Or maybe you are already grown up? Are you happy with what you do? What dreams do you pursue? What's your dream vocation? We'll make it I swear!

jel, Friday, 28 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I Wanna Rock. (ROCK!) Rock. (ROCK!)

Seriously, though.. I'll fully admit if I could make a great living out of being a rock star, I'd drop everything and do it in a second. Obviously, I'd try to avoid making all the bad cliche financial decisions that are so common with superstars these days... which actually brings up a good question: is it even possible anymore to become huge without making some sort of great financial sacrifice?

At this point, though, I'm busy making mix CD-Rs and doing electronic and guitar/drone music (not necessarily separate or combined mind you). And even though I'm happy with my full-time job right now, part of me wishes I could just stay home all day and make music.

Brian MacDonald, Friday, 28 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm grown up and immature all at once. Yay me! I never had any specific *plan* for my life, which is probably all for the good. Library work is fun enough, I get time to write and listen to music, etc. It suits my fairly lazy nature.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 28 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Cool Ned! I've got a library job interview next month!...

I want to make music and films. And do a PHd and become an academic.

jel, Friday, 28 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I want to have no obligations, and then I want to travel, read, make music, study everything, and talk to all sorts of people. The alternative is living in a self-sufficient commune after years of philosophical and anthropological study.

Maria, Friday, 28 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And do a PHd and become an academic.

A gentle Word of Warning from one who has gone down that road -- you should only be a grad student for one of two reasons:

1) You can afford to be there and don't care what you do later (this was my course, as I had a four-year fellowship and otherwise just bopped along).

2) You cannot see yourself doing *anything* but being an academic later in life.

If you're not set on either one of these paths, you will go nuts.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 28 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Like Ned: ideally, to combine library work and writing. I'd like to actually get paid for writing on a more regular basis than I do now, though.

Robin Carmody, Friday, 28 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

1) You can afford to be there and don't care what you do later. 2) You cannot see yourself doing *anything* but being an academic later in life.

Therein lies the beauty of a fiction MFA.

Nitsuh, Friday, 28 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I want to curate exhibitions in the sacred white gallery space of my dreams. I feel this dream getting closer every minute, I have even sort of started.

rainy, Friday, 28 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Honorable Tadeusz M. Suchodolski, the first Polish-American U.S. Supreme Court Justice!

And I am smarter than Clarence Thomas!

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Friday, 28 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I wanna be a pop star

Mike Hanle y, Saturday, 29 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

no, it's "i want to be a pop icon"

Maria, Saturday, 29 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I want to be a Journalist. Hang on I already am. I want to be a bigger and better Journalist than I am now, the sky is the limit where my ambition and plans are concerned. A pop icon would be nice too though for a year or two.

Ronan, Saturday, 29 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I want to be a poet . a poet that makes money at it. ( While were shooting for the moon, i also want world peace)

anthony, Saturday, 29 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I want to be the next Tom Paulin. Not a poet, you see, but a miserable bastard that turns up on telly and dismisses everything as rubbish. That would be FAN-FUCKING-TASTIC!

DG, Saturday, 29 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm bored with wanting to be a popstar. It's too hard to do when you've pulled all the muscles in your back and can't walk. I want to be an illustrator. Like Aubrey Beardsley or Amano. When I'm finished copying freaking CDs for my popstar dayjob, I'm going to put together my illustrating portfolio and get on with my real passion. When I was a kid I wanted to write novels that said "Illustrated By The Author". But then I read the Herriott novels and decided I wanted to be a vet. And then my mum somehow read that that meant I should be a doctor, and set me on that path until my life was saved by rock'n'roll and fell into the popstar thing. But is it stupid that I actually *like* illustrating?

Kate the Saint, Saturday, 29 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No it's not Kate. Illustrating is a fine thing.

My answer (duh): philosopher.

Josh, Saturday, 29 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I never know what to say when people ask me what I want to do when I grow up because growing up is the one thing I've never wanted to do.

OK, that's the glib, meaningless aphorism answer out of the way.

Now for the real answer: I HAVE NO IDEA

jamesmichaelward, Saturday, 29 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I want to be a popstar programmer, or a superstar DJ programmer. Or the classical soloist programmer. And I was well on my way until those bastards laid me off. I would wave my scrotum at them in disdain, but some people like that sort of thing.

