"CABIN FEVER"
(2003) (Rider Strong, Jordan Ladd) (R)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
QUICK TAKE:
Horror: A small group of friends tries to avoid contracting a contagious, fleshing eating virus while vacationing in a cabin in the backwoods.
PLOT:
Paul (RIDER STRONG), his longtime friend Karen (JORDAN LADD), another couple, Jeff (JOEY KERN) and Marcy (CERINA VINCENT), along with their boorish friend Bert (JAMES DeBOLLO), have arrived at a cabin in the woods for a week of rest and relaxation.
Little do they know, however, that they're about to come face to face with the horrors of an infectious, flesh eating virus. After a bloody encounter with a stranger infected with it - that draws the attention of Deputy Winston (GIUSEPPE ANDREWS) - various members of the small group start to contract the disease. As their condition progressively worsens, the surviving members do what they can to avoid getting it themselves, all while dealing with some less than welcoming locals.
WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
If they're into horror films, they just might.
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: R
For strong violence and gore, sexuality, language and brief drug use.
CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
RIDER STRONG plays one of the young vacationers who wants his friendship with Karen to progress into romance. He uses strong profanity and fondles her while she sleeps. He ends up having sex with Marcy.
JORDAN LADD plays his longtime friend who's upset with how they dealt with a sick person at their door.
JOEY KERN plays the initially laidback member of the group who smokes pot, drinks, has sex with Marcy and uses strong profanity.
CERINA VINCENT plays his girlfriend who has sex with him as well as Paul.
JAMES DeBOLLO plays their rude, crude and boorish friend who smokes and acts like a jerk most of the time.
GIUSEPPE ANDREWS plays the odd local deputy who likes to party and drinks and drives.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
The following is a brief summary of the content found in this R-rated horror film. Profanity consists of at least 135 "f" words, while other expletives and colorful phrases are uttered. Sexually related dialogue (some of it explicit) is also present, as are several sexual encounters (with movement, nudity and sounds) and other fooling around.
Violence consists of several bloody killings, some vicious dog attacks, and people hitting or wounding others. All of that, coupled with the results of the flesh-eating disease results in an extreme amount of blood and gore. Those scenes and others, including various jump scenes and scary music, might be unsettling, suspenseful or frightening to some viewers (particularly younger ones and those with low tolerance levels for such material), but others may find little if any of the proceedings that way.
Various characters have varying degrees of bad attitudes, some drink, some smoke and a few briefly smoke pot. Should you still be concerned about the film's appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home, you may want to look more closely at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content.
For those concerned with flashes of flight on the screen, some of that occurs during a lighting storm.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ALCOHOL OR DRUG USE
We see some liquor called "Arrogant bastard ale."
Some in the group drink beer around a campfire. A stranger then shows up and the group doesn't want him to join them until he says that he'll have to go off and smoke his weed by himself. That man and some in the group then smoke pot and drink more beer. Bert then states that he's only going to drink beer for the rest of their trip. The stranger then leaves and a comment is made about him coming back and bringing the weed.
Deputy Winston shows up at the cabin where he tells Karen to go back inside and have a "big 40" (beer).
Jeff leaves with some beer.
Winston and others drink.
Winston drinks and drives.
BLOOD/GORE
A man carries a dead rabbit through the woods where he comes across a dead dog on the ground (it's slightly bloody). He then proceeds to open the dog and blood squirts onto his face.
We see a guy's urine stream.
Bert encounters a sick looking person in the woods, fires a warning shot and accidentally hits the person (with bloody results).
A person tells a campfire story about a mass murderer who has bound and gagged various bloody people in a bowling alley. The killer then hits a person on the head with a small hammer, resulting in more blood. We then hear that he hacked off their limbs (and partially see that, including a leg moving from the impact of the cutting). We then see him bowling with bloody, severed body parts and then see a severed head in the ball return.
A bloody guy is suddenly at the door.
A sick person spits up a lot of blood and then does projectile vomiting of blood (and we later see a lot of blood inside a truck).
We see some flashbacks of earlier bloody images.
We see a dead body floating in some water.
A woman on a farm guts a live pig (hanging upside down). We don't see the actual cutting, but do see two guys' reactions, hear the pig squeal and then see its bloody intestines hanging out. The woman then has blood on her gloves and face.
We see blood all over a truck.
After fondling Karen, Paul removes his hand to reveal blood on it and we then see blood all over her and the bed (from the infectious disease).
Karen's legs are very bloody and she then does some projectile vomiting of blood.
Bert coughs up some blood and then has some blood on his neck and hands.
The skin on Marcy's back is all ripped up and covered in blisters. Unaware of that, she shaves her legs in the tub and eventually sees the bloody wounds on her legs. We then see lots of blood on her and in the bathwater.
We see a decomposed body floating in some water. Paul climbs down a ladder to look at it, but the ladder breaks away and he falls onto the body in the water.
Bert is very bloody and wipes blood on a tree as a decoy.
We see a bloody, severed foot.
We see a dog feeding on a person.
A person rolls another presumably dead person over to reveal a bloody, partially skeletal face (and that person is still alive). That person then does a mercy killing (we don't see the impact, but hear it and see blood splatter onto the first person).
Several people end up killing each other (including being shot with bloody results, another accidentally shooting a third with bloody results, and another having a screwdriver jammed into the side of their head).
A person hides in a dark cave and finds a very bloody, dead body with what looked like worms in their ear.
A car strikes a deer, resulting in it being severely wounded and bloody (it flails about). A person then shoots and kills the deer (with blood then on his face).
A person spits blood onto another person.
A man's face is covered in blood.
A man returns to the cabin to find blood everywhere.
A person is riddled with gunfire and is bloody.

