(Some of their rankings are strange, and much as I love Dirk, he's too much of an injury worry for me to take him second overall)

Sam, it's pretty easy to learn as you go. The only weird thing is that you "start" more players than actually are on a basketball team, and you have a certain number of starts total to use for the season in each position slot. I can't make it sound sensical but it's actually really easy to learn on the fly. Yahoo has a good tutorial and I learned from scratch last year and came in third in a decently competitive league!

The Pistons-Cavs game was pretty sloppy, but, Lebron is for real. Cavs seem like a completely different team with him and Paul Silas on board. I'm not sure if they'll make the playoffs, but they're respectable and way more confident than last year. Lebron will wind up at PG or at least handling the ball quite a lot. He's definitely got that freakish court awareness/ability to make his teammates better as advertised. Darko struggled but had those "flashes" you would expect from an 18-year-old kid who's never played a professional game in the U.S. But he has so much to learn. Rest of the Pistons are pretty banged up and haven't had a chance to learn Larry Brown's offense... I think they might get off to a slow start this season (they were the first team to go 8-0 in the preseason last year).

Since this has become a "pre-season observations" thread as well, things I learned from my first pre-season game (Bucks at Grizzlies, aka "Clash of the Titans"):
T.J. Ford is unbelievably fast with the ball in his hands. He was atrocious in the first half but really settled down and played well in the second half. Only took one jumper (which he hit), so who knows about his shooting, and will probably get abused in the post (not an issue matched up with J-Will), but could be a player.
Also, the Grizzlies prospective starting lineup this season -- Williams, Mike Miller, James Posey, Pau Gasol, Stromile Swift -- might be the fastest in the league. I don't think there's another frontcourt tandem in the league that can run the floor with Pau and Stro and Jason Kidd is the only PG better in the open floor than J-Will (don't believe the crap written by national press types who haven't actually seen him play in two years). With Pau and Stro blocking shots and finishing on the other end, Mike Miller handling the ball and knocking down jumpers, James Posey creating steals and filling the lane, and J-Will pushing the ball, this might be the best fast-break offense in the league (outscored Bucks 39-6 on the break), that is, if we can get defensive rebounds, which won't be so easy against teams not based in Milwaukee.

J-Will was totally my starting point guard for most of last season. Great sleeper, especially since my other point was Howard Eisley. (ick).
Who's gonna be the biggest headcase this season? I got ten on Ron Artest. I bet he punches Carlisle in the face before the All Star break.

― rob geary (rgeary), Friday, 10 October 2003 01:10 (twenty-one years ago)
In more cheerful news, yeah, Ron Artest got a T and then benched in his first game under Carlisle. Hilarious. I geniunely think that he's gonna get shipped out of Indy this year...,
And Mt. Mutombo is gonna be a Knick! I guess Layden figured that Michael Doleac was too mobile. (SNAP!)
― Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 10 October 2003 02:19 (twenty-one years ago)
Saw a bit of the 76ers/Heat game on TNT the other day and Dwayne Wade looked spectacular. Didn't show he could run point (that was more Odom) or shoot with range, but his athleticism was dominant.
The Kobe thing is sad and awful. There was a lot of speculation (and some quasi-reliable scuttle) that he would end up here with Jerry West after opting out of his deal next year. The rape charges and our Posey signing pretty much nipped that pipe dream in the bud. If he stops playing this year and they bring Jordan in that'll be an epic circus.

Jamal Magliore... All Star. Has a nice ring! Are there really NO centers in the East -- I mean Ben Wallace is technically a center.
I think that unless Portland gets a can't-pass-up trade offer, they keep Rasheed for the rest of the year, let him walk, and use all that cap room to build for the future and resign players (Darius is looking rejuvinated).
