Mentors: C or D?

Have you ever had a mentor? Is it advisable to have one? I'm increasingly thinking that, no, it's not, that a mentor will inevitably let you down and it's not worth bothering in the first place. Even so, only temporarily or provisionally, is it worth having one? Or being one? What is a mentor, anyway?

I ask because I'm worrying more and more that the professor I came to work with at my present school isn't terribly well regarded amongst students or faculty. I've heard some stories about the unreasonable amount of work he's dumped on TA's and RA's. More than this, though, I wonder if I'm only seeing what I want to see in him, not what's really there.

Mentors are something I haven't really experienced since I was in school. And my experience of them was kind of dud. Any mentor which you are assigned, as part of some official program tends to be kind of dud. It's done as a duty, not out of genuine desire to teach or mentor, and therefore ends up kind of exploitative.

I have had mentor-figures, but, as they say, you don't find your guru, your guru finds you. It tends to be a far less formal arrangement.

A mentor is a guide, rather than a teacher or professor.

I had a mentor assigned when I started this job. that worked for ahiwle, but now I have much more helpful relationships with other people, that just grew naturally. I think this is partially because my oficial mentor was not well liked = it is good to have a mentor who gets on with people that you want to get on with (if that makes sense).

I would like a mentor.
Seriously. I've been trying to do all this (what I do) by the seat of my pants for a long time and I would really like somebody to sit me down and say "hey now, there's no need to make yourself crazy, there's a simple, straightforward way of doing this."
