If we counted what was in mu SHOPPING BAGS next to me, this would be a very long post. Maybe I'll do a seperate one, cos I wanna waste even mroe of my time w/ boring fax.

Pens, index cards or a notebook, a paperback, lip gloss, chapstick, powder, tampon or equivalent, $0.25-$50

Maria, Sunday, 30 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

A thin green three-ring binder filled with the syllabi for my classes, papers for those classes, and handouts for the class I'm teaching - all in the pockets, nothing on the rings. An interdepartmental mailing envelope containing the next test my students are taking. A Cambridge wire-bound (on the top edge) notebook, containing a) notes and b) another philosophy paper or two, tucked in the back. Books: A Philosophy of Mass Art and Mystifying Movies by Noel Carroll, borrowed from my aesthetics prof; Hacket publications of the Euthydemus and Ion / Hippias Major by Plato; the second library copy of Nelson Goodman's Languages of Art. My headphones, discman, and CD carrying case, which contains about 24 CDs: Boards of Canada, In a Beautiful Place Out in the Country; Jay-Z, The Blueprint; Outkast, Stankonia; Talk Talk, Laughing Stock; Spring Heel Jack, Treader; Massive Attack, Protection; Magnetic Fields, Charm of the Highway Strip, and 69 Love Songs vol. 2; Einsturzende Neubauten, Drawings of Patient OT; Sleater-Kinney, Dig Me Out; Al Green's Greatest Hits; Basement Jaxx, Rooty; The Dismemberment Plan, Emergency & I; Fela Kuti, Shakara/London Scene; Bob Dylan, Blonde on Blonde; Burning Airlines, Identikit; Mekons, Journey to the End of the Night; Yo La Tengo, Electro-pur-a; John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman; Fugazi, Red Medicine; The Beta Band, Hot Shots II; Autechre, Confield; Masada, Live in Jerusalem disc 1; The Sea and Cake, The Biz. Two Duracell batteries which have the power meter thingies and so which I think are not really dead yet. A bottle of allergy pills. Two fresh Energizer batteries. A mechanical pencil, maroon, with rubber grip thingy. A little tube of hi-polymer HB 0.5 lead. A clicky eraser. A little plastic box of hi-polymer HB 0.5 lead, though I suspect it is not the same kind as in the tube. A crumpled up cough drop wrapper. A container of HB 0.3 lead for my nonexistent 0.3 lead pencil. A little stapler, and about 150 little staples, loose. A thing of Halls cough drops which looks scary from being in the side pocket for years but which I will leave in case I need it someday and the drops inside the wrappers turn out to be mentholyptusy enough. Sunglasses, with broken bridge piece (still stay on my face though). Scrap of paper counting the last exam handed out. Empty paycheck envelopes. Bus schedules for the 84, 50, 16. Phone number for the graduate school. Flier with "myth/fact" items on it, apparently distributed by pro-Zionist students, which I received at the start of a talk about 911 by a noted anti-Zionist. A small Cambridge notebook containing many things: phone numbers, bus route info, notes on the Russian art and exhibit of photos of Vietnamese POWs that I saw this spring, an unfinished letter to my Peace Corps friend, list of things to learn for quiz bowl, reference numbers from The Arcades Project, plan for bookshelves, other things. Kleenex. Blue medium-point Papermate pen.

After 4 years I finally took the Silly Putty out last week, and put it in my office desk.

Josh, Sunday, 30 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

In my school backpack, which I forgot about: massive American History text, with chapters that take three hours to read because they're so godawfully boring; folder of papers to go with this text, with the beloved Jonathan Edwards sermon I threaten people with; notebook to go with this text as well, with the inside covers pasted over in pictures of In Flames; three-subject Latin notebook with notes and two hundred lines of the Aeneid; absolutely delightful copy of the Aeneid with ten lines per page and the rest filled with notes and vocabulary, and featuring an old purple cover and gold and black print on the front; old notebook with archaeology notes now being filled with random thoughts and organizational lists; Zen in the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance; CD player; six CDs in a small cloth case; NIN's The Fragile in its own case; pens; a pencil; numerous items of makeup; a brush; useless crumpled up papers (and that sheet I was supposed to turn in September 28, oh well); maybe an ID card if I can ever find it; driver's permit; loose change.

Maria, Sunday, 30 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

A book or two, a note pad, a palm pilot, pen, checkbook and headphones w/ 2 or 3 cds.

I Love Listing Things.

