reasons to be jovial:

i) The Ned Cometh

ii) Turkey v England is best watched in a pub full of people you like to natter with on the interweb

iii) i have started my new job and it rocks hard, tho Wednesday's Club FT should provide a fitting opportunity to commemorate this anyway

the suggestion of going bowling has been mooted but i'm not sure how feasible it is. but if anyone's planning on watching the football uptown somewhere then count me in.

stevem (blueski), Monday, 6 October 2003 11:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Four Tet live in Exeter. :o(

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 6 October 2003 11:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I, for one, will not be coming. You are all wasting your time.

Plunging Hen, Monday, 6 October 2003 11:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Come to the official UberFAP the following week Nick! This goes for any other non-London Ilx0rs as well... we can't allow ourselves to be outdone by our American friends, can we?

I can't make it, as I'm sadly planning on spending that particular Saturday on a beach in the Mediterranean in the company of the beautiful woman, but have fun nonetheless and don't ruin Ned before next weekend.

Personally, I think you should hold this particular FAP in Wood Green or Dalston, just to see what happens.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 6 October 2003 11:20 (twenty-one years ago)

have a good holiday Matthaus

what's caused this hen to plunge i wonder?

stevem (blueski), Monday, 6 October 2003 11:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Holloway FAP. (Actually this is a bad idea because it is very unlikely that I could make this).

Pete (Pete), Monday, 6 October 2003 11:33 (twenty-one years ago)

If that Saturday just can't work there's always the following day.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 6 October 2003 12:15 (twenty-one years ago)

i think the saturday is feasible, we just have to be as cunning as a large bag of foxes with revolving tails regarding which pub we choose to watch the match in...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 6 October 2003 13:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Isabel is on her hen night that day so I am very ready willing and able for pub action.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 6 October 2003 13:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Are you trying to insinuate something?

Plunging Hen, Monday, 6 October 2003 13:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Rah! Well, to give a sense of the scheduling -- I arrive at Heathrow at noon, assuming no delays, and Martin and I figure it could be anywhere up to three hours for me to get through customs and get over to his place, though hopefully not. I do want to do something that'll keep me up for the rest of the day/evening, since that's usually been the best way for me to beat jet lag, forcing myself onto the new schedule! Bowling, England v. Turkey, pub, it's all good. Did we want to try the curry fest on Sunday?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 6 October 2003 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyone fancy a lunch-time pint on the Sunday (12th)? Me and mr ailsa are getting into Heathrow at 8am and flying out of Gatwick at 4.30 pm, so will be hanging round for a while in the morning / v. early afternoon. Not convinced there will be much else to do so would welcome suggestions. We are toying with the idea of going on the London Eye, but whether or not we book it is entirely dependent on the weather forecast for Sunday morning.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 6 October 2003 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Yay! We must meet, that is grand. Let us plot and plan.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 6 October 2003 18:39 (twenty-one years ago)

One constraint, Ned, is that whatever time you arrive and whatever plans we have, I will not miss a minute of Turkey-England for anything. It's a very big game indeed. I know you Americans don't have any interest in international competition, preferring instead to allow a Canadian team or two in and then dub your best world champs, with the added insurance of only playing games that no one else wants to, but this is big stuff for an England football fan.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 6 October 2003 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

i wouldn't mind going on the London Eye! sunday may not be good for me tho - BUT the Eye is near that Namco Station bowling alley...

i need to watch the match on a HUGE screen, and without craning my neck or having to stand up - this is a huge problem if the intention is watching anywhere but inside your own home.

i'd wait til Daddino gets here before going for the curry too - assuming he wants to?

stevem (blueski), Monday, 6 October 2003 20:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't even know what time the game is, nor whether it's on BBC or Sky or what, so I don't know how easy it will be to coordinate with Ned's arrival.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 6 October 2003 20:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I will not miss a minute of Turkey-England for anything

