Large-sized Frozen Pizza in Urban Areas: Why?

Isn't takeout or order-in about the same price and much much much better tasting? I can see having a small one for a cheap snack, but a full-sized frozen pizza is baffling. & if you live somewhere where you can't get good pizza delivered, you really ought to move somewhere better.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 29 September 2003 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Frozen pizzas are about 5-6 bucks. For a non-shit delivery pizza, ie not Pizza Hut, Papa John's, etc, it'd be almost 3 times that much. I get frozen cheese pizzas and put fresh onions, peppers, and whatever other veggies I have that would be good on it. Much tastier than any cheap delivery pizza.
Also, all the places stop delivering at about 11, so a frozen pizza can come in handy around midnight on a Saturday.

oops (Oops), Monday, 29 September 2003 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

B-b-b-but I like Papa John's!!!

adaml (adaml), Monday, 29 September 2003 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

because something like a digiorno is 5 bucks total for a pretty big pizza and you can have it in like 25 minutes at 4am?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 29 September 2003 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

what is a Digiorno?

i have to admit you fellows are talking sense here.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 29 September 2003 20:56 (twenty-two years ago)

or if you're in most major Canadian cities, you can just walk a block or two down the street and get a huge yet kinda dry mediocre slice for pocket change.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 29 September 2003 20:56 (twenty-two years ago)

A Digiorno is one of those big supermarket frozen pizzas, innit?

adaml (adaml), Monday, 29 September 2003 20:58 (twenty-two years ago)

And Papa John's does not exist in Canada.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 29 September 2003 21:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Domino's = anti-abortionists.

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Monday, 29 September 2003 21:22 (twenty-two years ago)

(however the politics of all other pizza, frozen or delivered, I don't know)

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Monday, 29 September 2003 21:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't that no longer true about Domino's? Or am I thinking of another boycott that has lasted too long?

Chris P (Chris P), Monday, 29 September 2003 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

i dunno abt dominos but chik-fil-a still gives money to anti-choice and 'white rights' groups

trife (simon_tr), Monday, 29 September 2003 21:43 (twenty-two years ago)

fuck womens rights though, their chicken is off the fkn chain

trife (simon_tr), Monday, 29 September 2003 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Are they open on Sunday now?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 29 September 2003 22:32 (twenty-two years ago)

never!

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 29 September 2003 22:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I fukking love some chic-fil-a too

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 29 September 2003 22:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I love Celeste. I buy like 10 at a time

Vic (Vic), Monday, 29 September 2003 22:39 (twenty-two years ago)

If you're not boycotting Domino's because they're nutjob anti-woman zealots, do it because they charge almost 20 bucks for gummy dough covered in ketchup.

I love frozen pizza. Red Baron makes a pretty good one. And yes, it's all about price. To get a large pizza around here, it's usually around 16-18 dollars. And then you have to tip, so there goes a whole twenty. A twenty dollar bill will buy a lot of beer, man.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Monday, 29 September 2003 22:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Domino's still funds a lot of far-right conservative Catholic groups and charities, plus their pizza is terrible.

Nicolars (Nicole), Monday, 29 September 2003 22:54 (twenty-two years ago)

And not only is it really expensive in London but it's really small!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 29 September 2003 23:01 (twenty-two years ago)

the noid = eric rudolph

trife (simon_tr), Monday, 29 September 2003 23:01 (twenty-two years ago)

digiorno's good frozen pizza and I like those tombstone thin crusts, although it helps that they're like two dollars at super walmart.

domino's is awful awful awful, although a philly cheese steak pizza is tempting

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 29 September 2003 23:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't keep frozen pizza, but mainly this is because there is a pizza joint 5 blocks from my house which delivers until 6 am. At which point they sensibly close for two hours and then start again (!!)

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 29 September 2003 23:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Ally, that would drive me crazy! If I lived near there I would be able to think of nothing but pizza for those two hours.

Paul Eater (eater), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 01:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I know! Now that I posted that I have been thinking about what I might do if I needed a pizza at 7am! I've actually been contimplating running to Food Emporium and picking up a Red Baron "just in case".

