One day into my Information Studies MA and I'm already wondering how on earth I'm going to do this AND my job. This may be my last thread for a while...

Advice on study strategies and general coping please!

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 9 October 2003 10:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Spend inordinate amounts of time in the library nattering to people like me!

I have just become a postgraduate student: for the *third* time... accidental side-effect of my training course at my new job.

alext (alext), Thursday, 9 October 2003 10:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Take it easy, you overwork massively in the first few weeks, learn the rythmns of the course and what you need to read and don't need to read.

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 9 October 2003 10:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't leave my job unfortunately as working here is the only reason I can do this course in the first place. I'm sure I'll be fine... should know by now really that Pete is right - I've worked with overworking freshers for long enough. At least I'm not trying to commute from Portsmouth, work full-time and raise three kids at the same time. I'll have it easy!

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 9 October 2003 11:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Good luck Archel! I was in exactly the same situation when I was getting my degree. It is a lot of hard work and juggling work and school can be very stressful, but you will get through it.

Nicolars (Nicole), Thursday, 9 October 2003 11:53 (twenty-one years ago)

post-grad RoXor! and yeah, what Pete said.
I'm dying to start a PhD right now

Baaderist (Fabfunk), Thursday, 9 October 2003 13:04 (twenty-one years ago)

hey! Good luck, I'm doing this postgrad degree too (well Info Management), part-time though, I'll be a MAMA by the end of it. How many modules are you doing?

I find it best in the first few weeks to go to the lectures, write a few notes, look in a few books. Then I'll just start on the first assignment 2 or 3 weeks or so before it has to be handed in. I'm a lazy cyncial student, so maybe my advice is not the best!

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 9 October 2003 15:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah! Make sure you get your Athens username and password!! It makes life alot easier when you can access loads of databases and download articles.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 9 October 2003 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

good luck archel.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 9 October 2003 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah I have to get another athens password bcz mine has run out. grr!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 9 October 2003 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm doing the second half of my Dip. M with exams in December as well as working full-time. It's brutal. My advice (nothing particularly novel) :

1) Don't get behind. Set time aside to do the course work at the evenings and weekends and do it come hell or high water.

2) Don't get ahead. Don't worry about stuff coming up on the course before you get to it. Just deal with it when it comes.

3) Are there exams? If so, revision is continuous and starts at the start, not at the last minute. Look over things often and you'll commit them to memory v.easily, without knowing you're even doing it.

4) Just say no! If you're busy with the course and people put extra demands on you that mean you'll get behind or get stressed, tell them to bog off for now....nicely.

5) Have as much relexation as you can and when you're relaxing don't pick up your course books 'just to check something'. If you do you'll go into a spiral of panic and guilt.

Very best of luck - you'll be fine!

I am afraid I don't have any handy tips for you, but hang in there lady, we all know you'll do it! *hugs*

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 10 October 2003 08:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh & if you need a break, feel free to come to Cambridge!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 10 October 2003 08:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 10 October 2003 10:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Note this may not work if you are a masseuse.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 10 October 2003 10:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Are you saying that postgraduate course in massage are in someways completely unrelated to the shop floor experiences of the hard working massuse?

my take on it is that i haven't started yet- way back in the 90's a CS degree was my first crack at college but it didnt work out, so 15 years wasted later im back to learn some marketable skills
