How long has Margaret Thatcher got to live?

Right, so Charles Moore is quitting as editor of the Telegraph (that was actually going to be the thread title, but who in their right mind would click on that?) in order to write a long-planned authorised Thatcher biography. According to the Guardian today, the book (which is to be published only after her death), the book has been bought forward due to 'concerns' over her health.

So is the Iron Lady on her last legs or what?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 2 October 2003 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

The reasoning behind this thread is that just the other day I was thinking about how much I'm dreading the day she actually dies (and it can't be that far away). More to the point, I'm dreading the torrent of praise and revisionism and "weren't the 80s great?" rubbish that will follow, coupled with a possible nationwide swing to the right. In fact, perhaps the best eventuality for the Tory party is for her to pop off just before the next election...

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 2 October 2003 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Revisionism? Tut tut!

We all know that all the right people were squarely behind Maggie. The only people who objected to her policies were the people who don't count. So, we shan't count them shall we? Right! Rather as they attend to these matters in Florida and on the Supreme Court of the United States, where they do these counting sorts of things correctly and by the book.

Aimless, Thursday, 2 October 2003 17:47 (twenty-one years ago)

two things, what are the odds on TB called her a 'great woman' when she dies? I'd also like the odds on him using the word exceptional.

Second thing, where are we going to hold the party the night she dies?

Ed (dali), Thursday, 2 October 2003 18:16 (twenty-one years ago)

You forgot "courageous" and "with integrity", Ed.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 2 October 2003 18:19 (twenty-one years ago)

The 80s were great

the pinefox, Thursday, 2 October 2003 18:44 (twenty-one years ago)

SEE! IT'S STARTED ALREADY!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 2 October 2003 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

He's being saying that since 1978.

Ally C (Ally C), Thursday, 2 October 2003 19:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Robin C to thread.

Ed, I don't think you can deny she was an exceptional woman. Not that being exceptional has much to do with being great.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Thursday, 2 October 2003 20:56 (twenty-one years ago)

what an irony it would be if she outlived Callaghan and / or Heath ... I'd rather like that, myself.

robin carmody (robin carmody), Friday, 3 October 2003 04:58 (twenty-one years ago)

the ideal scenario for me is, in this order:

Thatcher dies
Britain joins euro
ninety-something-year-old Heath dies, happy

robin carmody (robin carmody), Friday, 3 October 2003 05:00 (twenty-one years ago)

they've begun to lionize and employ revisionism over here wr2 ronnie raygun (printing selected excerpts of his letters to his kids, to brezhnev, to someone who took him to task for ratting out actors to the House Un-American Activities Committee -- funny how any letters concerning iran-contra or central america aren't in the batch). they'll do it for maggie too, i reckon.

what's really interesting is how the retro-whitewashes of thatcher and reagan are happening simultaneously. which i chalk up to coincidence (not being conspiracy-minded, ya know).

Little Big Macher (llamasfur), Friday, 3 October 2003 05:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Blair will blatantly lard her with praise. But there'll be a more innaresting reckoning generally. I don't know that you can 'whitewash' something that so many people were involved in, ie the large number of people who voted Tory (*even* in 1992). Ideal situation:

-Argentina does her for Belgrano war crime
-She flees for sanctuary under protection of Pinochet (errm)
-NATO 'snatch squad' has to escort her to the Hague...

Enrique (Enrique), Friday, 3 October 2003 07:49 (twenty-one years ago)

The idea of this makes me happy. I am planning a big party in a flash mob kinda way where I gather with mates for an emergency FAP to toast her death. I also plan to visit her grave and pay my respects.

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 3 October 2003 08:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe we should all pledge to FAP on the day she finally dies, wherever there are Ilx0rs, in cities right across the world, in beautiful synchronicity.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 3 October 2003 08:52 (twenty-one years ago)

we'd have to invite Hefner.

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 3 October 2003 08:55 (twenty-one years ago)

NO HEFNER!

Ricardo (RickyT), Friday, 3 October 2003 08:59 (twenty-one years ago)

elvis costello, then?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 3 October 2003 09:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Dr. Robert?

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 3 October 2003 09:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Grauniad/Sindie writer Nick Lezard says he's hiring a coach to Grantham on the day of her funeral to, ah, 'pay his respects'...

Enrique (Enrique), Friday, 3 October 2003 09:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Is he? I was going to pay my respects in a bio-degradeable fashion.

