Need help from London

I am visiting London for the first time next week October 1-7). I have six available nights and, having heard about the city's Indian food, would like to sample a different Indian restaurant on each of those nights. In any case, since there are so many London people here, I would really appreciate suggestions and maybe some general direction as to where they are. Thanks in advance.

I'm not going to be in London anytime soon, but I would like to know if English people actually use the terms "cor" or "blimey".

fritz, Friday, 28 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

A lot may say 'blimey!', a few still say 'cor!', some even may still go for 'Cor blimey!'.
I like to kick it old skool and stick with 'God, blind me!'

how about "wizard!"?

One of the things I learned on this board, in the thread entitled "loo" I believe, was what to say when I get to England and need to use the restroom. I was nervous about saying "loo" as I did not know what was up to date and have used "restroom" or "bathroom" most my life. Now I am excited about using bogs, gents, and loos all around your fine country. Thanks to everyone who contributed to that thread and to Ambrose for his Indian restaurant suggestion.

Pinefox says "Cor". He must be a cock-er-nee geezer.

You could try some of the ones in Southall.

Tangentially related to what has sprung up here, but something that occured to me earlier.

Evolution of London-speak dialectic of extremes: 1.30 am last night, flicking from Ted Rogers on "3-2-1" from 1985 on Challenge TV to MTV Base showing the video for Genius Cru's "Course Bruv".

COR!!!

Robin Carmody, Friday, 28 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, FWIW I like "Cor", and I like the Pinefox's use of it, but I've always suspected that Reynard has his tongue in his cheek, and that it is a self-conscious act of pastiche. But I might be wrong.

for a change of pace, there is a good south indian on church street which i haf forgot the name of: but you can recognise it because it has a second branch right across the road from itself - w. i think a red elephant on the sign

there is another place near cable street which has "the finest parsee cooking in london" (and also the most entertainingly garrulous menu): my sistah always goes, but again i haf forgot the name (it's something like cafe spice)

A curry every night for six nights? Suzy's phrase "ringstung asshole" suddenly comes to mind...

Andrew L, Saturday, 29 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What did she mean by it?

Robin Carmody, Saturday, 29 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

it's a wagner opera cycle, innit?

probably dont need to go anywhere else, just go up and down the street.

With respect, this is rubbish. Restaurants on Brick Lane are numerous, cheap, atmospheric, but NOT VERY GOOD. There may well be an exception to this, but it's largely true.

The Stoke Newington one Mark.S mentions is RAS A and is quite wonderful, often nominated as best Indian restaurant in London etc. The original one is vegetarian, but there's a meaty one recently opened just opposite, plus there are branches in the West End (more expensive). Make sure you book.

Direct link to Rasa review

and also there's Rasa Samudra in the west end, which, I believe makes a feature of fish dishes.

Ringstung asshole: Andrew, you're correct, it's the sensation of chilis meeting sphincter at 50mph and those who have suffered say it is unpleasant in the extreme.

The following areas are good for Indian food in London:

Southall - Punjabi area but a good Sri Lankan cafe on the way to the Broadway from the station. Justifiably famous - and you will come back with kitsch items. Trains from Paddington every 20 minutes, in Zone 4 so a £4 travelcard'll sort you.

Wembley - Gujarati and East African Asian community. Great big long market to rival Southall's.

Tooting - Gujarati area with many veggie places, eg. Kastoori and Shree Krishna. Kate knows more than I do.

Brick Lane: Bangladeshi community. The places advertising Bangladeshi authenticity are really good, there's one next to Aladin and Nazrul. My favourites are Shalamar Halal and Sweet and Spicy.

Whitechapel: Pakistani and Bangladeshi. AMAZING kebabs at Tayyab and Lahore Kebab.

Forest Gate: Large Pakistani community.

Drummond Street: Behind Euston station. Bangladeshi area with Bhel Poori places.

Everyone recommending Rasa and Rasa Samudra is spot on, and Keralan food (which both are) is rarer than it oughter be.
