It is urgent and key that I know.

Squid ink is the nectar of the gods.

Whatever it tastes like, it should not be put on a fucking pizza.

I've had squid ink pasta. It tasted amazingly like regular pasta.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

It tastes like fish. Isn't that always the way?

Mark C (Mark C), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

it doesn't really taste of anything - in theory it should have a kind of iodine-like flavour, but in pasta not at all...

I'd imagine it would taste like squid pee.

In 'squid in its own ink' it is made into a kind of sauce involving onions and (I think) breadcrumbs. So I suppose it tastes vaguely oniony, but the accompanying rice is often garliced up to the nines. The 'ink' itself comes in a little sachet a bit like those whatchamacallits to stop stuff getting damp. I suspect it is only a distant cousin of the stuff squids squirt out.

my one taste of squid ink pasta on my birthday left me with what must have beena very unhappy expression as the owner immediateley offered to make a substitution for me. Remember it having a bitterness that was quite unpleasant. Also instantly left me with black lips and tongue.

two years pass...
I was similarly disappointed by a squid ink tapas thing.

I've only had it in Venice, cuttlfish ink to be exact. It's briney but not annoyingly so and it's quite good on pasta.

I've only had it in Venice, cuttlefish ink to be exact. I got the worst food poisoning of my life and my vom was black as pitch.

Mädchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

That must have been captivatingly romantic, Mädchen.

M. White (Miguelito), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 20:23 (twenty years ago)

It was quite something.

I was pleasantly surprised since I was tasting it out of a sense of duty (when in Venice, eat the Venetian specialties) and I ended up quite liking it.