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 3 October 2003 10:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Methinks the nice Mr. Lezard will also be going for the biodegradable option.

suzy (suzy), Friday, 3 October 2003 10:58 (twenty-one years ago)

three years pass...
I didn't realise that her strokes have now left her with no short-term memory (says Bernard Ingham).

Alba, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 10:43 (eighteen years ago)

That's so typically inconsiderate of Albert Hammond Jr.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 10:44 (eighteen years ago)

Neither did she. (xpost) (sorry)

StanM, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 10:48 (eighteen years ago)

That is, if it was Bernard Ingham who said it.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 10:50 (eighteen years ago)

So she can remember all the horrid things she did but can't remember where she put the sugar? I'm happy with that.

Zoe Espera, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 10:53 (eighteen years ago)

She can't remember where she put the sugar, when he's on the telly every Wednesday night!

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 10:57 (eighteen years ago)

What is this, Prime Minister day or something?

Matt DC, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 10:59 (eighteen years ago)

Lefty sticker I saw on a lamppost - "the day Maggie chokes, party in Trafalgar Square at 9pm - I'll be there!"

the next grozart, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 10:59 (eighteen years ago)

If only they could bury her legacy with her.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 11:06 (eighteen years ago)

Or set up a Dance Dance Revolution machine on her grave...

Stone Monkey, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 11:16 (eighteen years ago)

I think all the piss would short it out.

onimo, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 11:17 (eighteen years ago)

For a second I visualised the spectre of Clare Short having a piss on Thatcher's resting place.

And will rock legend ELVIS COSTELLO be as good as his word and turn up after the funeral service to TRAMP THE DIRT DOWN, and if so will his AIM be TRUE?

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 11:19 (eighteen years ago)

To be fair your aim would have to be pretty untrue for your stamping foot to miss a whole grave.

Groke, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 11:21 (eighteen years ago)

I saw that clip of her saying "Juhhst ruhjoice en thaht news" re Falklands a few times recently - it's so utterly repulsive yet amusing at the same time.

blueski, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 11:22 (eighteen years ago)

The whole 'dance/piss on her grave' thing I have not heard about anyone even half as much as with Thatcher in my life. I mean specifically the grave meme as opposed to just 'hope she dies soon' etc. tho these are common too I guess. Does anyone actually think her grave will get vandalised or this will be attempted?

blueski, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 11:24 (eighteen years ago)

Protected by 24-hour armed guard for say the first six months, I'd reckon.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 11:25 (eighteen years ago)

Oh totally. TOTALLY it'll be attempted. The policing bill for the bloody woman's grave will be enormous.

Groke, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 11:25 (eighteen years ago)

I think you'd be better off taking a hammer and a wooden stake to her funeral...Just to be on the safe side.

Stone Monkey, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 11:29 (eighteen years ago)

So our taxes will have to pay for making sure her grave is not vandalised as well as repairing it when it inevitably is.

It will be funny when members of the public start calling for her funeral to be live on TV ala George Best.

blueski, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 11:30 (eighteen years ago)

Predictable stuff:

1) There will be one mass gathering in TrafSq of a celebratory nature.
2) There will be general tutting in the press about it.
3) There will be rtcp of her grave paid for by private donation(s) (or it'll be on a inaccessible island ala diana, but with paid boat trips)

Mark G, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 11:30 (eighteen years ago)

I would support an RHCP of her grave

DJ Mencap, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 11:35 (eighteen years ago)

Having just re-watched the episode of the Simpsons were the townsfolk briefly think Burns is dead, I think I'm gonna go with a whole top hat, white tie and tails ensemble for the grave.

Noodle Vague, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 11:44 (eighteen years ago)

Alba, Wednesday, 29 October 2008 11:05 (sixteen years ago)

I think we should have a rule that Thatcher's dead threads should only be bumped when she's actually dead or at least critically ill, otherwise it's just teasing us (or do you know something?).

Cool Hand Tiller (onimo), Wednesday, 29 October 2008 11:14 (sixteen years ago)

Naah, come the day, there'll be a thread called MARGARET THATCHER ACTUALLY DEAD RIN!

Mark G, Wednesday, 29 October 2008 11:19 (sixteen years ago)

Fake Tuomas (ken c), Wednesday, 29 October 2008 11:25 (sixteen years ago)

How will it happen? While she's being given a baked bean bath by Redcar Students' Union?

Well in that case they should both be given knighthoods.
