Classic for all the wrong reasons, dud for all the right ones.

adaml (adaml), Thursday, 9 October 2003 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

You post that picture, and you expect any answer other than CLASSIC?

Ricardo (RickyT), Thursday, 9 October 2003 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

A picture doesn't do the man justice. You need THE VOICE! HO HO, SIR! YES...

adaml (adaml), Thursday, 9 October 2003 15:07 (twenty-two years ago)

GORDON'S ALIVE!?

robster (robster), Thursday, 9 October 2003 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Seeing the pre-beard Blessed in I, Claudius was something of a shock.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 9 October 2003 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

His Long John Silver was genius

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 9 October 2003 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

DIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIVVVVVVVVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

VULTAN, Thursday, 9 October 2003 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

OH WELL, WHO WANTS TO LIVE FOREVER?!

Kingfish (Kingfish), Thursday, 9 October 2003 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Goddamn it, you have made me want to watch Flash frickin Gordon!

Ricardo (RickyT), Thursday, 9 October 2003 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

"Quintilius Varus, WHERE ARE MY EAGLES?!??!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?"

Girolamo Savonarola, Thursday, 9 October 2003 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

HELLO, I'M BRIAN BLESSED

Ed (dali), Thursday, 9 October 2003 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Seeing the pre-beard Blessed in I, Claudius was something of a shock.

Took a few centuries off him, at least.

The man could be nowt but Classic, as he ruled the early series of Blackadder

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Thursday, 9 October 2003 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

The man's classic line is "Come, let us feast!" I've no idea what he said it in, but I have that line in my head as the definitive BB line.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Thursday, 9 October 2003 18:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Girolamo OTM!

s1utsky (slutsky), Thursday, 9 October 2003 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

What about his portrayal of Mark of Cornwall in 'Arthur of the Britons'? I can still picture his face, blue with rage at the way Oliver Tobias' Arthur was conducting the campaign against the Saxon vermin.

David (David), Thursday, 9 October 2003 21:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Johnney B OTM

adaml (adaml), Thursday, 9 October 2003 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

the word "stentorian" was made for this guy... i love him

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 9 October 2003 23:40 (twenty-two years ago)

oh yeah, and he did the voice for Boss Nass(t?) in the Phantom Menace, too.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Friday, 10 October 2003 12:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I think he's great. I saw him in 'Cats' when I was quite young & he was amazing. Then I saw him again in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (ahem) last year & he was still great. Sadly though, when he was walking on the pavement outside the theatre some lads were shouting abuse at him, which was horrible.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 10 October 2003 13:08 (twenty-two years ago)

He's unsuccessfully tried to climb Mt. Everest, what, sixty-eight times now?

Girolamo Savonarola, Friday, 10 October 2003 13:13 (twenty-two years ago)

i liked him as the King/Edmund's father in Blackadder I too - "it is my sworn intent to bare my broad buttocks and shout 'behold! i honour thee most highly!'

stevem (blueski), Friday, 10 October 2003 13:19 (twenty-two years ago)

There's this one moment in the credits to the Blackadder I episode where Edmund becomes an archbishop that I think is Blessed clearly parodying himself perfectly -- he's standing in a lectern supposedly delivering a sermon as the king, only he's dressed in full armor (I think) and starts shouting, gesticulating wildly and waving his sword around. There's no sound heard from all this, just the theme song, which makes it all the more hilarious -- he knows his metier.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 October 2003 13:33 (twenty-two years ago)

How can you not love Brian Blessed? There should be talking dolls of him.

[pulls string] "COME LET US FEAST!"
[pulls string] "WHERE ARE MY EAGLES?"
[pulls string] "HE FIGHTS IN THIS GODFORSAKEN WAR!"

Anna (Anna), Friday, 10 October 2003 13:36 (twenty-two years ago)

anna you are a genius

stevem (blueski), Friday, 10 October 2003 13:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Total classic, greatest living Englishman, the man is to acting what happy hardcore is to music.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 10 October 2003 14:10 (twenty-two years ago)

otm

four months pass...
Can only add my voice to the chorus of praise for the man Blessed.
For roles in "Dr Who" and "Blake's Seven" too... My life will not quite feel complete until I've been able to see him in a pantomime; apparently, they are effectively one man shows, with the rest of the cast practically irrelevant. :)

Blessed actually seems to give the very broad, rich acting style a good name in this day and age; which for me can only be a good thing... too many people take the Stanislavskian school as something of a gospel.

Tom May (Tom May), Friday, 27 February 2004 21:27 (twenty-one years ago)

There's a video knocking around somewhere of a pilot for a game-show that featured BB as the host. At one point he's handing out the prizes to the lucky winners and, finding out that the prize is a PalmPilot, he says...(and you imagine the full-on GaaaRRRR roar..."a Palmpilot...a Palmpilot....sounds like some kind of WANKING MACHINE"

It never aired , apparently

winterland, Saturday, 28 February 2004 10:47 (twenty-one years ago)

and..CLASSIC for his quote in that Everest documentary where he's asked about the french climbers not helping the party lost on the mountain;

"The FRENCH...THE FRENCH....I piss on the french from a great height.."

winterland, Saturday, 28 February 2004 10:50 (twenty-one years ago)

totally awesome in claudius

phantasy bear (nordicskilla), Thursday, 26 January 2006 22:43 (nineteen years ago)

You desire with all your being to be him, just for one night.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 26 January 2006 22:46 (nineteen years ago)

Brian Blessed is my dad.

