McDonald's has a new menu featuring Justin Timberlake and Tony Hawk. I'm not ready for this™!

It's an attempt to lure Ned back into the McDonalds fold.

Nicolars (Nicole), Sunday, 5 October 2003 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

www.dugg.ca

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 5 October 2003 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

the new ad for McDonalds on Launch.com scared the shit out of me.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 5 October 2003 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I fuckin' hate this ridiculous ad campaign like I've never hated a fuckin' ad campaign before.

The idiot attempt to mimic the "Ms. Jackson" hook is laughable. ALL you worthless fucks who work in advertising = KILL YOURSELVES NOW.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Sunday, 5 October 2003 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

It's an attempt to lure Ned back into the McDonalds fold.

A spectacular failing on all fronts.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 5 October 2003 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Speaking of Ned and ad campaigns ... right now I'm watching football and a Hewlett-Packard ad just came on which features "Pictures of You"!!!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Sunday, 5 October 2003 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Snarf. A pity, I hadn't realized Robert needed money that badly!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 5 October 2003 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

yes... it scares me because i think it is trying to call out to ME. they even changed fonts!

petite verte (petite verte), Sunday, 5 October 2003 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

It kind of makes sense actually. David Foster Wallace wrote an essay about people who hate TV that TV seems to be aware of. By using a hip but accessible song the average viewer gets to hear a pretty jingle while the hipster's brain explodes, making half the hipsters wonder if TV is getting cooler and the other half morbidly fascinated. Either way they keep watching.

Me? I'm going to pretend I'm a bigger Minutemen fan than I actually am. "let the products sell themselves fuck advertising, commercial psychology psychological methods to sell should be destroyed because of their own blind involvement in their own conditioned minds the unit bonded together morals, ideals, awareness, progress let yourself be heard! "

The irony of course being that the Minutemen were used for a car ad (though all the money supposedly went to an operation for D. Boon's dad, so at least they created more of a conundrum than the usual "it's the only way we can get our song heard and get some money shlurp shlurp")

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 5 October 2003 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow, me and a Toyota ad have something in common.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 5 October 2003 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

As much as I like Justin Timberlake, I wouldn't want to eat him.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 5 October 2003 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

some of my friendsters would beg to differ.

petite verte (petite verte), Sunday, 5 October 2003 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

JT hasn't been eaten enough.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 5 October 2003 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I was about to start a thread on the HP "Pictures Of You" ad. I seriously want to buy HP stock now solely because of that ad.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 5 October 2003 18:52 (twenty-two years ago)

haha - that ad is the first time I've had a 'now they've gone TOO FAR!' reaction to a song being used in an ad. I flashback to 8th grade girlfriends, methods of note folding, digital revolutions, etc. every time it comes on.

cinniblount (James Blount), Sunday, 5 October 2003 18:56 (twenty-two years ago)

“When we leverage our resources, talent and infrastructure, the power of the McDonald’s system is unparalleled,” Light added. “We’re working together to move this brand forward into the 21st Century in a way that our customers worldwide will find fresh and appealing.”

Annouschka Magnatech (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 5 October 2003 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

has anyone tried the mcphilly cheesesteak yet?

cinniblount (James Blount), Sunday, 5 October 2003 19:19 (twenty-two years ago)

that's so wrong

Annouschka Magnatech (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 5 October 2003 19:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Jesus, even I can't get behind that, and I'm a McGriddle-supporter.

Tep (ktepi), Sunday, 5 October 2003 19:27 (twenty-two years ago)

September 2, 2003...McDonald's new "i'm lovin' it"™ commercials reflect the lifestyles and attitudes of today's consumers.

ick.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Sunday, 5 October 2003 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

the passive voice: are you thinking it's classic or dud?

Annouschka Magnatech (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 5 October 2003 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha my friend and I just saw one of these. Sooo bad. During it we kept asking "wait, this is a joke, right? wtf this is a french fry commercial?!?", the same initial reaction I had to the Spice Girls minus the french fry part.

oops (Oops), Sunday, 5 October 2003 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

The Minutemen being used for anything really doesn't faze me after seeing them used in credit sequences that involve Johnny Knoxville and pals causing themselves and each other whimsical pain/humiliation. On MTV.

(yes yes I know Jackass = "more punk rock", but their audience [incl. trendglom ad-execs] can't all be people who read "Big Brother" and are familiar with the skate-video-blooper-reel cult)

nate detritus (natedetritus), Sunday, 5 October 2003 21:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris Pontius dressed as a Dutch schoolgirl = perfect visual representation of the Minutemen's music.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 5 October 2003 21:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Incidentally, I've heard that One True Voice have thrown their lot in with McDonalds as well... apparently it was the natty uniforms and flexible working hours that swung it.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 5 October 2003 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

whoops - obviously I made a mistake up there; I was hungover or something. Anyway, it's "So Fresh, So Clean" that the Micky D commercial lamely mimics, not "Ms. Jackson".

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 6 October 2003 00:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Ive seen those new Maccas ads the last week or two. No offense to our fine merkin friends on here, but why are we getting an ad so overtly american here in australia? Can we not make our own versions? What are pictures of kids hangin' in the hood in NYC with a JT rap gonna do for us? You'd all be scratching your heads if the ad went "schwoit mate, I fuckin' love this shit" with a guy in a Torana driving down Lygon street leaning out of his window with a Quarter Pounder in his hand.

Come to think of it, if they did THAT as an ad I might have been more impressed, haha.

Besides which, it's an arse song and an arse concept "yo we're down wit da kids y'all". Fuck that shit. I love how JT sings "I don't cook" or something in the tune, suggesting thats wht McD's is an obvious solution. ARGH.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 6 October 2003 00:19 (twenty-two years ago)

wtf? Yer goddamn Paul Hogan wouldn't shut up about the damn Subaru Outback here. Karma's a bitch, you aussies!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 6 October 2003 00:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Hahaha! Fair point :)

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 6 October 2003 00:25 (twenty-two years ago)

McManifest Destiny!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 6 October 2003 00:26 (twenty-two years ago)

hmmm. All these ads look like they were shot in Europe, to me. Maybe it's the grainy film stock.

hstencil, Monday, 6 October 2003 00:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey - we're not 'grainy'.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 6 October 2003 00:29 (twenty-two years ago)

It reminds me more of that Saturday morning show "City Guys".

Carey (Carey), Monday, 6 October 2003 03:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Now that I've said that I have been on sitcomsonline.com listening to old sitcom theme songs. I never realized before how magnificent the theme songs to Taxi and Charles in Charge were before.

Carey (Carey), Monday, 6 October 2003 03:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Didn't Bob James compose the Taxi theme? or am I imagining that?

oops (Oops), Monday, 6 October 2003 03:29 (twenty-two years ago)

oh wow

oops (Oops), Monday, 6 October 2003 03:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Charles in Charge and Buffy aren't on there. Overcome by sadness.

Carey (Carey), Monday, 6 October 2003 03:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, the Taxi theme is a Bob James joint, oops. I think it was preexisting (not written specifically for the show) but I might be wrong about that.

rob geary (rgeary), Monday, 6 October 2003 05:39 (twenty-two years ago)

It's called "Angela." That album is awful though.

rob geary (rgeary), Monday, 6 October 2003 05:40 (twenty-two years ago)

The song is pretty awful, too, taken away from the beginning of a great show. Bob James is awful. I know this much is true.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Monday, 6 October 2003 09:34 (twenty-two years ago)

And yet "Nautilus" has given us so much awesomeness. Also that Mardi Gras song.