Dan Perry, Saturday, 29 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The world needs me on the stage. I shoudl host the grammys

Mike Hanle y, Saturday, 29 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I want to start a Skid Row tribute band.

jel, Saturday, 29 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If you actually do that, Jel, I will hunt you down and shave your head.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 29 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

curious

Mike Hanle y, Saturday, 29 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Anyone who doesn't know of me by now is doomed to be crushed under the wheel of history, so if you've read this then you're saved.

dave q, Saturday, 29 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I want to win the lottery and go hippie style and buy a ranch up in the rocky mountains and raise sheep.

Oh and maybe write a bit while I'm doing that. And grow my hair long and wear big wooly sweaters and get laugh lines.

Mandee, Saturday, 29 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

When I grow up I'm going to listen to Second Edition on repeat forever. Why? Because it's the best album anyone's made, and when my sober head finally realises this there really will be no point in doing anything else again ever.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Saturday, 29 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i wanna be alive.

Geoff, Sunday, 30 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ned, so you don't want to be Dave 'the Snake' Sabbo then? :)

jel, Sunday, 30 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

oh yeah, jel pulled it out. ;)

jess, Sunday, 30 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i want to be a forest ranger.

alix, Monday, 1 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I want to be an evil Overlord or Supremo, ruthlessly crushing the spirits of my minions with my incessant orders and demands.

Either that or a writer...

Nicole, Monday, 1 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I wanna be a mutha-fuckin' hustla. Gonna axe somebody...

(name the album for bonus points)

JM, Tuesday, 2 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't know. It is safe to say, though, that not one person in the history of my glorious profession ever wanted to be a market researcher when they grew up.

Growing up would be a fucking start, come to think of it.

Tom, Tuesday, 2 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'd really appreciate it if you would tell me. Please.

Ally C, Tuesday, 2 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Thursday, 11 March 2004 20:45 (twenty-one years ago)

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 11 March 2004 20:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I want to run the show, but not be accountable for it.
I want to work hard, but at my leisure.

What job would that be? That's the one I want.

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 11 March 2004 20:46 (twenty-one years ago)

i want to be a vaguely directionless transient like all my friends!

Ian Johnson (orion), Thursday, 11 March 2004 22:25 (twenty-one years ago)

i want to sit around and discuss ideas, filter the good from the bad, then work to bring them to fruition. for me, there's nothing better than seeing what once was only a simple concept become tangible and then work hard to bring said idea to market. for ten years now i've been working for other people and for the first time in my life i feel like i'm on the cusp of making it on my own. so that's it, there is no other way, entrepreneurship is the only thing that will keep me satisfied.

metfigga (metfigga), Thursday, 11 March 2004 22:51 (twenty-one years ago)

sgs (sgs), Friday, 12 March 2004 00:19 (twenty-one years ago)

When I was a little kid, I was at a hotel with my parents and we walked past the laundry room, where the maids were talking, smoking, and drinking Coke. I was captivated, and announced then and there that I wanted to be a hotel maid when I grew up. They way things are going now, it may very well happen.

kirsten (kirsten), Friday, 12 March 2004 00:40 (twenty-one years ago)

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Friday, 12 March 2004 08:18 (twenty-one years ago)

One day at break time nobody wanted to play with me. I started to cry. Mrs Chesney, one of the dinner ladies came up to me and asked what was wrong. "I haven't got any friends!" I sobbed. "I'll be your friend" said Mrs Chesney. From that moment I wanted to be a dinner lady. Then when I was twelve I decided I'd like to be Kate Adie.

Ask For Janice (thatgirl), Friday, 12 March 2004 18:23 (twenty-one years ago)

actually, seriously, after seeing the movie BIG in like 4th grade I think I decided I wanted to be a TOY executive like Tom Hanks is in the movie. BECAUSE THEY WERE LIKE COMEDIANS & BUSINESS WOMEN IN ONE.

mandee, Friday, 12 March 2004 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I am a dull and simple lad
Cannot tell water from champagne
and I have never met the Queen
And I wish I could have all he has got -
I wish I could be like David Watts
And when I lie on my pillow at night
I dream I could fight like David Watts
And lead the school team to victory
Take my exams and pass the lot

He is the head boy at the school
He is the captain of the team
His is so gay and fancy free
And I wish I could have all the money he's got
I wish I could be like David Watts

And all the girls in the neighbourhood
Try to go out with David Watts
The try their best but can't succeed
For he is of pure and noble creed

TOMBOT, Friday, 12 March 2004 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

seven years pass...

Phew, thank God I didn't become an academic. Or start a Skid Row tribute band. Should have maybe not taken so long to figure things out, but at least that feeling of it being too late has gone, for good I hope.
