I don't think the food industry is funny.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Saturday, 4 October 2003 01:26 (twenty-two years ago)

THE FOOD INDUSTRY HAS ALREADY WON

I like the pictures, especially the guy watching tv in front of a giant hamburger

The USDA may have a conflict of interest by supporting grain and sugar producers while recommending that Americans eat less carbohydrates.

(dry tone) Gee, major sections bowing to the local food lobbyists? Never saw that coming. Believe that it usually works in reverse, however.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Saturday, 4 October 2003 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

The part about the food pyramid being responsible is a red herring; I'd still say the main culprit in American obesity is saturated fat.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Saturday, 4 October 2003 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd say the main culprit is people eating too damn much.

Nicolars (Nicole), Saturday, 4 October 2003 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

but there's a difference between stuffing your face full of lettuce and stuffing your face full of ground beef and onion rings, no?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Saturday, 4 October 2003 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

But tis hard not to, Lars, when the platter servings are so damn big: a medium serving can easily fill me up, never mind Super Sizing something! People DO need to learn to eat just til they are full, though.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Saturday, 4 October 2003 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the culprits are:
1) portion sizes in virtually all restaurants out of control
2) more and more people eating out more often than they eat at home
3) utter reliance on the automobile rather than the feet for transportation and
4) a bizarre idea that what you eat, or in what combination, somehow has more of an effect on weight than the fact that most Americans eat 5 to 10 times (or more) more calories daily than they need to be healthy. People need to eat surprisingly little to sustain life--and only slightly more to stay fit.

but that's just me.

I'm now going on what I'm calling the Middle Eastern diet. I will eat nothing but falafel and hummus and baba ganouj (extra garlic, plz) and lamb kabobs and pita bread and grape leaves. Maybe I'm supporting the terrorists and maybe I'm not, but I do know this: olive oil is really good for you.

looks like some people are trying to make a buck of the bulge. I guess its ok, but at some point I hope these people find a way to get thinner, not make the world bigger. I think this demonstrates how cluless the american public is when it comes to fat loss strategies. Anyone who is fat would choose to be thin, but there aren't many voices out there telling them the REAL way to do it. Oh, theres plenty of diets, but theres not much useful advice.