I'm totally up for this, Martin! I am a football fan in my own way and I've never had a chance to catch a qualifier live in this fashion, so let's plan some sort of pub get-together like Stevem suggests for this. So trust me, unless I'm fiendishly late or something, I'd want in.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 6 October 2003 21:03 (twenty-one years ago)

the game is live only on Sky Sports and kicks off at 8pm - delayed coverage follows on ITV...wouldn't mind seeing the Ireland game too of course (ko 5.30pm)

my dream last night - i was John o' bleedin' Shea and i scored the winner in Zurich with a deft right to left switch and slot in after running about 50 yards. in the last minute. 0-1. then Wayne Rooney did the exact same thing in Istanbul, only while everyone was going completely mental Turkey equalised just seconds after the kick-off, last touch of the game. 1-1. i'd certainly settle for all of that this Saturday.

stevem (blueski), Monday, 6 October 2003 22:42 (twenty-one years ago)

i've ionly just twigged that Nick meant Four Tet are playing a concert in Exeter as opposed to Four Tet reside and dwell there...

so, venues? i'll get to the pub for at least 4pm - let the mayhem begin...

stevem (blueski), Monday, 6 October 2003 22:45 (twenty-one years ago)

EIGHT??? i thought it was 6, or is that 2 hours of c0cking "build-up"?

i'm only suggesting this because i'll be going there after the match anyway, but what about the betsey?

http://www.fancyapint.com/thepubs/pub296.htm

they do have a telly with sky, but it's not very big, but it might not be too bad in there (yeah, right). just a thought anyway...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 08:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Please don't be offended. My incipient phobia of crowds has been getting much worse lately.

kate (kate), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 08:23 (twenty-one years ago)

The Apple Tree is opening up specially for the game, at 5.30. Not sure how busy it will be, as they don't usually open on saturdays, as there isn't too much residential custom there, but they've got a huge screen, and it's round the corner from the betsy.

I will be in Chorley, looking forward to fielding bitchy comments from my mother when we come back from the pub for a civilised, if late, meal with my parents, sister and her boyfriend. Oh joy.

Vicky (Vicky), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 08:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I too am anticipating an interesting time on Saturday - especially if the result is bad and I go into a raging sulk.

chris (chris), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 08:32 (twenty-one years ago)

vicky that is a marvy idea. up the apple tree i say :) us and the posties cheering on the team etc...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 08:42 (twenty-one years ago)

If I wasn't hideously skint at the moment I'd be there like a shot (uberFAP), but things are a bit tight at the mo. I might be doing Londinium for a weekend in November though.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 08:48 (twenty-one years ago)

The Apple Tree sounds ideal to me, esp if it's not on people's beaten Saturday tracks. Look here's a link: http://www.fancyapint.com/thepubs/pub941.htm

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 08:49 (twenty-one years ago)

The landlady's changed, and there's a pub dog! A nice fat, old looking boxer. You'll no doubt fall over it at some point.

Vicky (Vicky), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 09:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Apple Tree sounds good to me, but will they be showing the Ireland match?

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 13:09 (twenty-one years ago)

No, cos they're not opening until 5.30. They're opening up specially for the England match.

Vicky (Vicky), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 13:19 (twenty-one years ago)

That's only on Setanta AFAIAA; need to prolly find a Celtic Pub in London.

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 13:20 (twenty-one years ago)

it's not on Sky Sports? outrageous...if not then i might go and watch it at the Corley Tavern then head straight for the Apple Tree

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

It sounds as if Ned should have plenty of time to get here and for us then to get into town to meet at the pub, which will surely be showing the Ireland game the moment it opens. I would like to see that one too, if possible.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Woohoo! Sounds like it'll be a great evening. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

the words champing and bit spring to mind

so yeh, i misinformed again - 6pm kick off for the match, guess i will see people in the Apple Tree around 5.30??

stevem (blueski), Friday, 10 October 2003 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Ahem....

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 11 October 2003 08:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned is here, and we'll be there at about 5.30.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 11 October 2003 12:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Ailsa! Um, drop Martin or I an e-mail or something, or send along a mobile number, and we will meet up with you tomorrow. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 11 October 2003 13:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry I didn't show up to this. I didn't feel like coming out in the end (GameCubeGameCube) and I had a biggish evening lined up for the Sunday. I am sure I will see you all during the week!
