my first and only painting again
I don't write anymore...too low. So all I have is stories I wrote in junior high. Hrm.
God, this is depressing. I don't do anything anymore.

another poem

I climb into his silver vw
we go downtown
to a place that is dark and quiet
there is just a family celebrating a birthday and us.
we sit in the back near the kitchen
i order duck and mussels
he orders chicken stirfry
he orders tonic
i order gin
that causes pause

I made a couple of computer games once using 'Klik & Play', and I have a tape of the band I used to be in, but due to its cassette format I have no idea how to MP3 it.

DG, Sunday, 30 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i haven't written a decent story for three months. how depressing.

The snowfalkes bite at my cheeks. Before this, in a life more temperate, I had imagined it would feel like kisses. I am not delighted with the gently closing sky. It is trying to find a way to be very tender and it its stumbling. There is a recovering and a clutching for handholds, but I want something more than this diffusion of quiet, these faltering tendernesses.

pictures

Sadly, I haven't done anything visual for the sake of visual art, but I have done some flyers for some shows I've promoted at the mighty all ages Koo's Cafe in Santa Ana last year. Everyone from Pinback to Oxes to Mike Watt to Bright Eyes to Charalambides to Lexaunculpt to Sultans to god knows what else: Flyers here

music

This link contains a recent mix CD I did a few weeks ago, if you like glitchy breakbeaty type stuff...(AFX, Mouse on Mars, Richard Devine, are all represented here). Also, at the bottom are some covers I did under the name "Basin Jently".

Oh my goodness, that last entry is a hard act to follow.

Okay, here's the last time I messed with poetry. I wrote it about two years ago.....

A bitter song on the jukebox Cuts out the background sounds A gaggle of friends stand chattering

Drinking in sips I visibly shrink Clasped in the vastness of a barstool Distance grows with their laughter

In triumph with her dazzling blond hair Fran stands in their centre I shrank from the glare

Averting my eyes As if from a sunkissed glacier With cheekbones carved from fresh ice

But the air stank of stale beer Frostbitten, I left Peppered with blemishes.

File under juvenilia. Failing that, the dustbin.

I scanned in a page of random doodlings for an art project, but I can't find a place on the net to put it. That Ofoto site that I used to post that pic of me reduces the resolution quite severely, and I don't want to start a website just to post a pic, so where should I go?

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Tuesday, 2 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Telephone Company

The Electricity Company

The Cable Company

a utili-triptych

(p.s. DG: use the sound input on your computer.)

I still want to hear jel's psychotic lo-fi toy noise or whatever he described it as previously. I'd also like to hear Brian's music, since he's one of those people who seems to be on every mailing list I ever subscribe to, but since he has provided us with good mp3s and cover versions and Oxes flyers I won't grumble.

DG, what the last poster said. Tape player headphone socket -> line or microphone input of soundcard should work ok, with careful level adjustment. Or I'd offer to do it for you but I'm rubbish and would end up not doing it or screwing it up so I won't.

I do nothing. Nothing creative, nothing useful. So I have nothing to show off. Maybe one day...

Rebecca, Tuesday, 2 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm never sure how to do this

Look! It's a Nintendo Gameboy with a Jetpack!

Look! It's a picture of my face!

jamesmichaelward, Tuesday, 2 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I paitnted a picture of love. YOU CANT SEE IT! I need my privacy. please. In some forms.

How can you stand me? I mean, I never shut up.

Oxes is goodses. A rockin' three-piece live Kids In The Hall sketch.. up there with Trumans Water, Climax Golden Twins, and Thinking Fellers for most fun live shows.

(Hope you like the Mp3s... :)

Ich habe eine Schlange
Meine Schlange hast viel Durst
Er geht in zum Kafe
Er hat Getranke und eine Wurst

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Tuesday, 2 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I try writing songs. I also try performing others' songs - I have Franklin Bruno's "Keeping the Weekend Free" down pat. My cojones aren't big enough to offer a link to such things - hell, I just "performed" for a relative stranger for the very first time last week. Yes, it was the Bruno song in question. Tiny steps, kids, tiny steps.

