I'm watching this for the first time at the moment and even though I should be paying more attention, I am starting this thread. Pretentious tripe or inspired hypothesis or flawed admirable-effort or all of the above?

Also: Japanese woman in flower ceremony in the beginning. Not to be redundant but. WTF?

(its the one where einstein, m monroe, dimaggio and mccarthy all meet in a hotel room)

Yes it is, Vic. It's great, I think. Bonkers, obviously, but an utter joy. I love Nic Roeg.

I don't think there was one coherent point, but it explored a nice premise. Marilyn explaining the theory of relativity was nice.

I'm dying to see this. Last spring I saw Roeg's Eureka (which featured Gene Hackman, Mickey Rourke, Joe Pesche, and Rutger Hauer). Gene Hackman discovers gold in Alaska, Rutger discovers voodoo, and the amazing Rourke discovers Hackman's daughter. I couldn't decide whether that film was inspired and thoughtful, or pretentious and inane, or visually inspired but pretentious; probably the latter. I can't decide whether my favorite Roeg is Walkabout or Performance but I've made considerable effort to see every film of his I can reasonably get my hands on since viewing Performance.

I think Eureka is all of those things! And Walkabout is my favourite. Or maybe Don't Look Now.

Don't Look Now, followed by The Man Who Fell to Earth.

My favorite is "Bad Timing, A Sensual Obsession."

Roeg constantly seems like the guy who'd be my favorite filmmaker I've yet to actually see anything by.

Bad Timing is one of the most unpleasant movies I've ever seen. In fairness, it's clearly meant to be unpleasant. The casting is also effective, albeit irritating.

UK viewers:

On Sunday night there was some murder mystery thing on BBC1. Obv I kissed it, but Heat listed it as involving the ghost [or something] of a house in Notting Hill which had been the location for a '60s gangster movie. wtf? Anyone see it? Did Jagger or Fox cameo?

Insignificance: Classic.
