IKEA alternatives

What are the best online alternatives for 'modern furniture'? IKEA doesn't have exactly what I want (storage for books, DVDs and CDs so I can stop putting them in binders), and their online ordering is sketchy (give us your credit card number, then we figure out how much shipping is).

I like metal and glass and light-colored woods.

anthony easton (anthony), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 05:07 (twenty-one years ago)

hmmm. that's pretty expensive. maybe crate and barrel?
i've never ordered furniture online. sounds scary.

Bo Concept (not convinced by them), habitat (owned by ikea, but more expensive , but better design). I believe they are both available in the US.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 08:47 (twenty-one years ago)

i keep forgetting how expensive d w/i r is.
cabana is also good.

anthony easton (anthony), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 08:53 (twenty-one years ago)

It's quite pricey, but we found what we needed in Ikea in BONDE, for cds etc. They have metal cd storage inserts, so you can get c.60 cds in each section. They're not so good for books, as they're quite deep, and just not the right shape, but they're perfect for 12" vinyl.

Is Habitat really owned by IKEA?

Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 10:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Yep, has been for donkeys years

John Lewis is the other man in my life

Kingfish (Kingfish), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 13:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Garage sales and patience is best.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

bah! we're in mid-october, which puts the garage sales at a close, at least in the upper midwest.

fuck, do i need to move out of this state.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

what about charity/thrift shops. Hospice shops often turn up good stuff here in Britain. i have a wonderful 30s/40s dresser obtained this way.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 14:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, I was going to say second hand stores...

Nick and I went to IKEA on the way home from DC this weekend. We planned to only browse as we don't need to be carting anything else cross-country. Anyway, we were both a bit disappointed with the couch selection. We found one in dark green corduroy that we liked but it was over $900.

I've got this image in my head of a 3-seater sofa with simple lines in a soft charcoal gray fabric. I see it in design magazines all the time, but only in ads for expensive design firms. Show me the way!

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 14:17 (twenty-one years ago)

you appear to be describing my sofa

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 14:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't find a picture right now but it features a oak faced plywood coffee table that slots over the middle seat.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I am psychic! I see couches!

Um, Ed, please send me your address. Um, no reason.

Ok, So Where did you get it?

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

habitat, but we got it on sale so maybe it was because it was about to be withdrawn as a product.

it's more slate gray than charcoal, when I tidy up I will photograph it.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

F#&*! This thread is making me crave those Ikea meatballs. Damm you tasty treats!

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

There is only one gray couch on the habitat site, but I don't imagine it would be inexpensive to get one from the UK.

I think it's important than one's couch and cat match.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

not my sofa but good nonetheless

You don't want ones sofa and cat to match to the point of camouflage, that could be disastrous, particularly if you have a penchant for matching fluffy cushions.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

What if one has two cats that clash? (One solid-black, one orange and white)

Do I need to dye one of my kitties?

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

no, just dunk it into a paint bucket a coupla times. should be fine.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 18:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, miloauckerman, I'm glad you've brought that up. My other kitty (technically, Nick's kitty) is a very stripey tabby cat. She does not blend in well at all! I'm afraid we're going to have to throw her out in to the cold Chicago streets.

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

No!

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

two years pass...

I just bought these crazy ass Design Within Reach cubitec shelves kind of cheap off craigslist. They're modular and can be configured a bunch of different ways. They're a pretty bright orange though and I'm starting to feel a little buyers' remorse. Hopefully once I have them set up with books on them they won't seem as loud.

They look like this (this is not my picture and I probably will configure them differently)

Hurting 2, Monday, 25 August 2008 02:39 (seventeen years ago)

milo shouldn't have been putting his books in binders

omar little, Monday, 25 August 2008 03:09 (seventeen years ago)

Well, they're set up. They really look pretty cool with books on them, but now I feel like we need something else orange in the room.

Hurting 2, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 04:36 (seventeen years ago)

Orange is one of the best colors for house decorating IMO. Orange furniture/decor anyway.

Abbott, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 18:18 (seventeen years ago)

It is so CHEERY and LOVELY. Which is one of many reasons why yr new shelves look RAD, hutrnig.

Abbott, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 18:19 (seventeen years ago)

I bet you could make good guinea pig cages with those, ala this.

Maybe I need to quit thinking of interior decorating in guinea pig-centric terms.

Abbott, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 18:21 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, they wound up looking good -- we have them in a kind of staircase: 4/4/3/2. They're really easy to disassemble and reconfigure too.
