What are your computers, bicycles, cars, favorite mug, beard trimmer, or other inanimate objects named?

Chris P (Chris P), Monday, 22 September 2003 23:02 (twenty-two years ago)

They are nameless tools under my heartless domination.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 22 September 2003 23:05 (twenty-two years ago)

We're supposed to name them!?
I had a hard enough time finding a name for my cat (Fjodor, or Fyodor for you English-speaking types)

Øystein Holm-Olsen (Øystein H-O), Monday, 22 September 2003 23:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Norbert the F***ing Casualty.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 22 September 2003 23:08 (twenty-two years ago)

i tried really hard to call my dishwasher "steve" for awhile.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 22 September 2003 23:08 (twenty-two years ago)

It doesn't have a name, but when I reinstalled Windows and it asked for a label for the hard drive, I put in INKling.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 22 September 2003 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I lovingly call mine "Motherfucker", but only when smacking it around.

Girolamo Savonarola, Monday, 22 September 2003 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I believe the current favorite is "goddamn motherfucking piece of shit." It changes often.

luna (luna.c), Monday, 22 September 2003 23:13 (twenty-two years ago)

My first Mac was called "Eileen"; the iMac was "Bethesda"; the iBook is "Medea"; the new iPod is called "The Sliver". But those are generally the only objects I've been able to name -- never did figure out a name for my bike or guitar or anything. Didn't really want or need one. But the harddrives -- which end up standing in for the computer, metonymy style -- they beg to be named, and I am tethered to the computer so it seems worth investing it with a little more humanity.

Chris P (Chris P), Monday, 22 September 2003 23:13 (twenty-two years ago)

When I got my old PC back in 1997, the first thing I did was rename the CD-rom drive "Lisa Loeb" and the A-drive "Osama Bin Laden". That was when he was still underground.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 22 September 2003 23:18 (twenty-two years ago)

My computer (or maybe just the icon for it on my desktop) is named "Legend of Eternity."

s1utsky (slutsky), Monday, 22 September 2003 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

My current new PC is called "the laptop beastie". I dunno why I named it this, I just did. My older desktop PC is called "Trarse" which is one of my own nicknames (ie, trace + arse = trarse).

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 22 September 2003 23:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I call mine "laptop"

A Girl Named Sam (thatgirl), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 00:05 (twenty-two years ago)

bnw (bnw), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 00:16 (twenty-two years ago)

DOCD10461. I don't name inamnimate things because they usually have numbers, eg my car is NX8845.

isadora (isadora), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 00:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I've called all of my computers Tinkertoy. The current one must be Tinkertoy III.

I called my old car Lil' Putt-Putt. My current car used to be The Crapmobile, but then I thought it resented the name and was deliberately breaking down. I haven't come up with a nicer name for it yet.

j.lu (j.lu), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 00:36 (twenty-two years ago)

One of my friends called her car Bitch Chunks. It always sounded odd when they shouted "get in bitchchunks!" at us when picking us up, heh.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 00:42 (twenty-two years ago)

OMG, I've never named my computer anything! Almost seven years of ownership and it's never been called anything other than "my computer". Aww. ;)

I have, on the other hand, named vehicles. The one I currently drive is called Palomino, um... which is named after the 1988 Duran Duran song "Palomino". I swear to you I am NOT a psychotic Duranie, just an uberfan. But, as always, opinions may and can vary on this.

(If you're super-curious, you'll highlight the above.)

Legendary Nothingness (Dee the Lurker), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 00:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm calling my car "Fiddy" from now. Cause it has a bullet hole. It's hard like dat.

A Girl Named Sam (thatgirl), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 00:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I dunno what my computer is called, but I can assure you that it is *not* Ferrari Meatsarossa.

Kim (Kim), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 00:45 (twenty-two years ago)

(that's cause Ferrari Meatsarossa is actually something verry closely resembling an overweight housecat)

Kim (Kim), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 00:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know inanimate objects either, but if I did I'd call everything Bessie, with slight alterations in pronunciations to distinguish between things.
I also like the idea of calling something 'Steve'.

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 01:59 (twenty-two years ago)

My cellphone is called either "bootleg" or "ghetto" as it's held together with duct tape.

