The 91 Bus from Trafalgar Square to Crouch End Broadway has won the prestigious BUS OF THE YEAR award.
http://www.tfl.gov.uk/buses/press-773.shtml

Is this because it is the bus route the most ILXors live on?
(Is that claim true?)

Pete (Pete), Friday, 10 October 2003 12:29 (twenty-one years ago)

hurrah! the 91 saved me on the day of the power cut = it is obviously the best bus. also it has been good for getting home after faps, too. hurrah.

toby (tsg20), Friday, 10 October 2003 12:33 (twenty-one years ago)

i have never been on the 91, i dont really like the look of it

charltonlido (gareth), Friday, 10 October 2003 12:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Damn bendy bus hatas! It's not even a routemaster. Bah.

Sarah (starry), Friday, 10 October 2003 12:35 (twenty-one years ago)

bah, the 205 has been robbed

stevem (blueski), Friday, 10 October 2003 12:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Delighted staff from the route were greeted by ex-Eastenders actress Patsy Palmer

how appropriate

stevem (blueski), Friday, 10 October 2003 12:36 (twenty-one years ago)

the 106 should have won

charltonlido (gareth), Friday, 10 October 2003 12:37 (twenty-one years ago)

my guesses at why others failed:

271 - too trendy
19, 38 - too yuppie
43 - no identity of its own

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 10 October 2003 12:37 (twenty-one years ago)

How I love seeing the little yellow cheeks turn round the corner telling me my way home is here.

Though they need to sort out the going round Euston thing. And of course the 91 gets to go over the ramp at St Pancras at the moment too!

Pete (Pete), Friday, 10 October 2003 12:38 (twenty-one years ago)

the 91 may be fairly cutting edge, but it has been done before. Laurent Garnier is a big fan but I'm not feeling it. The 91 is not what Derrick May envisaged.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 10 October 2003 12:39 (twenty-one years ago)

now that the 253 has been neutured, i think the 29 is a good bus, for an interesting journey

charltonlido (gareth), Friday, 10 October 2003 12:40 (twenty-one years ago)

The 91 has a great route but its reliability has left a little to be desired in my book.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 10 October 2003 12:43 (twenty-one years ago)

The 91 reaches parts of London other routes don't reach (well a small bit of the Hornsey Road). ILx nearby residents, people who have used it recently in parentheses:

Me
Carsmile
Mrs Carsmile
Anna
Marianna
Tracer
Ricardo
Dave Q
Kate
(Tom)
(Emma)
(Toby)
(Alang)
.....

Pete (Pete), Friday, 10 October 2003 12:43 (twenty-one years ago)

i hate buses that 'take you on a journey' - i'm with Ronan on this one

stevem (blueski), Friday, 10 October 2003 12:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I love the 91.When I were younger I used to live in Crouch End. I'd get on the 91, go upstairs, sit at the front, and grab the bar by the window and pretend I was riding a motorbike all the way to Trafalgar Square. I was 22.

My top tip. The 121. A hidden gem. My second to top tip: Don't stay on as far as Freezywater.

Badger (Badger), Friday, 10 October 2003 12:46 (twenty-one years ago)

steve otm.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 10 October 2003 12:52 (twenty-one years ago)

The 205 is shit, if only for that ridiculous diversion to Marylebone Station forecourt which adds about 10 minutes on to its journey time in the mornings.

I am personally loving the 253 at the moment, connecting as it does Angel Sainsburys, my flat and my Dad's flat.

Ricardo (RickyT), Friday, 10 October 2003 12:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I been riding the 91 home from Birkbeck every night, and every night it has been punctual and pleasant.

When is that bread and milk on top of that one bus shelter (a few stops before holloway road) going to biodegrade away?

marianna, Friday, 10 October 2003 12:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Pete the 91 doesn't go to my house. It is a cruel thing to suggest it does. I am stuck with the passionless 43 or, if I walk down, the 4, which goes on a curious little adventure out Seven Sisters Rd before swinging back towards Angel.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 10 October 2003 12:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I have a love/hate relationship with the 137. But when I need it most it's never there for me.

Meursault (Meursault), Friday, 10 October 2003 12:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Gah, I meant 153 not 253!

Ricardo (RickyT), Friday, 10 October 2003 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

the Marylebone 'diversion' only added about 2 minutes to the journey today, sometimes i catch the 205 FROM Marylebone anyway so that suits me fine. it's good to not drop Marylebone into the mix too early tho sometimes as it can sometimes be more for heads than feet (ditto Great Portland St), the Kings X humpback remix was a nice touch tho - didn't hear that coming - and peaking with Pentonville was a masterstroke - everyone was jumping at that point.

stevem (blueski), Friday, 10 October 2003 13:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I miss buses. living in Brixton they were great, but it's a bit far to use them to get home to walthamstow. Having said that, we took the bus home on wed. night, which was nice. I'm not particularly impressed by the buses available though. The 48 has no soul.

One of these days I will take the 123 to Ilford though...