Marcy asks Bert if he has any more smokes, and he lies that he doesn't.
An old man and store clerk says that his rifle is for "niggers." While this initially seems like a racist comment, we later learn that he's just speaking "urban" and gives the gun to some black friends/acquaintances.
Bert steals a candy bar from a country store, but is caught.
A person makes the comment, "Don't be a f*cking retard." The term "fruitcake" is later used; Bert carries a rifle that he says he's going to use to shoot "gay squirrels;" and when Paul asks if this is a date when he and Karen kiss, she responds, "Don't be gay."

Some locals chase after and try to kill Bert.
FRIGHTENING SCENES

A menacing dog barks and growls at some people, but flees when a warning shot is fired. We later hear the dog off in the distance.
Paul hears sounds in the woods around him at night.
A menacing dog digs at a shed where a sick Karen is being held. A warning shot is then fired and the dog flees.

MUSIC (SCARY/TENSE)
An extreme amount of suspenseful and ominous music plays in the film.
MUSIC (INAPPROPRIATE)

PROFANITY
At least 135 "f" words (2 used with "mother," 1 used sexually), 39 "s" words, 2 slang terms each using female ("p*ssy") and male ("d*ck," "pr*ck") genitals, 6 asses (4 used with "hole"), 3 hells, 1 crap, 1 damn, 10 uses of "G-damn," 7 of "Oh my God," 5 of "Oh God," 3 each of "Jesus" and "My God" and 1 use each of "Christ," "For Christ's sakes," "God," "Jesus Christ" and "Oh Lord" as exclamations.
SEX/NUDITY
Marcy playfully puts her hand on Jeff's clothed crotch and kisses him as he drives. They then do some passionate kissing.
We see Jeff and Marcy on a bed. He's shirtless on top of her and then lifts her shirt to expose her bare belly. Paul then walks in on them and makes some comment about safe sex. A bit later, we see them having sex with movement, sounds and the sight of her bare breasts. She then gets on top of him (he's on his stomach) and it's implied that she puts her finger (or something) in his rectum (we see his reaction).
We see Karen in a bikini while sunbathing. She and Paul (who's shirtless) then passionately kiss. When Paul then asks if this is a date, she responds, "Don't be gay."
Karen talks about masturbating with a shower massager when she was younger and one of the guys comments that she "came every time" (she acknowledges that). She then says that she was thus disappointed the first time she had sex. One of the guys then jokes about masturbating, with a dog licking his "balls," that its tongue went up his "ass" and that he "came right then."
The camera focuses on Marcy's clothed butt as she walks along (in slow motion).
Winston makes some comment about "five pounds of dangling meat" (referring to a penis) and women, and then states that he knows he's going to get "p*ssy" at a party.
Karen and Paul "spoon" in bed (clothed) while sleeping. Paul then kisses her head (she's still sleeping) and runs his hand down her chest, partially pulls up her shirt, and then places his hand under the covers at her crotch. She then makes some pleasured sounds (while still asleep) as we see movement under the covers of his hand at her crotch and hear wet/juicy sounds from that action (but that turns out to be from blood rather than lubrication).
We see partial glimpses (bare butt) of a nude woman lying on a bed, but views of anything else explicit are blocked.
Marcy comments on their situation being like being on a plane that's going down where you want to grab the person next to you and "f*ck the sh*t out of them." We then see her having sex on top of Paul, with movement, sounds and views of her bare breasts (her butt is below the covers). After they're done, Paul then pours Listerine on his penis (not seen), apparently in a cleansing move.
We see Marcy's bare breasts.
About scratches on her back (that are from the infection and not sex like she believes), Marcy tells Paul that he really did a number on her back.

We then see him bowling with bloody, severed body parts and then see a severed head in the ball return.
A sick person tries to take the group's truck, prompting one in the group to shoot at him, hitting the truck. Another uses a tire iron (or something similar) to poke at him and a window is broken. Bert fires some warning shots and hits the truck.

