So imagine an il* commune
what rules would we have to follow ?
Where would it be ?
Whatd would the building look like
And so on

anthony, Saturday, 29 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

there would be a bar I think

Mike Hanle y, Saturday, 29 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hanle y would have to clean the llama pen and make the pancakes.

Other than that, no rules at all! It is the Sixties, after all! Or are you with the Man, Anthony?

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Saturday, 29 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ally would bring the manics records

Geoff, Saturday, 29 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think we'd have to live in yurts. I've always wanted to have a yurt.

Ed, Saturday, 29 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Surely everyone would be passed out drunk?

DG, Saturday, 29 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

would it be completely self-sufficient? i'd like that

Maria, Saturday, 29 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like it already

Ronan, Saturday, 29 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

could we have a pond? (or at least a puddle?)

jess, Saturday, 29 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Lots of guitar pedals, they'd be every where, even if there were no guitars, you could just step on them to get rid of the urge. Alsorts of speaker arrangments, so you could finaly hear that wacko Flaming Lips album the way the band wanted to be heard...

Mr Noodles, Saturday, 29 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i would not be drunk, i would be high on caffeine and nicotine, walking aroud and bugging all the ppl trying to pass oout, asking them if they'd reformatted their identity yet.

Geoff, Saturday, 29 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't want a pond, they go dry and smell funny at the end of the summer. Why do I have this feeling I'll end up barefoot, pregnant, talking jive, washing dishes for the MC5?

Kate the Saint, Saturday, 29 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There would be noodles for everyone. Egg noodles would become the staple of everyone's diet.

Dan Perry, Saturday, 29 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sometimes we would all gather before Nick as he told us fairy tails

Mike Hanle y, Saturday, 29 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

est-style 'Attack Therapy' sessions, supervised by me

dave q, Saturday, 29 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Screw egg noodles, Ramman noodles for all. Flavour packs optional.

Mr Noodles, Saturday, 29 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I would suppervise the Herman Nitsch Style Orgies

anthony, Saturday, 29 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

except for gratuitous animal killings , anthony ;)

francesco, Saturday, 29 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Triple Sec anyone?

Mike Hanle y, Saturday, 29 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'd build a tree house so that way I could have a comfortable place to sleep.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 29 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I would be the bearded pipe-smoking pseudy-dude.

DG, Saturday, 29 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Y'mean there only gets to be one beardy pipe-smoker dude?

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Saturday, 29 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes. And I already have the pipe, but not the beard.

DG, Saturday, 29 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

shouldn't tom "weirdy beardy incognito" ewing get to be that fella then?

jess, Saturday, 29 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

He doesn't smoke, you silly boy.

DG, Saturday, 29 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

it could always be a bubble pipe. you drunken pirate.

jess, Saturday, 29 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Aaaaaaaaaar! Ye're askin' fer a keel-haulin', an' no mistake!

DG, Saturday, 29 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Could we get inflatable gloves that could be used to playfully smack people around? That would be NEET.

Dan Perry, Saturday, 29 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

would there be TV?

rainy, Sunday, 30 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

WOudl there be raisens?

Mike Hanle y, Sunday, 30 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

of course there would be raisins, as they are Natures Candy. But will there be TV? I'm only coming if theres TV.

rainy, Sunday, 30 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

We would have movies.

anthony, Sunday, 30 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yippee. I'll definitely come. But I dont want to watch "Watership Down", so please can we not have that.

rainy, Sunday, 30 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No watership dpwn i guess/

anthony, Sunday, 30 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

we could have many teevees, but before you watched it, you;d have to pull yr hippie dress up over yr head and run around shouting, "Where i come from, we have no teevee...do you have teevee for my buinghole?"

Geoff, Sunday, 30 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That sounds mildly crazed. This place is getting scary. I'm bringing a stun gun.

rainy, Sunday, 30 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Geoff will just get off on that .

anthony, Sunday, 30 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

In the winter we'd perform plays for members of the local community. In summer we'd frolic naked in the orchid. It would be in Pallet Town. There would only be one rule, and only one person would know the rule. The building would be like a light house, we'd shine our beacon of love all over the land. We would farm cotton and we'd make and sale coats.

jel, Sunday, 30 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Never trust a hippy.

stevo, Sunday, 30 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

mmmm, stun guns...yum

shouldn't we be farming hemp instead of cotton?

Geoff, Sunday, 30 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

We call it cotton, don't want no trouble from the Police!

jel, Sunday, 30 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am in love with jel's commune. I will make peach tarts.

Maria, Sunday, 30 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yr a smarty jel.

can i be an apricot tart?

Geoff, Sunday, 30 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I would bring loads of people who have nothing to do with ILE and act all like, "What?" when you all are like, "Dude, they don't belong here. They aren't one of us." Then I'd yell at everyone. Plus, I'd ration cigarettes. The building would probably be somewhere in NYC, cos I ain't leaving my apartment for this.

Ally, Sunday, 30 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like James's idea.

Couldn't we have it in West Wales, like the Incredible String Band did? I say this mainly because I was watching a film of that area from - at a guess - circa 1959 last night, and I'd love to think that, within 10 years or so, we'd saved it from those steam train drivers who all looked about 80.

Robin Carmody, Sunday, 30 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

west wales is now full of hippy comunes, no grisled old engine drivers at all

Ed, Monday, 1 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

a friend of mine lives on a commune in the West Country, it sounds like hell on earth.

Jonnie can probably give further details having been there I believe.

chris, Monday, 1 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My camp was on one of these comunes this summer. they seemed like nice old hippies to me. actually they called themselves a community which was nearer the mark as most people lived in independant dwellings, round houses, tree houses, teepees etc. Some aspects were lived communally but with more personal space than I would have expected. The aim was to be a self sufficient community rather than try to implement some kind of social model. Like us in my camong organisation all descisions taken by concensus.

Ed, Monday, 1 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

this one is called Tinkers rucksack or somesuch, do you know of it Ed?

chris, Monday, 1 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tinkers Bubble - named after a little stream or something which is there. It's ok but they don't have a telly which would be a massive pain in the arse. The best bits were the cider press and the old horse that brought logs up the hill.

Jonnie, Monday, 1 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

heard of it. the one in wales was called Brithdir Mawr

Ed, Monday, 1 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ally b etter watch it with the cigarette rationing or i'm gonna stun gun her big beotchy ass

Geoff, Monday, 1 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

surely stun gins are a product of the man, and therefore not welcome? unless you make one out of a self sustaining mouse powered dynamo or somesuch hippy nonsense.

chris, Monday, 1 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

stun guns of course not stun gins, they're an entirely different beastie

chris, Monday, 1 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Can we live in a Buckminster Fuller geodesic dome?

Samantha, Monday, 1 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

they leak

Ed, Monday, 1 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

sorry to be so down on buckminster domes but they are famous for it. however the eden project uses buckminster fuller stuctures and plastic pillows for windows and looks undeniably beautiful. Its just poor construction that makes them leaky

Ed, Monday, 1 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

that's what tarps are for.

Maria, Monday, 1 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The beard and I have parted company again and looking at this thread it seems not a moment too soon.

Tom, Monday, 1 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Although the facial-hair situation has been thrown into doubt, I'm still buying the big inflatable gloves.

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Monday, 1 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

glue the hair to the bottom of your foots

Mike Hanle y, Monday, 1 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ignore this, because I am a deeply anal pedantic bastard, but the film I mentioned upthread of West Wales was actually made in 1953. All this means is that it was c.15 years before the Incredible String Band went there rather than c.10 years, I suppose.
