Singing From A Different Hymn Book

I was at a wedidng earlier this summer, and one of teh hymns we had to sing was in the standard hymnbook tied to the pews. Except the Vicar had to say that it was hymn number 149 in the blue book, or hymn number 202. The song was sung with the usual lack of gusto witnessed in weddings all over the UK.

But it has only just struck me that we weren't singing from the same hymnbook. And yet you couldn't tell.

Have you ever accidentally stumbled into a disproval of management doublespeak phrase?

As a child I regularly thought outside the box.

Then, one day, they let me out. </Emo>

There is an obvious football metaphor for thinking inside the box, but this would ascribe thought processes to strikers and goalkeepers whichw ouldn't be right.

Has anyone ever cleared the final hurdle and put the ball in the back of the net, as we were once encouraged by our CEO?

I had the misfortune to study Latin to the age of 15. We'd have to read what we'd translated for homework out in class, but the speaker changed at the whim of the teacher. So you'd have to follow the text. Quite literally see if everyone 'was on the same page'. Were they? Seldom.

I touched base with a fellow clubber at Tribal Gathering, was off my fucking face for hours.

I badly need "being off your fucking face" to become managementspeak for something. Who do I have to pay?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 3 October 2003 11:45 (twenty-one years ago)

"get off our faces"=eliminate discrimination based on looks

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 3 October 2003 11:53 (twenty-one years ago)

And "touching base"?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 3 October 2003 11:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I am rubbish at playing tennis, therefore the ball is regularly in my court.

Managers are always talking about "raising the bar," meaning to make the standard more difficult to attain. But that only works if you're talking about pole-vaulting or high jumping, or hurdles. Personally, I only think in terms of limbo dancing. Raising the bar just makes it easier.