JimD (JimD), Friday, 27 January 2006 00:42 (nineteen years ago)

WISH HIM WELL, MY SON! WISH HIM WELL!

phantasy bear (nordicskilla), Friday, 27 January 2006 00:43 (nineteen years ago)

Here he is, on the left, apparently telling a disinterested audience that "it was THIS BIG".

(For some reason the only pics of my dad I have my flickr stream seem to be taken through his kitchen window. Also present - my bro and my sis).

JimD (JimD), Friday, 27 January 2006 00:58 (nineteen years ago)

So...he...actually is your dad?

phantasy bear (nordicskilla), Friday, 27 January 2006 00:59 (nineteen years ago)

Blessed doesn't begin with D.

phantasy bear (nordicskilla), Friday, 27 January 2006 01:00 (nineteen years ago)

"QUINTILIUS VARUS - WHERE ARE MY EAGLES????"

"IS THERE ANYONE IN ROME WHO HASN'T SLEPT WITH MY DAUGHTER???"

Ben Mott (Ben Mott), Friday, 27 January 2006 07:37 (nineteen years ago)

No, he actually isn't my dad. My dad just looks like him.

JimD (JimD), Friday, 27 January 2006 18:29 (nineteen years ago)

In school, one of my friends could always crack me up by putting on "the Brian Blessed face" and saying "..flying BLIND on a Rocket Cycle??!?!?"

Ash (ashbyman), Friday, 27 January 2006 18:58 (nineteen years ago)

Not sure how to feel about the second one because I don't know the woman he's talking about.

Herring was trying to get him for a couple of years and he doesn't disappoint. It's barely an interview (there's only a few questions and then Blessed takes over most of the time). I've seen a quiet interview with him before and I thought he might be like that, but he's full of his usual energy here. Some good stories about fellow actors, climbers and NASA.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Sunday, 22 April 2018 17:30 (seven years ago)

As I mentioned in the horror thread, I only just the other day watched Flash Gordon for the first time ever. Blessed was a highlight, obvs. The man looks like he could rip off the fender of a car with his teeth. Who knows, maybe he has.

Across the You Never Her (Old Lunch), Sunday, 22 April 2018 17:53 (seven years ago)

he doesn't like farmers!

calzino, Tuesday, 25 May 2021 21:59 (four years ago)

brian blessed and the theater were made for each other. this says nothing regarding any admirable traits he might possess outside of that context.

What's It All About, Althea? (Aimless), Tuesday, 25 May 2021 22:18 (four years ago)

I've got nothing but respect for hot-tempered foulmouthed luvvies that value badgers as higher lifeforms than landowning Countryside Alliance m'f'ckers. He seems ok does Brian. Probably not a comrade but at least he's frequently very funny.

calzino, Tuesday, 25 May 2021 22:37 (four years ago)

it was a nice moment

What's It All About, Althea? (Aimless), Tuesday, 25 May 2021 22:46 (four years ago)

His story about toilet facilities on everest on richard herrings podcast was incredible

Completely unmanageable as an interviewer besides but seems an alright fella all told

three years pass...

Important BB content via two Bluesky posts, one quoting the other:

My brother in law was in a window seat in a pub in Oxford. Someone walked past the window window. His friend said “Was that Brian Blessed?” at which point blessed LEAPT back into view shouting “YES! IT’S ME! BRIAN BLESSED!” then threw back his head, laughed and RAN away.

I knew a theatre technician who did a show with Blessed and they were in the pub afterwards along with his wife only to hear someone criticising said show.

Blessed: YOU SIR ARE A CUNT, YOUR WERE BORN A CUNT AND YOU’LL DIE A CUNT.

Wife: Brian..

Blessed: Not now dear I’m calling this man a cunt.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 23 August 2024 19:51 (one year ago)

Humblebrag alert, I've recorded Brian many a time over the years and have lost count how many times he's called me a c*nt.

Maresn3st, Friday, 23 August 2024 19:57 (one year ago)

Hahahah! I take it it's beyond irritation or affection at this point.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 23 August 2024 20:12 (one year ago)

I could die happy having been called a cunt by BB

carry on columbine (Matt #2), Friday, 23 August 2024 20:15 (one year ago)

XP - No irritation really, I've never seen him annoyed at anything, even when dealing with potentially annoying advertising bods. It's just his weird thespy way of putting people at ease by doing 'Brian Blessed', he's kinda like Tom Waits

Maresn3st, Friday, 23 August 2024 22:31 (one year ago)
