Here's a typical letter to write to the parish where you were baptized and to the corresponding bishopric.
In theory, the answer is fast (less than one month) and positive; in it it is confirmed to you the notation in margin of the register of the baptisms , gave up its baptism in date of... etcetc

Instructions
Concretely your date and birthplace appear in your certificate of baptism, like in the booklet of marriage of your parents. The request, dated, must be addressed to the current priest of the parish As with the bishop on which this parish depends. You can add a sentence asking so that the religious authority provide you a double of your baptismal certificate modified like oblige there the texts of the Data-processing National Commission and Freedom on the correction of the handwritten files. Do not hesitate to send a second letter (in recommended) if the first remainder without answer. Do not forget to join an envelope stamped for the answer.

STANDARD DEBAPTISATION REQUEST

Mister the priest (the bishop), Having been baptisé(e) in the church of..................................., it............ 19..., under the name of.........................................................................................., I would be grateful to you to agree to relate to the register of the baptisms and compared to my name the following mention: "its baptism by letter dated from the __ __ 19 __". disavowed. Indeed, my philosophical convictions do not correspond any more to those of the people, who in good faith, estimated to have to make me baptize. Thus, your scruples of truth, and mine will be alleviated, and your pure registers of any ambiguity. Note that legally the church cannot refuse me a request in debaptisation, and that it must, with the title of the regulation of the Data-processing National Commission and Freedom on the even handwritten files, to provide on a purely gracious basis a copy of the modified act . In waiting of your written confirmation I remain sincerely yours Fact with.................................. it...... 2003..

But I want to restore it with correspondance!

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Thursday, 25 September 2003 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 25 September 2003 20:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Uncircumcision, the restoration of the prepuce, has been performed since antiquity, perhaps since shortly after the first circumcision.

That sound you've just heard is of bishops falling from heart attacks, as they've just lost a huge section of their livelihood

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Thursday, 25 September 2003 21:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I must do this.

Ed (dali), Friday, 26 September 2003 07:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Does debaptisation also cancel out confirmation and all instances of communion?

I became an atheist some time ago but I've never felt the need to have my decision signed-off by my former diocese. Its a bit like sending them a letter saying "You ain't the boss of me no more! Yah boo sucks!"

robster (robster), Friday, 26 September 2003 07:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I'm really not that bothered.

Matt (Matt), Friday, 26 September 2003 08:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I'm really not that bothered.

The thing is, the catholic church will continue to use you as a faceless stat when they say they are speaking for the catholics of the world. When they condemn usage of preservatives, abortion, equality between sexes etc, it's in your name that it speak. When it refuses any social evolution, it's in your name that it speak, etc...
for those born christian without desiring it, debaptisation is the way to go to clear things up.

Sébastien Chikara (Sébastien Chikara), Friday, 26 September 2003 13:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Condemn usage of preservatives?

Ricardo (RickyT), Friday, 26 September 2003 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

"THE POPE CONDEMNS YOUR USE OF MARMALADE, SINNER!"

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 26 September 2003 13:39 (twenty-two years ago)

(yeah yeah, poetic license in the name of a joke)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 26 September 2003 13:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Soon, my friends, we'll eat pickled onions in the Vatican!

*xpost, Dan beat me to it*

robster (robster), Friday, 26 September 2003 13:40 (twenty-two years ago)

The disturbing thing is that I initially read:

When they condemn usage of preservatives, [condemn usage of] abortion, [condemn usage of] equality between sexes [...]

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 26 September 2003 13:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, well then, if you received an Anglican baptism like me then it doesn't matter, because the published figure of the size of the Anglican church is based on the average Eucharist attendance figures.

caitlin (caitlin), Friday, 26 September 2003 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

The Catholic Church has never actually claimed its doctrine was representative of the wishes of its laity, though, and I've never heard them say anything along the lines of "we say X and there are Y millions of us." Maybe they do so on the local level in countries with a larger Catholic population or history.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 26 September 2003 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

To spread like wildfire I think the transmission method for this idea should be a chain letter.
The best e-mail subject line I found so far is:
"Debaptisation instructions. Pass on to everyone you know who might be interested."
Other subjectlines:
"Debaptisation chain letter"
"Free debaptisation. READ IT AND SEND BACK!"
"Fancy a debaptisation?"
Anyone would like to propose good subject lines?

Could someone proofread what will be the body of the message (the first post in this thread) before I send it: editing for spelling and grammar, ways to make it easyer to figure out what the message really means / to formulat it to optimize it's efficiency.

For convenience I can also be reached off board at sebastien at hedonist-materialism dot com, registered users can contact me with webmail.

But you're assuming that many baptised catholics who disagree with many of the teachings of the catholic faith have become atheists.

I'm sure I'm one of the many baptised catholics who doesn't practice because I disagree with the organised religion, but can't quite bring myself to say that I don't believe that there is a God. And to me that's what debaptisation is saying.

Putting it another way, just because I don't believe in many of the teachings of the catholic faith doesn't mean that I can make the huge leap and become debaptised.

Vicky (Vicky), Friday, 3 October 2003 09:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Who cares what I assume, it was a mistake to derail my own thread.
I'm all about my first post, hope I'll get help to work on it :-)
