Can you teach me about NFL?

My flatmate just bought John Madden 2004 for the X-Box and I want to beat him to bits. I know rudimentaries (the down system & stuff) but beyond that it's all really a maze of tactics and stats. What can you teach me about American Football? Plus who are the best team to go currently? Who are the best all-time team? I keep going the '95 Cowboys but I can remember HStencil telling me once that no-one likes the cowboys.

Best team to go for in Madden 2004 is 86 Bears. Or recent team, the St. Louis Rams, Tampa Bay Bucaneers or Patriots. Run the ball a lot right up the middle, wear the defense down. Then go for a pass. Utilize the tight end on short pass routes for 1st downs. When it comes to defense choose a 3-4 defense, take control of a defensive lineman, otherwise you'll mess up the play if you use a linebacker or a ss-cb. Usually on defense I choose to use the "Ask Madden" feature. It makes it easier.

Yes, just be the 85/86 Bears and just give the ball to that #34 [walter payton - my childhood hero by the way] and then you press the little joystick buttons to make him run forwards/sideways trying to get to the goal but avoiding all those bad guys in shirts that are not your color. easy.

'80 Oilers goddamnit!

ryan (ryan), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 15:02 (twenty-one years ago) link

In all Madden games the bias is towards the players with the high-agression, hard-assed histories -- Jim Brown, Unitas, The Fridge -- coz Madden Himself likes them so.

Find the biggest old school team (the old Browns teams and the Steelers of the 70's tend to be crushers). Run the ball. Go for the Blitz. High step into the end-zone. ALWAYS.

ModJ, Wednesday, 1 October 2003 15:11 (twenty-one years ago) link

I think the late 60's or early 70's Dolphins are also PHAT. Larry Czonka

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 15:14 (twenty-one years ago) link

Well, come to think of it, ALL the all-time teams are great -- that's the point. The All Madden Team tho... yikes...

ModJ, Wednesday, 1 October 2003 15:16 (twenty-one years ago) link

use the run to set up the pass and vice versa

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 16:16 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm always the '90s Bills in all those games. I don't know why I still haven't learned my lesson.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 16:20 (twenty-one years ago) link

Is OJ in any of these games. Now that would be a treat.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 16:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

if I had madden 2004 I'd be the 2003 whatshouldabeen falcons all up in there

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 16:25 (twenty-one years ago) link

I don't know how many old teams they got - those oj bills teams might not've made the cut

Take it from me, anyone but the Cowboys! Have you got one of the 80s Redskins squads with the Hogs on there?

daria g (daria g), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 16:27 (twenty-one years ago) link

Vick is tight in the game. Fast as hell, can't pass for shit though. I created my own team the Worcester Slayers, I've won 4 straight super bowls. I rule.

Oh yes, early 80's Skins are nice too. Riggins, Theisman, Art Monk...

madden 2004 ownz me. falcons are killer! i'm 8-0!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 16:40 (twenty-one years ago) link

but ya gotta trade warrick dunn early for a better wr (tj duckett's a BEAST!).

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 16:43 (twenty-one years ago) link

don't pick Donovan McNabb as your qb, he's like overrated and the media just like him 'cause he's black.

what was I saying?

hstencil, Wednesday, 1 October 2003 17:25 (twenty-one years ago) link

whoops, you didn't see this tag:

< /limbaugh >

hstencil, Wednesday, 1 October 2003 17:28 (twenty-one years ago) link

but can the 86 bears do the superbowl shuffle?
man-they kicked the patriots to the floor that year.
thats about the extent of my football knowledge.

kephm, Wednesday, 1 October 2003 17:39 (twenty-one years ago) link

god limbaugh's an idiot

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 17:58 (twenty-one years ago) link

yeah, I know. Today on his radio program he was taking the 'well I touched a nerve, I must be doing something right' line, as if that makes what he said right.