A Girl Named Sam (thatgirl), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 02:00 (twenty-two years ago)

My computers are named 'Frood', 'Gimp', 'Orthos', 'Gandalf', and 'Ariel' (the ILX server). What should I call the new ILX database server?

daria g (daria g), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 05:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmmm... My last computer was called 'Kafka' because I had a sticker that said 'Kafka' stuck to the monitor (I found the sticker on the windowsill in my room during the third year of uni; allegedly it's some company for skaters or something, not a raondom sticker with Franz's surname on it). As my new one has XP, it's called 'Auspicious Fish'. Never one to miss a marketing opportunity, am I?

When I first got my PC I spent ages arranging partitions and I gave them all silly names. Now after the 48thmillionfuckingtimes that Windows has had to be re-installed, u can guess the rest ...

Tho my wood-axe is called 'bitch-murderer'

Fuzzy (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 08:43 (twenty-two years ago)

My home computer is called 'candle'; I've forgotten why. The computers I've named at work are 'elvis', 'lisa' and 'judy'.

caitlin (caitlin), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 11:04 (twenty-two years ago)

My car is called Mr Rushworth. See Mansfield Park for an explanation why.

Mark C (Mark C), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 11:47 (twenty-two years ago)

The WinXP Dell is called HIDDENCHANTRY2
The new Linux box was called MAUNALOA ('cuz it had "Caldera" on it) but I've wiped the drive and will soon rename it either MAGICIAN ('cuz it'll have "Mandrake" on it) or SUBGENII (if I can get Slackware to work on it)
The old (dead) Linux/BeOS box was called HIDDENCHANTRY, but after I repair it and turn it into a hardware firewall, I'm planning on renaming it ITSATRAP

The cluster I helped build at my old job had seven nodes: CLARK, DIANA, ARTHUR, KYLE, BRUCE, JON, WALLY

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 11:57 (twenty-two years ago)

CLARK, DIANA, ARTHUR, KYLE, BRUCE, JON, WALLY

we need a contest for the nerdiest set of names for a computer cluter/labs. U of MI was full of such naming schemes.

"kyle"? "KYLE"!?

Kingfish (Kingfish), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 12:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Kingfish (Kingfish), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 12:31 (twenty-two years ago)

At work we had them named after obscure islands in the UK. Then guitars, painters and then mountains. So until last year we had an odd mash of left over names that stuck like Orkney, Leith, Telecaster and Monet. Now they all have generic names for their department and their version.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 12:34 (twenty-two years ago)

my aquarium is called "fishchernobyl".

Emilymv (Emilymv), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 12:34 (twenty-two years ago)

My company used to name its computers after famous Scottish people. Hostnames like 'maxwell' and 'burns' are fair enough, but 'david-octavius-hill' is a bit long to type and 'irn-bru' was, I felt, pushing it a bit. When I arrived I started a new naming scheme which is still vaguely Scotitsh, although noone else here has worked out what it is yet.

caitlin (caitlin), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 12:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Ed (dali), Friday, 20 February 2004 13:30 (twenty-one years ago)

So no moons of the solar system or _Gone With The Wind_ characters? Oh well.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 20 February 2004 13:31 (twenty-one years ago)

having names that I can remember how to spell would be advantageous.

Ed (dali), Friday, 20 February 2004 13:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I just asked our Unix host bod what ours are called at work and he told me 'cheese' and 'cake' because thats what he was eating at the time he named them.

we used to name ours after river names, due to us then being the river authorities, one was actually called 'Styx'

A computer that I cobbled together around the case and mainboard of an old PC from work was called "Wageslave". Otherwise my computers have boring tedious names... "M2" was so named because that was the name of the company it was from. Although I did name the server "Jupiter" after the naming scheme at my old university. The hard drives are all names <computer_name> C, D, E, etc..

Actually the hard drives on the server are named System, Data, Exchange, and FTP. This is despite an FTP server not having been running on that machine for years, and Exchange Server not ever being installed.

In IT support I saw a lot of different schemes from superheroes (workstations "Batman", "Superman", etc.), to ridiculously codes ("w4ln4f" = workstation on the left side of window #4, North wall, 4th floor), to indicators of office politics/wars (now why would an unpleasant colleague's PC have the network name "shithead"?)