Lead for the bass guitar I just collected today. 'Reporter's Notebook' with front cover falling off and pretentious drivel inside. Rough Trade flyer advertising Strokes/Moldy Peaches/Dull Historical Society albums. College Handbook and Diary, completely unused. Wallet (see other thread). Canon camera. Lloyds bank paying in book- ha! Tesco receipt- £6 of Grolsch. Address book with Domino and Pattern stickers. Pencil case containing rubbish girly things like eyeliner that I never use, and a pill bottle. Brown tie that has finally returned to me after being in London for ages. Walkman with odd compilation tape in. Flyer for Manatee, who are rubbish. Very battered copy of 'Post Office' by Bukowski. Four Tet flyer. Two photos of our band playing the Notting Hill Arts Centre. Photo of my brother aged 7 dressed as a gangster. Too many bloody setlists. 3 sets of Sticker photos taken in service stations. Long unused dolebook. Flyer for screening of 'Gummo'. Flyer for Butterflies Of Love gig. Flyer for shit club. Two harmonicas- one in A and one in F. Photo of ex-boyfriend that I probably shouldn't even be mentioning. Lots of bits of paper telling me how to play music. A pen lid.

emil.y, Sunday, 30 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have a purse. It is small. I have inside of it: cell phone, wallet, lip liner, lipstick, "Rouge Pulp" lipgloss, kiehl's lipgloss, chapstick, GAP watermelon lipgloss (funnily, I barely ever wear lipstick at all), a top off a perfume bottle (don't know where the bottle went), a few loose receipts, a wrapper from a cigarette pack, a pack of Parliaments, a pack of Marlboros, about 20 books of matches, my lighter, some loose change, a tin of altoids, Mace, keys to my house, my Victoria's Secret gift certificate and store credit, a book of coupons for Tanger mall that I'm going to mail to my cousin, a compact.

Ally, Sunday, 30 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sarah: you can get Cutie at the Japan Centre in Piccadilly, or even sometimes at Tower. Try those really ace newsagents on Old Compton Street too.

In my bag: Lollies party flyer, three cab receipts, NatWest bumf, Givenchy Rouge Miroir lipstick shade 702, 50p, Safeway receipt, Kirby grips, sunglasses, wallet (contents discussed other thread), Pierrot postcard from Venice which needs to be sent to its chosen recipient, spare keys.

suzy, Sunday, 30 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Cutie is cheaper out at the Oriental Shopping Centre in Colindale, if you can bear to make the trip that far. Japan Centre on Picadilly charges silly prices. Colindale also has a very good Asian food court, absurdly cheap. Colindale tube, turn right, walk about five minutes, turn right again, cross the road. Can't miss it. And there's a Sega amusement arcade if you're that way inclined.

anthony, Monday, 1 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'll back up Nick on the Colindale place - it's MASSIVE and full of more cool things than just Cutie. Hell, I'll even venture that it's worth leaving the force-field of Zones One and Two to reach. If you can fix it to arrive at 6.30 or later, you might be able to get some cut- price sushi from the supermarket there into the bargain.

suzy, Monday, 1 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My backpack comes from Banana Republic. It contains a cheap ballpoint pen; a checkbook; bills from AT&T, my psychiatrist and my gastroenterologist; a small quantity of prescription medicine; a Palm VIIx with a portable keyboard; a hardcover copy of David Halberstam's War in a Time of Peace: Bush, Clinton and the Generals; a paperback copy of Luc Sante's Low Life; and the 2002 IKEA catalog.

Michael Daddino, Monday, 1 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm perfectly aware of Oriental City in Colindale, and the Japan Centre and most other Cutie stockists and Japanese stuff. I just wanted Momus to send me stuff for free. IS THAT SO BAD?

The DDR machine at Oriental City skips, by the way.

And anyway, hasn't Toko shut down there now? That was a fabulous shop. I think it's still going under a different name but it's not the same. Ashiya books is wonderful, despite charging ridiculous import cd prices. And also, when I last got Cutie @ JC, it was £5.40 - same price as OC, whot?

And cut price sushi MINGS! Fresh sushi yum yum.

Sarah, Monday, 1 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't have any of these things. Despite being a 'professional' all I carry is a travelcard holder, which goes in my pocket. In it I keep my bank card and swipe card.

Nick, Monday, 1 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

chris, Monday, 1 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'd like to add that I've now eaten the Snickers. And replaced it with SWISH NEW WALKMAN, mobile, and an old mixtape tracklisting.

Sarah, Monday, 1 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Gareth, yes, I read The Clay Machine Gun in June, after you recommended it to Tom. Good stuff, I thought, and nice to finally read something else with the same feel as The Master and Margarita. I haven't actually started Insects yet but I will report back when I'm done.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Monday, 1 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

faux fur leopardskin pencilcase with loads of ballpoint pens, pencils, and highlighters; wallet with a piddling amount of money in it; chococat checkbook; bank statement; stila lipstick

This actually makes me look far more organized than I actually am, because I just cleaned my purse out on Friday.