QUICK TAKE:
Comedy: An odd but beloved crime-fighting, singing star, who speaks a language all his own, battles an evil
corporate CEO and other villains.
PLOT:
Pootie Tang (LANCE CROUTHER) is an odd Renaissance man - with a unique language all his own -- who's
just as proficient at crime fighting as he is in making movies, albums and public service announcements that
warn children against the consuming of products from Corporate America.
While that makes him a hero among the everyday folk, it also means he's public enemy number one to both
petty criminals - such as Dirty Dee (REG E. CATHEY) who revels in being as filthy as possible - and corporate
CEOs such as Dick Lecter (ROBERT VAUGHN) who's upset with how Pootie is affecting sales of his various
products.
Accordingly, Lecter orders his right-hand man, Frank (DAVID ATTEL), to get Pootie to sign an exclusive
contract hawking their latest endeavor, and when that fails, he sends Ireenie (JENNIFER COOLIDGE) to use
her feminine wiles & sexuality to discover Pootie's secret source of power. That turns out to be the belt that his
father (CHRIS ROCK) gave him as a boy and that he uses like a whip on the various villains he encounters.
As he goes about his successful ways and hangs out with his friends including Trucky (JB SMOOVE) and JB
(CHRIS ROCK) and deals with Biggie Shorty (WANDA SYKES), a woman who may or may not be a
prostitute but does dance around on the street corners dressed like one and desperately wants to get him in bed,
Pootie must contend with Lecter's underhanded ways. They not only end up putting him in odd situations, such
as being coerced into getting to know Stacy (CATHY TRIEN), a farm girl whose sheriff father is intent on
marrying her off to the next available man, but also present the crime fighter with the greatest challenges he's
had to face yet.
WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
If they're fans of someone in the cast, they might.
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: PG-13
For sex related material, language and drug content.
CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
LANCE CROUTHER plays an odd, but cool and smooth crime-fighting hero who's quite popular, a role model
for kids due to his stance against the various evils that Lecter peddles, and speaks a language of his own that
everyone in the movie can understand, but no one in the audience will. He also uses his belt like a whip while
fighting various weapons.
JB SMOOVE plays his best friend who uses some profanity and is apparently seduced by Ireenie into giving up
Pootie's secrets.
WANDA SYKES plays a woman who may or may not be a hooker who dances around on the street corner
dressed like one. She uses some profanity, and wishes to and finally succeeds in bedding Pootie.
ROBERT VAUGHN plays a corporate CEO who wants Pootie taken care of when he realizes the role model
has caused sales of his various products to drop.
JENNIFER COOLIDGE plays a woman who uses her sexuality and apparently beds at least one man to assist
Lecter in his evil scheme.
REG E. CATHEY plays a local thug who revels in being as dirty as possible and tries to buy some drugs from
another criminal.
CHRIS ROCK plays several characters, including Pootie's disciplinarian father and one of Pootie's friends who
is fed up with another friend who repeats everyone's thoughts just moments after they express them. He also
uses some profanity as the latter.
CATHY TRIEN plays a country girl who becomes enamored with Pootie after her sheriff father tries to marry
her off to him.
DAVID ATTEL plays Lecter's right-hand man who smokes a few times.

HOW OTHERS RATED THIS MOVIE
Curious if this title is entertaining, any good, and/or has any artistic merit?
Then read OUR TAKE of this film.
(Note: The "Our Take" review of this title examines the film's artistic merits and does not take into account any of the
possibly objectionable material listed below).
OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
The following is a quick look at the content found in this comedy that's been rated PG-13. Profanity consists of
a bleeped out "f" word, along with more than 10 "s" words, some slang terms for sex and male genitals, and
various other expletives and colorful phrases.
Some non-explicit, sexually related dialogue is present, while various woman come on to Pootie in a sexual
fashion, including one woman who apparently beds him and his friend for nefarious reasons (but nothing
explicit is seen), and another woman who finally succeeds in doing the same to Pootie, thus fulfilling her quest
to do so. Yet another woman becomes aroused -- when he spreads the contents of a fresh pie across his chest
and neck -- and thus jumps him.
Various characters, who all have bad attitudes, attack and/or try to harm the protagonist, and he fights them off
with various punches and his belt that he uses like a whip on them. They and others try to shoot him (as he
dodges or deflects the bullets), while another man comes at him with a switchblade. A few characters drink,
while we also briefly see some drug use and a character trying to sell drugs after getting a kid to try them.
Some instances of imitative behavior, including the protagonist speaking in a unique language that no viewers
will understand, are also present.
All of that said, none of what's present is meant to be taken seriously, although some younger kids might not
get the jokes and/or parody element. Thus, should you still be concerned about the film and its appropriateness
for anyone in your home who may want to see it, we suggest that you take a closer look at our detailed content
listings for more specific information about what's present and occurs in it.