(I don't mind anyone calling anyone overrated, but McNabb has delivered two divisional championships to the Eagles in two seasons. To say he's overrated, because of his skin or otherwise, completely misses that he's already established himself as a great quarterback, period.)

hstencil, Wednesday, 1 October 2003 18:01 (twenty-one years ago) link

The ratings for the pregame show are the highest in 10 years.
Maybe he should run for president.

kephm, Wednesday, 1 October 2003 18:07 (twenty-one years ago) link

I like how he's hiding behind 'I thought we had free speech in this country' - noone's talking about throwing you in fucking jail rush! calling you an idiot /= violating your free speech. the one good thing about him being on espn is watching michael irvin (MICHAEL IRVIN!) outsmart him, I can only hope it causes republican viewers to think 'jesus christ if michael irvin is running rings around this guy maybe I shouldn't take what he says so seriously'.

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 18:08 (twenty-one years ago) link

They should have him debate Joe Montana next! If Montana can outsmart him, then there is no hope left for Limbaugh.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 18:12 (twenty-one years ago) link

If I weren't on a 49er boycott, I'd say the '84 or '89 9ers.

Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 19:05 (twenty-one years ago) link

And if you were playing Madden '95, I would say do a sweep to the right (a running play towards the sideline), run directly to the sideline, then turn upfield. Instant TD. On defense, you'd go 4-3, find Grizzly Attack, pick one of the two middle guys on the defensive line, proceed to sack QB>

Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 19:07 (twenty-one years ago) link

dan marino? had a nice clean spiral

kephm, Wednesday, 1 October 2003 19:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

Offense - Get the team with the fastest running back you can, and a decent passing game. I don't think that the numbers matter as much for quarterbacks and receivers - anyone in the 80s will be servicable.

Defense - I worry mostly about the secondary and an All-Pro linebacker or two (3-4). Just enough up front to discourage the run.

I'm doing the owner mode, it's 2016 - I've won four Super Bowls and played in four more (I almost never play the actual games). I moved the Baltimore Ravens to Manhattan, and whenever my older guys start asking for too much money or are on the verge of having their skills decrease, I trade them off for a high pick. Always under the salary cap by a lot, and as long as they don't go all at once, I do OK.

The best Madden games (as mentioned in Page 2 guy's column at espn.com), were the years you could hit after the whistle and injure guys. I like the occasional "career-ending" injury to a player, but I've never seen it happen to a real-life guy. I guess the NFLPA didn't want them jinxing players.

haha - rush limbaugh wanted to part of the football world so much he even abused pain pills! (lesson learned: do not fuck with philly)

and since the jets are 0-4, and i'm getting pissed with the giants, i gotta find me a new "favorite" team to root for ... it might as well be the iggles!

not only is rush gone from espn but wait'll you see the ny daily news tomorrow!

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 2 October 2003 04:18 (twenty-one years ago) link

and re fatfuck limpblob: i don't like to kick a man when he's down (the news breaking about him popping more pills than Elvis is just the icing on the cake o' shit he's eating this week -- are yer sources the same as mine mr. blount hee hee hee), but i make an exception in his case. even his resignation wasn't an "apology," and his track record of saying things that were at the very least "questionable" re race, he deserves no benefit of the doubt.

so fuck 'im, and i hope that chelsea clinton is having herself a nice long schadenfreude-filled laugh at his expense.

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 2 October 2003 04:29 (twenty-one years ago) link

oh yeah this thread's topic. prob. the greatest team ever is the '71 miami dolphins (or whatever year it was when they went undefeated).

Little Big Macher (llamasfur), Thursday, 2 October 2003 04:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

The early-mid '90s Cowboys could give a lot of teams a run for their money. (I hate to admit that, I've never liked the Cowboys)

Aikman, Irvin, Smith at their absolute prime, big OL, very-good D. Comparing teams from different eras in the NFL is kinda pointless (even moreso than baseball) - guys are so much bigger and more athletic today.

i will try to make it a point to listen to Howard Stern tomorrow ... Stern despises Limbaugh (he used to call him "the big fat pumpkinhead" and had his fans call Limbaugh's show to taunt him).

Asked about Limbaugh's comments, Eagles defensive end N.D. Kalu said: "He speaks well, he's well-read, but he's an idiot."

well, two outta three ain't bad (i dispute the "well-read" part).

howard dean giving tad a shoutout via calling for rush's head: "Rush Limbaugh's comment this week about Philadelphia Jets quarterback Donovan McNabb is unacceptable."