Nicole, Monday, 1 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't know exactly as I am currently unable to lift my bag as my arm is killing me as I had to have a big injection in it this morning and it hurts like hell. But the contents are usually quite similar: wallet, house keys, travel card, office security pass, mobile phone, lip balm, lipstick, lipgloss, comb, CD walkman, new batteries, bits of paper, cigarettes, lighter, sunglasses (why? This is England in October) and millions and millions of tissues - I find that filling your handbag with used-looking tissues is a great way to stop nosy bouncers looking in it.

Emma, Monday, 1 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yay useless threads on monday mornings. . .let's see. . .A bag of caramel apple chips, a plum, hairbrush, allergy nose spray, some sour gumballs, a maya angelou article my mom gave me, check stub, fake car insurance, target receipt, free movie rental coupon, silly little rave bracelet that spells my name, hello kitty organizer, calculator, hello kitty hair ties, some film that needs to be developed, emery board, loose sunflower seeds, wallet, asthma inhaler, carmex, bonne bell lipgloss, lipstick, altoids, tampons, antidepressants, broken hello kitty watch, keys, a pack of chococat bandages, lots of tissues and tops to water bottles long gone.

Samantha, Monday, 1 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My purse comes from H&M. It cost me $5. It's fantastic.

Ally, Monday, 1 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Today I'm using my canvas tote from Escalator records, I never see anyone else with one and it goes in the wash. Right now it stinks of cigarettes because I had it with me when I went out Saturday night. In it I have a compact silver umbrella, nine CDs to listen to at work, house keys on a Burger King Pokemon keychain one of my coworker's kids gave me, car keys on a stuffed Chococat keychain I bought myself at the Garden State Plaza Sanrio store, cellphone, palm pilot, 20% off coupon for Bed Bath + Beyond I'm going to use towards a new electric toothbrush, three blue uniball gel metallic pens, black + white dotted Marimekko purse with atm, charge, gym, Club 47 film, PATH, A&P Bonus Saving and metro cards. Driver's license and insurance card, St. Jude medal, ticket stub from Apples in Stereo show from 2 weeks ago, receipt from dinner at Cuban restaurant, just about enough cash for ordering lunch today.

Lesley Higgins, Monday, 1 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It is a black shoulder satchel thing with a Glenfiddich logo on it & it contains : 5 blue ballpoint pens, 3 black ones, a red one, a black felt tip marker pen, a paperback copy of "Crime & Punishment" (Maryann's), paperback copy of "Ripening Seed" by Colette, letter to Andrew Tolley that I keep forgetting to post, 4 cassette tapes, walkman (Di's) & headphones (Richard's), my diary, paperback copy of "The Informer" by Liam O'Flaherty, part of today's Otago Daily Times, 9 used syringes, 1 not-used ditto, bunch of tissue paper, 6 condoms, concession cards from Echo Records & Real Groovy records, 4 envelopes.

duane, Tuesday, 2 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Gareth did you not once say "Omon Ra" was Pelevin's worst bk? this memory could easily be based on just the fact that i know you've mentioned him a few times here & there & maybe someone else said it. 'cause anyway that's the only one I ever read & i thought it was choice.

duane, Tuesday, 2 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Duane
are you an addict or a diabetic ?

anthony, Tuesday, 2 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dope addict.

duane, Tuesday, 2 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

gareth, Tuesday, 2 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I walk to work and try to travel light, or as light as I can with a laptop. So my laptop bag contains a biro, a notebook (about 1/3 full), 4 boxless cassettes (compilation tapes from 96/97, and one from this year), 2 bills I should pay right now, and a couple of dead batteries. It doesn't contain the laptop because thats what I'm using to write this, ha.

Tom, Tuesday, 2 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What's with all these "What's in yer..." threads?

But alright... wallet, mobile, day planner diary that I never use, Lollies stickers and flyers, some with lyrics scribbled on the back, comb, eyeliner, lucky pen and spare pens, whatever book I'm reading (still savouring Live Through This at the mo), mysterious swizzle sticks from cocktails I don't remember drinking, an A to Z, an address book which is completely out of date due to all my friends' current numbers being on the mobile, a few old tube passes and plane tickets, and schedules for the Amtrak Hudson River Empire Line and the Luton-Gatwick Thameslink.

