I drank like a fish, mostly water (though I didn't drink any hot liquids until Day 3, when I had lots of tea AND a big bowl of chicken broth). By Day 5, I was 90% OK, and ready to go back to work! Good thing I got sick on the weekend!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 15:53 (twenty years ago)

Motrin Cold and Sinus is teh bomb. The only thing that rids me of my headaches, too.

Je4nne Ć’ury (Jeanne Fury), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 15:54 (twenty years ago)

We use Alka-Seltzer Cold Plus too.

Sudafed works. Steam works (I don't bother with eucalyptus). Sometimes one dose of steam (I only do about five minutes) and then a second one a few hours later is enough to do the trick. After steaming you could put some saline in there to really loosen it up. Be careful with the saline though, because bottle can get infected by touching your nose.

Rite Aid Suphedrine Maximum Strength Sinus, yo. ("Compare to the active ingredients in Sudafed Sinus Caplets.")

jody von oy (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 17:07 (twenty years ago)

The best organic thing to do is just to boil your head. If you have a microwave gun, just shoot it at the front of your head for a couple of minutes and your sinuses will flush out cleanly.

M. White (Miguelito), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

Good thing I got sick on the weekend!

Errr, what the fuck??? Surely the opposite of what you want? Do you not have sick-pay in America?

Anyway.

WASABI:

Is not a good cure, it gives a sensation of clearing the sinuses, but it actually makes them worse.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 20:58 (twenty years ago)

Chews, that "yay sick on weekend!" sentiment was some bitter-ass eye-rolling sarcasm, as I had plans on the weekend that were scuttlebutted because I was making like a busticated sewage treatment plant.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 21:10 (twenty years ago)

AVOID coffee, caffiene, anything that dehydrates you. Drink TONS of water and juice, like drown yourself in it. Hot shower/steam is good.

Many people don't, no. And some who do get it docked out of their vacation. Fuck America.

When you go to the drugstore to get a cold medicine, be sure to get one with guafensin (that's the name of the active ingredient for mucous thinning--will keep you from getting an ear infection). Also the saline thing may help. Also, lots of tea. Feel better.

One of the best things I've found with sinusitis is to take saline and hold it vertically so it really squirts all the way in there. It might sting and feels a little gross when it trickles down your throat, but I feel like it works wonders for getting rid of the pain and the infection.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Thursday, 5 October 2006 02:56 (nineteen years ago)

Haha my dad has one of those pots and he doesn't even have sinus problems. It also looks strangely phallic and wrong but if it works than why not?

My mum had constant sinus infections up until about last year, when antibiotics simply stopped being effective and her GP prescribed acupuncture. It's meant to have a relatively high success rate and it worked for her. I have also found the Nasonex spray to be effective.

I havent had sinus or hayfever problems in some years now. I wonder if taking up smoking has had any bearing on it?

Trayce, Monday, 30 April 2007 04:13 (eighteen years ago)

i've developed sinus problems in the last year for no apparent reason. my solution is 2 ibuprofen (for the headache) + sudafed + allegra + prescription nasonex when it's REALLY bad. i can't imagine why smoking would help.

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 15:29 (seventeen years ago)

Stick head over boiling teapot, then stick head in freezer (since it's not cold outside anymore). Hot/cold/hot/cold is supposed to help babies with the croup, maybe it'll work on you too?

Laurel, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 15:31 (seventeen years ago)

I don't do it but I'm getting all nostalgic. I swear by hot drinks. Honey and lemon esp. Drink it quick, get a tissue.

COLD, sore throat on top of sinus shit.

Also none of the above is working very well.

Dr Morbius, Monday, 28 January 2008 19:50 (seventeen years ago)

Then stick with none of the above.

uh, ha ha?

ok, not so funny.

Generally, when a cold virus is active, you're going to have a lot of mucus. Decongestants work some, but they do it by shriveling your mucus mebranes, which is mighty harsh. Your call.

The sore throat may be a bacterial infection starting. A simple salt-water gargle may help with that. A good clue about the presence of bacteria is the color and consistency of your phlegm. Yellow is bad. Green is very bad. The more solid it is, the worse it is, too.

Bacteria can relocate further down and give you bronchitis or bacterial pneumonia. Ginger and lemon tea is nice for its antibacterial propoerties as it bathes your throat.

Aspirin, acetominophen or ibuprofen for the pain.

Don't expect miracles. You're sick.

Aimless, Monday, 28 January 2008 23:57 (seventeen years ago)

When I had will-to-live-crushingly-painful sinusitis a few years ago, I switched from decongestants to an expectorant. I had been on some serious antibiotics for some time without entirely killing the beast and it was only when i switched that it started to help.

Michael White, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 00:00 (seventeen years ago)
