dammit, dammit, dammit
According to an article on Reuters, Christophe Ramboz recently told French daily Les Echos: "A third of the source code was stolen. It's serious because it forces us to delay the launch of the game by at least four months, that is to April 2004. Just the time to rewrite parts of the game."

Here's the Reuters' article

Fuckin' asshat code thieves. I was so looking forward to this, too. Even if this is just an excuse to delay the game, i'm pissed.

Guess I better blow my money on "The Wind Waker", instead.

"You'll all stay behind in class until whoever took the source code owns up"

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

There was a big todo about this having an absolute release date of 9/30. I think they just needed more time!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 20:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I find it hard to believe that stealing code can be a matter of physically removing it in the manner of a stealing a loaf of bread.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 20:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I feel your pain Kingfish. I was really waiting for this game to come out.

Lord Custos Armitron to the thread.

calstars (calstars), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 22:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I bet there's two reasons for the delay:
A) They already needed one, and now they have an excuse, so they can polish more! Wooptidoo.
B) They need to change up some of the parts, mostly the things in multiplayer so people can't make lots of fancy cheat-things off the bat, which they pretty much can now.
Not to mention that they probably want to change some of the copyprotecting methods etc.

Not that I care overly much, aside from on the trivia-level. I have an old computer and minimal interest in games these days.

i have the E3 demo reel in full(all 500+ megs of it) on my soulseek/kazaa if anybody wants it

Kingfish (Kingfish), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 23:40 (twenty-two years ago)

The way I understand it, the code was able to be stolen due to the hackers getting access to Valve's internal system via a trojan of some sort.

Because Valve use Outlook.

NO SYMPATHEEEE.....

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 23:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I totally agree with the "it's mostly just a convenient excuse" theory. I think they're actually quite relieved.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Thursday, 9 October 2003 00:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyone here actually have the source code? I could give it a shot and make a mod of it making all the characters calliope clowns.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 9 October 2003 01:45 (twenty-two years ago)

ok, more seriously.. .if "code theft" is actually a lie, it's a really stupid lie, because stuff like this becomes available to almost everyone who fancies him/herself a HAX0R within a week. if nothing shows up in a while, this will make the company look really lame.

Still though, not nearly as lame as John Romero and Daikatana, but anyway...

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 9 October 2003 01:48 (twenty-two years ago)

here's Penny Arcade's take on it

Kingfish (Kingfish), Thursday, 9 October 2003 02:17 (twenty-two years ago)

It isnt a lie - my other half is on a gaming forum, and has seen code snippets and suchlike with his own eyes, as far as I know.

Go check out www.3dr.com - I believe thats where it was being talked about.

Killer mosquitos ahoy!

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 9 October 2003 03:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, I don't doubt that the code is actually out there (although it's worthless without the various libraries and such that would also be needed to compile and/or run it); I just think Valve or whoever most likely would have never got it out on time anyway.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Thursday, 9 October 2003 03:21 (twenty-two years ago)

And plus since it's going to be cracked and shared within hours of release anyway the whole situation is pretty stupid.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Thursday, 9 October 2003 03:23 (twenty-two years ago)

The code leak is real, and many game resources have been leaked as well (about 1.4gb worth, at least). A couple of days ago a hacked-together playable version of the engine surfaced. Among the playable levels are the scenes demo'd at E3.

I've got the source, and it's genuine. There's a bittorrent of the playable release with something like 10,000 seeds. Biggest. Torrent. Ever.

Andrew (enneff), Thursday, 9 October 2003 04:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I think we'll probably see a better game as a result of all this. I'm happy to wait.

Andrew (enneff), Thursday, 9 October 2003 04:02 (twenty-two years ago)

goddammit. they could at least post a demo. a sample level or something...

Kingfish (Kingfish), Thursday, 9 October 2003 04:07 (twenty-two years ago)

eight months pass...
revive!

http://www.gamespot.com/news/2004/06/24/news_6101371.html

they've announced the voice cast for the game!

Robert "Benson" Guillaume will play Dr. Eli Vance, a benevolent scientist and fellow survivor of the first Half-Life's infamous Black Mesa incident. Vance's assistant, Dr. Judith Mossman, will be portrayed by Michelle Forbes, most famous for her role as Ensign Ro on Star Trek: The Next Generation. Vance's daughter, Alyx, will be voiced by unknown actress Merle Dandridge. British actor Jim French will play Father Grigori, a booby-trap-happy priest who helps Gordon through the streets of City 17...

Kingfish of Burma (Kingfish), Friday, 25 June 2004 05:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I have to admit the game does look pretty shithot, and I dont play many games.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 25 June 2004 05:23 (twenty-one years ago)

April 2004....HAHAHAHAAA

Dan I. (Dan I.), Friday, 25 June 2004 05:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I know, I did chuckle when I re-read that title.

Its like Sims 2 was supposedly coming out in March... ha! Oh well. Sept it is then. I can wait. I know how to wait...

*waits sadly*

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 25 June 2004 05:31 (twenty-one years ago)

MAYBE it will come out by 1 sept 2004

MAYBE

Kingfish of Burma (Kingfish), Friday, 25 June 2004 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I think they made arrests earlier this month in connection with the code theft.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 25 June 2004 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

MAYBE it will come out by 1 sept 2004

I wouldn't trust any speculation on the matter, most comments about possible release schedules seem to come from Doug Lombardi, who seems to have a very distant connection with the actual development team as most of his projected dates seem to fit in only with 'what customers/shareholders want to believe'.

One of the best truths with big-name games is not to get too excited about them until gold is announced.

PlayfulPuppy (playfulpuppy), Saturday, 26 June 2004 02:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Stuff like Far Cry and Splinter Cell 2 is good to hold one over until then...

I was in the computer game shop the other day and they had properly printed boxes on the shelf for HL2 and Doom3, with "pre-order now" printed on them FWIW.