Kate the Saint, Tuesday, 2 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I left a bag at my stepmom's during our travels this week and called her to enumerate what was in it in case there was anything time-sensitive. A bit embarrassing. Among the detritus, a 2-month-old unpaid electric bill, an unpaid parking ticket, strapping tape, several rolls of pennies, a dirty tissue, a Black Sun cassette tape, a couple of tampons (if I remember correctly, their paper wrapping has come off), a copy of a grant application I just submitted, several metal CDs of Scott's, a mythology textbook, a diaper, crayons, some matchbox cars.

Maria :D, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 01:43 (eighteen years ago)

Any one carry a spare ILXor in case of emergencies?

ailsa, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 07:22 (eighteen years ago)

I change handbags quite regularly. You'd have thought that would mean I wouldn't have a lot of junk to cart around, but apparently not. Today I have my black Radley bag with me :

http://www.johnlewis.com/jl_assets/product/230192550.jpg

in which there is :

Black leather purse containing credit, debit, store loyalty, library and work swipe cards, photos of my children, 6 first class stamps, my driving licence, a credit card sized laminated diary card listing my husband's shift pattern for the whole year (it's complicated and I can never remember where he's supposed to be on any given day), fifty five quid in notes, and £11.86 in loose change.

Hairbrush
Small pack of tissues in a Cath Kidston fabric holder (wot I made)
A keyring (with a Welsh lovespoon on it) with house keys, work keys + car park fob
Car keys
Phone
iPod
Emery board
Swiss army knife card
Ventolin inhaler
Mini pink filofax
Pen
Tube of Trebor extra strong mints
Small plastic bag containing some cross-stitch I'm currently doing, since I might have a lot of borin' sitting around to do today.
Lipsyl
Sheer lipstick (No7, Excite), blue eye drops, mini eye shadow collection (Clinique, Strawberry Fudge), mascara (Mac Mascara X in dark brown) and a tiny bottle of Estee Lauder Attraction perfume.
A banana and an apple

Any one carry a spare ILXor in case of emergencies?

haha, that's what I was thinking.

A lot of ILx0rs are asthmatic. Also, I need a better bag.

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 13:24 (eighteen years ago)

I feel such a scruff, I think I am the only laydee with zero portable make up! In fact, I am not even wearing ANY today because - well, the real answer is that I am so demoralised at my job that I don't need to make the effort, also not going out or seeing anyone, AND going to gim at lunch would just mean reapplication after shower... yeah anyway! I am such a scruffy UGGER!

Sarah, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 13:24 (eighteen years ago)

Hey, I don't have any make up either. In fact, the girls seem to share an inordinate amount of paper and books, more than make up.

emil.y, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 13:36 (eighteen years ago)

Me either! I don't ever wear makeup and feel a little bad for it but, eh.

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 13:37 (eighteen years ago)

In my bag:

Vanity Fair (the book)
Glasses case
Scarf
Loo roll (for nasal use)
Phone charger
Wireless internet card (just bought)
BT bill (that reminds me...)
Promo CDs
Dictaphone and tapes
Tobacco, rizla, filters
Floppy disc
Daily contact lenses
Deodorant
Diary
USB adapter for MP3 player
Batteries (AA)

braveclub, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 13:42 (eighteen years ago)

Floppy disc

!!!!!

Nickalicious, you are no longer the caveman.

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 13:43 (eighteen years ago)

I feel such a scruff, I think I am the only laydee with zero portable make up!

Well, I might port it, but I certainly don't wear it. I can't stand make up, and only put it on sometimes because it seems to please other people to see people wear it. As in, I feel it makes me look less weird to other people. I am starting to be at an age when people notice that you don't wear makeup.

Strange logic, I know.

accentmonkey, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 17:40 (eighteen years ago)

Good lord did I carry a lot of crap in my bag back in the day! Including sandwiches! At present it's just a copy of the last Zadie Smith, a scarf, a notebook, an mp3 player and headphones, some envelopes, and a few pens. (But I think this is because I now have multiple bags, so I have to switch back and forth, and things don't wind up collecting in there over months and months.)

nabisco, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 18:32 (eighteen years ago)

zadie smith + scarf = anglo scarfy?

river wolf, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 18:35 (eighteen years ago)

cell phone; house, mailbox and car keys (all separate rings); chapstick w/sunscreen; passcard for work; checkbook/credit card/wallet thing; mechanical pencil (0.9 mm); mechanical pencil, no lead (0.5 mm); 3 pens from the Muckleshoot casino; last paystub; wine storage contract; badge lanyard from last place of employment.

I don't do makeup either. The makeup thread convinced me to buy some mascara and I impulsed some powder, eyeshadow, and a lip pencil. But every time I put any on, I just want to wash my face immediately.

Jaq, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 19:16 (eighteen years ago)

Last night I connected my home computer to the internet for the first time in about a year, so I will have no further need for prehistoric floppy disks!
