ok,so i need to get some sort of job
obviously the tedium of work would be greatly relieved by access to the internet, but what sort of jobs do people have that allow them to spend all day posting to ilx?

robin (robin), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

System Administration. The goal of the system administrator is to make their job as easy as possible. If you are doing the job correctly you have plenty of free time.

Dale the Titled (cprek), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Editorial Assistant--as far as anyone knows, I'm either doing research, fact-checking, or uh, compiling events listings. As far as anyone here knows, I haven't done a lick of work since like March.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)

You'll find that pretty much any job ever that allows you internet access will allow for you to spend at least an hour per day of downtime fucking around.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)

"Pretty much" /= "all", I'm pretty sure military assassins sent to Columbia to sniper drug lords don't have much 'net access but by and large...teachers obviously wouldn't because there'd be no reason to give you access, you're meant to be standing up front teaching (this apparently doesn't apply to college teachers)

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 20:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Cyber porno actresses: with the Net such a massive marketing tool, you have to be on the Net for your Webcam to work, obviously.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah but you have to spend all day trying to turn on men who usually wank off to nigella lawson, so not much time for ilx there

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 20:24 (twenty-two years ago)

what are you trying to tell us, Nichole?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 20:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 20:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Robin are you on a year out or eh more permanent hiatus? If the latter hard luck, if the former you might have the right idea. I did an office job in the latter part of the summer where I checked the net all day, I think if you just try and sort some sort of basic office assistant type job you might be ok.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 20:30 (twenty-two years ago)

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 20:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Horace, I obviously have the wrong edit-assist job. All my posts are flicked out surreptitiously, with copy waiting by me elbows.

Management knows not to annoy programmers. Programmers also learn not to annoy management. We get web access they get arbitrary and impossible deadlines.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 21:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I do have broadband access in my room. For example we have to enter our grades online. I download study guides for texts I teach. i can access testing materials from the state education agency. And, if I can ever get the right cables for the ancience computer I have, the kiddos will get online to do research, etc.

wow! real productive uses for the internet! ;)

A Girl Named Sam (thatgirl), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 21:47 (twenty-two years ago)

My job allows virtually uninterupted internet access (gets tricky when I'm expected to DO things), sleeping in until midday quite often, sitting around half dressed, and doing very little very often.

I'm not telling you what it is though. It's my job. It's not a teacher though, despite the description.

Badger (Badger), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 02:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Damnit Badger, how did you know I show up to school half-dressed at noon?

A Girl Named Sam (thatgirl), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 03:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Surely the apogee would be "internet analyst" and obergruppenfuhrer of a phalanx of interweb sites bent on world domination?

Mark C (Mark C), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 15:07 (twenty-two years ago)

The goal of the system administrator is to make their job as easy as possible. If you are doing the job correctly you have plenty of free time.

I must be doing something wrong then.

(the boss was shouting at me earlier. "if I was in your position I'd be working my arse off every hour of the day trying to fix this problem! Why won't you accept responsibility for it!" His problem is "orders through our websites are down; there's no obvious reason why; therefore it must be a technical problem that Caitlin hasn't found." He also claimed that he'd found an error message that our website was throwing up, but was mysteriously unable to reproduce it when I was there. My response was that when I'm trying to solve a problem I first have to work out what it is; and when i'm trying to diagnose a problem I sit quietly and think about it, rather than frantically shouting at people.)

(oh, and he shouted at me *today* for taking 75 minutes for my lunch hour *yesterday*. My reponse was that I was stood in the bank queue for half an hour paying in my paycheque, and that AS HE KNEW VERY WELL I was desperately skint at the time and needed to get the cheque cashed as soon as possible. He knew very well because I'd spent half the morning trying to explain to him that he had been very much mistaken when he'd told the accountant that I should have SIX HUNDRED FUCKING QUID docked from my pay this month.)

48-hour Internet outage plunges nation into productivity

Bunch of suddenly frightened workers, faced with hours of backlog? Must have been praying for the super-administrator to fix the problem.

(In a silly mood today, apologies)

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

It helps to have a boss who don't know nuffin bout no computers. I think my boss honestly thinks I'm hard at work ALL The time just because he sees me typing so much.

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

he sees me typing so
much.

yo, second that!

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 18:31 (twenty-two years ago)

You'll be hearing a lot of, "Dude close the window! She's looking!"

Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

And, woohoo, after the rant I posted yesterday above, I now have to have a Disciplinary Hearing about it all. Why is it that I have to be disciplined because my boss can't control his temper?

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 2 October 2003 10:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Christ, that's awful. Bad luck.

Working at an ISP! I mean hell - internet is what we do, yo. A lot of ISPs put blocks on most websites mind you, especially on their helpdesks - but in my job I need access to various websites for Actual Work Stuff (looking up buisiness numbers, applying for domain names, etc) so like... posting to LJ and here doesn't really look that different. I hope.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 3 October 2003 02:15 (twenty-two years ago)

It turns out the Discipline I had to go through today wasn't connected with the above rant at all: it was because I've been reading ILX, reading personal email, and generally doing non-work-related things at work. So, bye-bye ILX for a bit.

(until I get my net connection at home up again, at least)