Of course, I also have poetry & a smattering of fiction @ my blessed web presence (cue gratuitous linkage) - check the POESING & FACTION portions of said presence if you're curious. Most of my poems are from my post-high-school / pre-college-take-two period, though I'm trying to get back on the wagon. Writing's a bitch, though, especially if you're impatient and extremely judgemental, and suffer from a crippling sense of creative inadequacy.

We should start a Tuff Love Mutual Admiration Society for our endeavors - unless this IS the TLMAS. Then never mind.

David Raposa, Tuesday, 2 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

A bunch of my poems are here.

bnw, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Wow, a Franklin Bruno fan. Nice call, David.... I don't think I've seen a band more times live than Nothing Painted Blue. Maybe Refrigerator, fIREHOSE, Rocket from the Crypt, or Trumans Water.. but that's it.

Next, you'll be admitting you're a Rob Crow or Andy Partridge fan.

Brian MacDonald, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Glass Tiger?

Mike Hanle y, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Thankyou Tad. I've written poems since "Der Schlange" but none with its hem hem potency. I've not written a poem for over a decade though.

I don't write much - very little creative. The usual factors - self- doubt etc etc. I sometimes toy with starting a "How can I improve my writing?" thread but I'm too thin-skinned.

Tom, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I heart Tom's poem.

I've got some mp3's of songs I've done using Rebirth that I may upload to a publicly accessible place once I convince myself they aren't crap.

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Brian: You listing Refrigerator as one of your Bands Seen Most Live = me achieving a state of jealous rage the likes of which have never been seen before, EVER. Grr. But, yeah, as a matter of fact, I am warming to the musical stylings of Senor Crow - that Pinback's mighty nice. Does this mean we are approaching some sort of brotherly nexus? (And, yes, with news of the Extra Glenns record, and the Shrimper FJB compilation, and other such things I mention way too often for my own good, I am feasting at the trough of joy.)

Wasn't that URL Tom purchased (some spiny porcupine thing?) going to be used as a creative outlet of some sort for non-musical writerly stuff?

David Raposa, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Cider Armadillo. Yeah but I never bought any space for it. I'm still very interested in giving an outlet to some kind of broader writing from the people I read here, incidentally.

Tom, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

David: I'm sure you've seen certain bands live that would put me in equal rages of jealousy.

Sadly, Los Angeles hates Refrigerator -- probably because they don't take themselves nor "the scene" too seriously. Add to that: Dennis Callaci operates one of the best record stores in southern California (Rhino records in Claremont), so he gets extra jaded points -- which makes Refrigerator live shows more caustic to scenesters, and hence ever more entertaining...

Brian MacDonald, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Brian: I'm sorry, but we're talking about ME here. ME, ME, ME. And then ME s'more, because there's plenty of ME to go around.

I'll trade you Lightning Bolt & Arab-On-Radar for the 'Fridge & The Locust. Throw in Pink & Brown (a groop I've heard OF more than I heard), and I'll give up Aden AND True Love Always AND My Favorite. Oh, yeah. Or perhaps a Load Records / GSL exchange program can be discussed.

David Raposa, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If I MP3 my band though you lot will regret it...or perhaps not. Hmm...[DG is tempted]

DG, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i made the top 200 on MP3.com's pop charts once...

shhhh, i have a secret identity, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

two months pass...
I have a queue

Babelfish brings a lot more ahem POIGNANCY to Toms poem, I think.

Sarah, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hear my song and see my movie! And you can also see my idea of minimal web design. If you like. Be prepared.

maryann, Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This is the last creative non-Skykicking thing I wrote - I've really got to do more. But my goal is to write a short story over this summer (that's winter for all you Northern Hemisphere LayMuRRzzZZzz!!!)