Vicky (Vicky), Friday, 10 October 2003 13:04 (twenty-one years ago)

marianna inspired me - what is the daftest thing you've seen on a bus shelter roof?

stevem (blueski), Friday, 10 October 2003 13:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I love the 4 in the autumn. Specifically for that bit where it goes the length of Tufnell Park Road. It's really beautiful.

The 232 has to be one of the shittiest bus routes ever.

Badger (Badger), Friday, 10 October 2003 13:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Go ninety! Go one! Go ninety! Go one!

(And actually I have rare praise for London Transport. After leaving my purse on a 43 this morning someone has handed it in. The bank tell me it was found in Stoke Newington (!?) and then taken to a bus depot in Bethnal Green. This does seem to defy logic, but inside were all my cards, paper money, coins, earings and two cinema tickets.)

Anna (Anna), Friday, 10 October 2003 13:12 (twenty-one years ago)

The 205 Marylebone diversion is OK if you are travelling East in the morning. West is the killer.

Ricardo (RickyT), Friday, 10 October 2003 13:23 (twenty-one years ago)

The 4 is evil, as it never arrives. Now the 134, there's a great bus.

I have never taken the 91, and now can never do so for fear of being passé and behind the times.

cis (cis), Friday, 10 October 2003 13:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Hurrah for the 436 and the 36 say I.

Sarah (starry), Friday, 10 October 2003 13:37 (twenty-one years ago)

My current fave bus is the 344 because it goes across Southwark Bridge, something very few people or vehicles ever do. When I got it one day by accident I was so happy. It runs very close to the Lord Clyde.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 10 October 2003 13:39 (twenty-one years ago)

The 344 must be a new bus(the 3 is a give-away). Thank-you our Ken for giving us more great bus routes.

Pete (Pete), Friday, 10 October 2003 13:46 (twenty-one years ago)

The 221 is nice too, it has to be said.

Favourite bus routes outside of London? 85a- Exeter to Torquay.

Badger (Badger), Friday, 10 October 2003 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I have decided that the 38 is my favourite London bus route:

It has Routemasters

It got me from the Freaky Trigger Club Nite to Victoria in one fell swoop, no messing.

I'm not too keen on the X90:

The price of a Night Owl return has gone up from £6 to £7.

They will keep mvoing the bus stop around. It's gone from Traf Sq to some road round the corner from Traf Square to Grosvenor Gardens to Buckingham Palace Road! I had to ask the Oxford Tube driver where his rival's bus stop had gone. Madness I tell you!

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 10 October 2003 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Badger, the 221 is nice, especially the section from Wood Green to New Southgate via Bounds Green Road. It is however, a shadow of its former self. When I was a kid it went all the way from Edgware to Holborn Circus.

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 10 October 2003 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

The best bus route is the 207 followed by the E8. I quite like the 65, and the 83 too.

Never been on the 91.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 10 October 2003 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

My favourite section of the 221 is the bit between New Southgate and Mill Hill Broadway. I live just off Bounds Green Road, so it's a bit dull to me, that bit.

Badger (Badger), Friday, 10 October 2003 17:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I've decided I hate routemasters. They're just too uncomfortable.

My favourite route is the 341 because it takes me almost to my front door but a few of the vehicles used on that route have incredibly limited leg-room between the seats. The 243 is another route I like as it seems to be the best bet for a quick, reliable journey from Waterloo/Aldwych to Dalston. My most hated is the 67. It's local for me but incredibly unreliable. Standing in Kingsland High Street for over an hour on a Saturday afternoon as dozens or every other route go by is not my idea of fun.

David (David), Friday, 10 October 2003 17:44 (twenty-one years ago)

The 91 has the advantage of being largely empty most of the time, as opposed to the hated 29 which also often takes half an hour to get from one end of Wood Green High Street to the other. My favourite is the W3 because it runs from Finsbury Park up to 1 a.m. every night (thus allowing me to get home easily from work) AND it goes through Alexandra Palace - the view from the top deck across London is lovely late at night. The drivers don't look very happy though, the poor dears.

udu wudu (udu wudu), Friday, 10 October 2003 21:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes I hate the 29 as well. I tend to turn dislike of the crowds on a bus into dislike of the route itself. I hate being on any bus approaching Manor House from the south and you suddenly* see the crowds surging forward to get on (having got off the tube at Manor House).

* this is particularly true of the 29 because it goes round the corner and then you suddenly see them (and they surge more than for a 141 because they only see it at the last minute and are momentarily scared of being caught at the back of the 'queue').

David (David), Friday, 10 October 2003 21:20 (twenty-one years ago)

the 91 hurt my feelings last night because the driver let a guy with a pit bull get on - which then tried to kill me!

marianna, Friday, 17 October 2003 14:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Once after leaving work at 6AM, I caught the 73 from Victoria to Oxford Street. So far so dull, yeah?

Then I caught the 19 from Tottenham Court Road to Finsbury Park station. It took 10 minutes. I timed it. Ten minutes! You couldn't even tube it so quickly.
