Phantom Tollbooth would've been one of my favorites, but somehow -- to the amazement of many -- not only did I not see the movie until I was in my 20s, I didn't even know there was one. Not only one of my favorite books as the time, though, but one of the most formative.

Bad News Bears, geez, how could I leave a baseball movie out? (That's sort of like Poltergeist in that way, except that mostly I watch it now and think, "Christ, I saw this when I was five? There's no way they'd put this stuff in now and let five year olds see it! There aren't even any fart jokes!")

Jaws, which i caught on cable when i wasnt supposed to, probably had the biggest effect on me. i still have a bad phobia of sharks, even in swimming pools!

Embarrassing admission of the day: When I was a young child, I really enjoyed watching Chevy Chase comedies. I was so thrilled whenever we would go to see a movie starring Chevy Chase, because I thought he was the funniest guy around. OMG.
Interesting admission of the day: I watched a fair number of R-rated films when I was a young child, as well. I remember watching Wall Street and Fatal Attraction when they were first released to the theaters, and I also remember watching every single one of the Lethal Weapon films when they were first released. These R-rated films held my attention much more than an animated Disney film would. (So why am I so straitlaced now, hm? *wink*)

Amen, s1utsky, amen!
Dee! Damn it yes! There was a film buzzing around the back of my mind hissing pick meee, pick meee and of course it was labyrinth!
Matt, this tells me that you are a Man of Good Taste. ;) No, really, how can anyone born from around 1968 or so onward not love Labyrinth?
Anthony, thank you for reminding me of E.T. I was also obsessed with this film, maybe because at the time I just thought of it as a magical film. I think I ended up watching it about 10 times in the theaters, certainly over the course of the movie's two big releases. I love how Henry Thomas is from around here -- hey, he went to East Central HS, which is a public HS for regular people, mostly from rural areas! I also love another film Thomas appeared in, Cloak & Dagger, because I recognize so many of the places in that movie! Such a rare treat!

How can you NOT love a movie that features David Bowie (in tights, no less), a talking blue haired worm, biting fairies, goblins and a bird as a hat? (And about 500000 other things).
I always wanted that dress, and for someone to say things like "How you turn my world, you precious thing" to me.
Neither have happened to date.
― luna (luna.c), Thursday, 2 October 2003 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)
Yeah, I liked that a lot as a kid too. I think I was really young when I first saw it, but for some reason It stuck with me. maybe beacuse it was black and white and I felt older and more sophisticated watching it.

More young girl movie love:
Overboard and Throw Momma From The Train, which I remember because my mom and I would go to the movies together and she would almost always choose movies she too would enjoy. Beverly Hills Cop, because I thought it was really funny and exciting at the same time. Grease -- I'd nearly forgotten about that! That and Girls Just Wanna Have Fun were both de rigueur video rentals. And I loved Just One Of The Guys, The War Of The Roses, and Weird Science -- OMG, I'd nearly forgotten about Weird Science, as well! And hey, wait a sec, I was still a child back in 1989, duh! So Steel Magnolias gets thrown into the pile as well -- "you're too twisted for color TV"!
Wow, this thread was a major memory jogger.