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 01:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Since all the frozen cheapies went to self-rising crusts (which tend to taste strange, in my limited experience), I stick with Puck's and California Pizza Kitchen, especially nice when they're on sale.

nickn (nickn), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 01:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Also the ones at Trader Joe's that are made in Italy are great, and as cheap as the crap ones in the supermarkets. They have about 5 different varieties - olive and goat cheese, all veg, gorgonzola and pear, and I forget the rest.

nickn (nickn), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 01:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Because those "McCain's International" Sicilian style and Mexican pizzas (only about 6.99 CDN) are actually better tasting than most delivery pizzas around here. If you like thin/crispy crust pizzas anyway.

Kim (Kim), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 01:25 (twenty-two years ago)

KIM YOU LIVE IN TORONTO DON'T YOU? YOU ARE TALKING CRAZY! gigi's? Papa ceo's? Massimo's? La Pizza on King St? Vs. MCCAIN'S!?!?!

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 13:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Make own pizza. Freeze spare dough for future pizza. Approx £1.

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Here's a pic of the frozen pizza in my freezer right now:

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

That one has 3 kinds of peppers, chicken, and black beans of all things. Hella good. On sale $6 (US).

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 13:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, the Freschetta Vegetable Primavera ones are great (alfredo sauce!).

I like Tombstone frozen pizzas with added basil, tomatoes and cheese.

There also aren't very many late-night delivery places around here. Domino's is the worst of the whole commercial pizza lot, although you can usually get a large carryout for like $5.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 13:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Fine fine - yes me talk crazy. It's still more than edible and also yeah, cheap + easy.

What's the pizza equivalent of Mr Pong's Awesome Jumbo Eggroll? (note - this is not a riddle)

Kim (Kim), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 02:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't understand the appeal of frozen pizzas. Well, I can if I don't think of them as being pizzas. More like frozen round cheesy things. I like the Red Baron.

I'm Passing Open Windows (Ms Laura), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 02:44 (twenty-two years ago)

TRADER JOES, the best frozen.

half jack, Wednesday, 1 October 2003 20:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Trader Joe's pizzas are small, though. It bums me out. Although I guess it's better to consume 1,000 calories in one sitting than 2,000, huh?

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 21:57 (twenty-two years ago)

ten years pass...

fat times, in which this thread had its day

even the frozen pizza prices at my supermarket are looking pretty pricey now! and they dip down and up. like the manufacturers are unusually exposed to tomato crop shortages or something.

j., Sunday, 16 March 2014 20:38 (eleven years ago)

Frozen pizzas are good, a whole different beast than a regular pizza that you get from a restaurant. It's a craving I get. I add lots of extra salt to it.

Jeff, Sunday, 16 March 2014 22:06 (eleven years ago)

I could fuck up some frozen pizza back in the days of my youth but now every time I try one I'm like "no dude you are too old for this shit"

(or if you must, "data") (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Sunday, 16 March 2014 22:22 (eleven years ago)

i put hot sauce and black pepper on mine. it gets into the tomato sauce.

sometimes i put spinach on it.

or whatever.

j., Sunday, 16 March 2014 22:33 (eleven years ago)

i got a couple whole foods brand frozen pizzas when i was too busy and tired to cook due to a work thing a month or so ago and i felt it was a great success!

sent from my butt (harbl), Sunday, 16 March 2014 22:35 (eleven years ago)

Bought an Annie's frozen pizza (from the natural aisle). It looked really weird. Like the cheese melted funny or something. Tasted alright though, but then I covered it with Parmesan, oregano, garlic powder and crushed red pepper flakes.

how's life, Monday, 17 March 2014 09:32 (eleven years ago)

vacum sealed fresh pizzas = best of both worlds

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Monday, 17 March 2014 16:27 (eleven years ago)

The original premise of this thread is baffling. If I watch for buy one get one free sales, I can get two of my favorite frozen pizzas (Green Mill) for about 9 bucks.

I have convinced my wife, who is a pretty healthy eater, that these are okay as an occasional bad-for-you treat, negating the reason for Annie's, imo. I only eat about 1/3 of the pie, with steamed broccoli or similar on the side.

I add lots of extra salt to it.

^^^ haha, deathwish.
